Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Never Missing

For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

Thomas Vale stood in front of me like a ghost that had stepped out of an old photograph.

The man everyone believed was gone.

The man whose disappearance had become another secret buried beneath my family’s lies.

He looked older than the picture.

Gray hair.

Lines around his eyes.

But his confidence was exactly the same.

The kind of confidence that came from believing he had always been smarter than everyone else.

Vanessa stood between us.

And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.

She was afraid of him.

Not annoyed.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Thomas noticed.

A small smile appeared on his face.

“Thomas: Vanessa.””

She didn’t answer.

“Thomas: You look like you’ve seen a ghost.””

Her jaw tightened.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

He laughed quietly.

“And yet, here I am.””

I looked between them.

“You know each other.””

Thomas looked at me.

Of course he did.

He looked at me like he already knew everything about me.

“Thomas: I know a lot about your family, Maya.””

The way he said my name made my skin crawl.

I stepped back.

“How?””

He smiled.

“Because your family has been part of my life for a very long time.””

My phone was still connected.

My mother was listening.

“Maya?””

Her voice came through.

Thomas’s eyes moved to my phone.

Then his expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“Thomas: Angela is on the phone, isn’t she?””

My hand tightened.

“How do you know that?””

He ignored the question.

“Thomas: Put her on speaker.””

“No.””

His smile faded slightly.

“You really are your mother’s daughter.””

I hated that he said it like an insult.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Thomas, this is over.””

He looked at her.

“Over?””

A quiet laugh escaped him.

“You actually believe that?””

Her face hardened.

“You disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“You let everyone think you were dead.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Because disappearing was easier than admitting the truth.””

The wind moved through the park.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew he was alive.””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My chest tightened.

“How long?””

Her eyes filled with shame.

“Since before you were born.””

I felt dizzy.

Before I was born.

This wasn’t just about my parents.

This was older than me.

Older than my memories.

Thomas walked closer.

“Your mother always wanted to believe people could change.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to talk about my mother.””

He smiled.

“Strong.””

I hated the way he said it.

Like he was evaluating me.

“Your mother was the only person who ever tried to stop me.””

“Stop you from what?””

His expression remained calm.

But Vanessa looked away.

That told me everything.

Thomas wasn’t the kind of person who got angry.

He was the kind of person who stayed calm because he believed he had already won.

“Thomas: From taking what wasn’t mine.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“She knows.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

His voice became sharper.

“You know exactly what happened.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“What happened?””

She closed her eyes.

For a moment, I saw the woman she might have been before all of this.

Someone scared.

Someone trapped.

Then she whispered:

“Thomas was my husband.””

“I know.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“You don’t know.””

A pause.

“He wasn’t just my husband.””

The words made my stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas’s smile disappeared.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

For the first time, she didn’t obey.

“He controlled everything.””

Silence.

Thomas stared at her.

“Careful.””

She continued anyway.

“He controlled my money.””

Her voice shook.

“My choices.””

“My life.””

I stared at her.

The woman who stole my mother’s seat.

The woman who lied to me for years.

The woman who hurt my family.

Was also afraid.

It didn’t erase what she did.

But it complicated everything.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I thought Daniel was my way out.””

My heart sank.

“That’s why you married him?””

She swallowed.

“At first.””

The honesty hurt.

“At first?””

She nodded.

“I convinced myself I loved him.””

Thomas laughed.

“Don’t pretend you were innocent.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You made me this way.””

His expression hardened.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“I showed you who you really were.””

I felt sick.

Because I suddenly understood.

This wasn’t just a fight between good and evil.

It was a chain of damaged people making terrible choices.

And somehow, I was standing in the middle of it.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Marcus.

*I found the original evidence. Do not trust Thomas.*

My heart jumped.

Thomas noticed.

“What did Marcus send you?””

I looked at him.

“How do you know it was Marcus?””

His face remained calm.

Too calm.

And that scared me.

Because he was always one step ahead.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Maya, you need to leave.””

Thomas turned toward her.

“Really?””

She stepped closer to me.

“For once in your life, do the right thing.””

Thomas smiled.

“Interesting.””

He reached into his coat.

Vanessa immediately froze.

“What are you doing?””

He pulled out a small envelope.

Not a weapon.

Not anything dangerous.

Just paper.

But the reaction was enough.

Vanessa looked terrified.

“What is that?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Something your mother never told you.””

I didn’t move.

“What?””

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

He held it up.

I saw three people.

My mother.

My father.

And Thomas.

But the date on the photo was impossible.

It was taken after Thomas supposedly disappeared.

I stared.

“That’s not possible.””

Thomas smiled.

“Your mother knew I was alive.””

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

“She met with me.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Ask her.””

I immediately called my mother.

She answered.

“Maya?””

I put the phone on speaker.

“Mom.””

A pause.

“Are you there?””

“Yes.””

My voice shook.

“Did you meet Thomas after he disappeared?””

Silence.

The kind of silence that destroys trust.

My mother’s breathing changed.

“Maya…”

“Answer me.””

Vanessa looked down.

Thomas watched.

Finally, my mother whispered:

“Yes.””

The world seemed to tilt.

I closed my eyes.

“Why?””

My mother’s voice broke.

“Because he threatened you.””

I opened my eyes.

“What?””

Thomas’s expression changed slightly.

My mother continued.

“He said if I didn’t meet him, he would hurt your father. He would destroy everything.””

I looked at Thomas.

He didn’t deny it.

My mother’s voice became stronger.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Again.

That phrase.

But this time, I understood.

She wasn’t hiding because she was selfish.

She was hiding because she was scared.

Thomas took a step closer.

“Thomas: She’s good at making herself look innocent.””

I glared at him.

“You threatened my mother?””

He smiled.

“You’re angry.””

“Yes.””

“Good.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He looked almost pleased.

“Anger makes people predictable.””

I realized something.

He wasn’t trying to convince me.

He was trying to manipulate me.

Just like everyone else.

But he didn’t know one thing.

I wasn’t the little girl who waited for adults to tell her what happened.

I was eighteen.

I was standing in my graduation gown.

And I was done being a character in someone else’s story.

I stepped forward.

“Where is the evidence?””

Thomas’s smile faded.

“What?””

“The evidence everyone is fighting over.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Thomas.

“Where is it?””

Neither answered.

That told me I was right.

Thomas finally spoke.

“You think evidence changes everything?””

“Yes.””

He shook his head.

“No, Maya.””

He looked at me carefully.

“The truth changes everything.””

A pause.

“And the truth is something you are not ready for.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Marcus.

I answered.

His voice was urgent.

“Maya, I found the original files.””

Everyone looked at me.

“What files?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“The ones that prove who actually started the entire mess.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then Marcus said:

“Maya, you need to hear this before Thomas does.””

I looked at Thomas.

Because he was already watching me.

“Who started it?””

Marcus whispered:

“Your father.””

The call went silent.

I stared at Daniel’s absence in this moment.

The man who had been my hero.

The man who had lied.

Again.

And then Thomas said something that made my blood run cold.

“Thomas: Now you understand.””

I looked at him.

“Understand what?””

His smile returned.

“Why your father will do anything to keep the truth buried.””

At that exact moment, my phone received a new message.

A photo.

A picture of Daniel.

Standing outside Marcus’s apartment.

May you like

And underneath it:

*Your father found him first.*
