Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Tried to Bury
The photograph on my phone felt like it weighed a hundred pounds.
My father.
Outside Marcus’s apartment.
The man who had spent the entire day looking ashamed.
The man who told me he was trying to protect me.
Standing outside the one place where the evidence existed.
My hands started shaking.
“No.””
The word came out before I even realized I had spoken.
Thomas watched my reaction carefully.
He already knew.
Vanessa already knew.
And suddenly, I realized something terrifying.
Everyone had been playing a game.
And I was the last person to learn the rules.
My mother’s voice came through the phone.
“Maya?””
I couldn’t answer.
She heard the silence.
“What happened?””
I looked at Thomas.
Then Vanessa.
Then the picture again.
“Dad found Marcus.””
The silence on the other end was immediate.
Not confusion.
Fear.
“Maya…”
My mother’s voice cracked.
“Where are you?””
“The park.””
“Leave.””
Her urgency made my chest tighten.
“Why?””
“Because if Daniel knows you found Marcus, he knows you’re close.””
I looked at Thomas.
“He’s already close.””
A pause.
Then my mother whispered:
“No.””
The fear in her voice made me understand.
She wasn’t afraid of Daniel being angry.
She was afraid of what he would do.
I ended the call.
Vanessa stared at me.
“You need to understand something.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Your father isn’t the person you think he is.””
I almost laughed.
“That’s funny coming from you.””
She accepted the hit.
“I know.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to her.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His expression tightened.
“Because she’s trying to save herself.””
“And you’re not?””
He smiled slightly.
“No.””
That answer surprised me.
“Then what are you trying to do?””
Thomas looked toward the street.
“Finish what should have been finished years ago.””
A chill ran through me.
“What does that mean?””
Before he answered, another car pulled into the parking lot.
My father’s car.
My heart stopped.
Daniel stepped out.
He looked exhausted.
Desperate.
Not angry.
That somehow scared me more.
He saw me.
Then he saw Thomas.
Then Vanessa.
His face changed.
“Maya.””
I stepped back.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to explain anymore.””
He looked hurt.
But I didn’t care.
Not because I hated him.
Because I was tired of loving people who kept choosing lies.
“You went to Marcus.””
His eyes moved.
That tiny movement was enough.
“You did.””
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Daniel…”
He ignored her.
“Maya, I didn’t hurt him.””
“Then why were you there?””
Silence.
I looked at Thomas.
“Why was my father at Marcus’s apartment?””
Thomas answered.
“Because Daniel has spent years making sure the evidence never reaches anyone.””
My father looked at him.
“Shut up.””
The anger in Daniel’s voice shocked me.
Not because he was angry.
Because it was the first time I saw him lose control.
“You don’t get to tell my daughter anything.””
Thomas smiled.
“There he is.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Is it true?””
His face changed.
“Maya.””
“Is it true?””
He closed his eyes.
That was enough.
I felt something break.
“How could you?””
His voice became quiet.
“Because I was scared.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone was scared.””
He looked at me.
“I made a mistake.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“A mistake is forgetting something.””
I pointed toward him.
“This was years of choices.””
Daniel looked away.
“I know.””
I wanted him to fight.
To deny it.
To tell me Thomas was lying.
But he didn’t.
That hurt more.
“What did you do?””
He swallowed.
“I borrowed money from the company.””
My stomach tightened.
“For what?””
He looked ashamed.
“To fix things.””
“What things?””
A long silence.
Then:
“The life I thought I was losing.””
I stared at him.
The answer was worse than I expected.
“You risked everything because you wanted a different life?””
“No.””
His eyes filled.
“I was trying to keep our family together.””
I shook my head.
“You destroyed it.””
Nobody spoke.
The truth was finally out.
And it didn’t feel satisfying.
It felt empty.
Because knowing why someone hurt you didn’t erase the hurt.
Thomas walked closer.
“Daniel was desperate.””
My father looked at him.
“Don’t pretend you care.””
Thomas smiled.
“I don’t.””
That honesty made everyone quiet.
“I only care that the truth finally comes out.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You don’t care about truth.””
Thomas turned toward her.
“You should know better than anyone.””
Her face went pale.
I noticed.
“What does that mean?””
Neither answered.
I stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
Then at Thomas.
Finally, she whispered:
“Thomas didn’t disappear because he was running away.””
I waited.
“He disappeared because we made him disappear.””
The air left my lungs.
“What?””
Daniel looked shocked.
“Vanessa.””
She continued.
“I was supposed to meet him.””
Thomas’s expression changed.
“Careful.””
She ignored him.
“I found out what he was doing.””
“What was he doing?””
She looked at me.
“He was using Daniel.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Thomas introduced your father to illegal financial deals.””
My eyes moved to Thomas.
“He set him up?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
Thomas laughed.
“You’re blaming me?””
She looked at him.
“You ruined everything.””
I felt lost.
“Then why did you help him?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because I was trapped.””
A silence.
“After Thomas disappeared, I thought I was free.””
She looked at me.
“Then I met your father.””
My chest tightened.
“And you used him.””
She didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“I thought if I became part of your family, I would finally have something safe.””
I looked at her.
“You destroyed my family to build one.””
A tear slipped down her face.
“Yes.””
For the first time, Vanessa wasn’t defending herself.
She was admitting it.
And somehow that made it worse.
Thomas stepped forward.
“Enough.””
His voice changed.
The calm disappeared.
Everyone noticed.
He was losing control.
“Where is the evidence?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“What?””
“The original files.””
Her face froze.
I looked between them.
“You don’t have it.””
Thomas’s eyes moved toward me.
“No.””
A pause.
“And neither does your mother.””
I felt a strange confidence.
“Then why are you so afraid?””
His expression hardened.
Because I was right.
He wasn’t afraid of what I knew.
He was afraid of what I could prove.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Marcus.
I opened it.
*I uploaded the files. Check your email.*
My heartbeat jumped.
I opened my email.
One new attachment.
*THE_COMPLETE_RECORD.pdf*
I clicked.
The first page loaded.
And the name at the top made me freeze.
*Daniel Brooks — Authorization Records*
My father’s signature.
But underneath it was something else.
A second signature.
A signature I recognized.
Because I had seen it on every birthday card.
Every school permission slip.
Every document from my childhood.
My mother’s signature.
I looked up.
“Mom.””
My voice shook.
Everyone turned.
Because I realized something.
My mother had been telling the truth.
But not the whole truth.
The document showed something impossible.
A transaction.
A transfer.
A decision made years ago.
Signed by both of my parents.
I looked at Daniel.
“What is this?””
His face went pale.
“Maya…”
“No.””
I held up the phone.
“You said Mom had nothing to do with this.””
He looked broken.
“I didn’t know.””
“Didn’t know what?””
He looked at the document.
Then at Thomas.
Then at Vanessa.
And finally at me.
“The truth.””
A silence followed.
Then my mother’s voice came through my phone.
“Maya?””
I answered.
“Mom.””
My voice cracked.
“Why is your signature on the document?””
Silence.
A long, painful silence.
Then she whispered:
“Because I signed it.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
Her voice trembled.
“Because I was trying to save your father.””
I closed my eyes.
After everything.
After all the lies.
After all the secrets.
There was still one more truth.
My mother had not been powerless.
She had made a choice.
A choice that changed everything.
And then she said the sentence that made me realize this story was never about who betrayed me.
It was about who sacrificed the most.
“Angela: Maya, I need you to know why I signed that paper.””
A pause.
“Because the person Thomas wanted to destroy wasn’t your father.””
My eyes opened.
“Who was it?””
May you like
My mother whispered:
“It was you.””
