Chapter 2: The Witness He Buried Too
The man who walked into the church looked older than I remembered.
His hair had turned gray at the temples.
His face carried years of exhaustion.
But Daniel knew him instantly.
Because Daniel had spent two years making sure nobody ever found him.
“Thomas.””
The name escaped Daniel’s mouth like a confession.
The entire church turned toward the man standing by the doors.
Thomas Reed.
Daniel’s former business partner.
The person who knew everything.
The person who had helped Daniel build the illusion of my death.
And the person Daniel thought he had silenced.
Victoria looked between them.
“Who is Thomas?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel’s silence told her enough.
Thomas walked slowly down the aisle.
“I was there that night.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Thomas stopped a few feet away.
“Yes.””
His voice was quiet.
“But unlike you, Daniel, I’ve spent the last two years trying to live with what happened.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Thomas looked at him sadly.
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
The priest slowly closed the Bible.
The wedding was over.
Everyone knew it.
Nobody cared about the flowers anymore.
Nobody cared about the cake waiting outside.
The only thing anyone wanted was the truth.
I watched Daniel carefully.
Two years ago, I had seen him as my husband.
My best friend.
The man I trusted more than anyone.
Now I saw him clearly.
A stranger wearing the face of someone I loved.
Thomas reached into his coat pocket and removed a small envelope.
“I kept this because I was afraid.””
Daniel laughed nervously.
“Afraid of what?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Of you.””
That answer shook the room.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You’re going to ruin everything based on a lie?””
Thomas didn’t move.
“No. I’m going to tell them what I should have told them two years ago.””
He handed the envelope to Marcus.
Inside was a small flash drive.
Marcus looked at me.
“This is the recording.””
Daniel froze.
“What recording?””
The question came too quickly.
Everyone noticed.
Marcus held up the drive.
“The recording from the night before Elena’s crash.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
Victoria saw it.
“You knew.””
Daniel turned.
“Knew what?””
She stared at him.
“You knew there was a recording.””
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I remembered that night.
The night I found the hidden files on Daniel’s computer.
The night I confronted him about missing money.
The night he stopped pretending.
Marcus connected the drive to a small speaker.
The church filled with static.
Then Daniel’s voice echoed through the room.
Cold.
Angry.
“You don’t get to leave me with nothing after everything I built.””
My stomach tightened.
Then my own voice played.
“You mean everything you stole.””
The recording continued.
Daniel’s voice became lower.
“You should have signed the papers when I asked.””
“I’m your wife.””
“No,” he said.
“You’re a problem.””
A wave of horror moved through the guests.
Daniel lunged forward.
“Turn it off!””
Marcus stepped back.
“You don’t want them to hear the rest?””
Daniel’s eyes burned with panic.
Because he knew what came next.
The recording played again.
My voice.
Shaking.
“Are you threatening me?””
A pause.
Then Daniel answered.
“Maybe you should be careful driving tomorrow.””
The speaker went silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The silence was heavier than any scream.
Victoria slowly looked at Daniel.
“You threatened her.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That doesn’t prove anything.””
I stared at him.
“You’re right.””
He looked surprised.
For the first time, I agreed with him.
“It doesn’t prove everything.””
I turned toward Marcus.
“Show them the rest.””
Marcus nodded.
He pulled out another document.
“This is the part Daniel didn’t expect.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?””
Marcus placed the paper on the table.
“The crash investigation was reopened after Elena regained consciousness.””
He looked directly at Daniel.
“And investigators found something inside the vehicle.””
Daniel’s breathing became uneven.
A single question moved through the church.
What had they found?
Marcus opened the document.
“Something that proved Elena was never supposed to survive.””
May you like
Then he looked at Daniel and said:
“And something that connects you directly to the person who tried to finish the job.””
