Chapter 6: The Secret I Was Never Supposed To Find

The paper shook in my hands.

Not because I was afraid of what the letter said.

Because I already knew.

Some part of me had always known there was something bigger.

Daniel was cruel.

He was greedy.

He was a liar.

But the truth I had uncovered before the crash had terrified him in a way money never could.

I looked down at the handwriting.

My handwriting.

The loops in the letters.

The way I crossed my T’s too hard.

The tiny mark near the bottom where my pen had slipped.

Proof that this was written by me.

Proof that before I lost everything, I had tried to leave behind a warning.

Marcus leaned closer.

“Are you okay?””

I couldn’t answer immediately.

Because I wasn’t reading a letter.

I was reading a message from the woman I used to be.

A woman who knew danger was coming.

A woman who tried to protect herself.

A woman who trusted nobody enough to tell them the truth.

I forced myself to continue.

The letter was short.

But every sentence felt heavier than the last.

*If you are reading this, something happened to me.*

*I need someone to know that Daniel is hiding something.*

My breathing became shallow.

Marcus watched my face.

“What does it say?””

I looked at him.

“Daniel was hiding something.””

He nodded.

“We already suspected that.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked back at the page.

“You don’t understand.””

I pointed at the next line.

*But it’s not just about the money.*

My stomach tightened.

Because that was the part I had never understood.

Everyone kept saying money.

Insurance.

Inheritance.

Accounts.

Assets.

But Daniel had always had money.

He didn’t need mine.

Not really.

There had always been another reason.

I kept reading.

*I found files on Daniel’s computer. Files he thought I would never see.*

*They involve people with powerful connections.*

*If Daniel knows I found them, he will do anything to stop me.*

I looked up.

“Powerful connections.””

Marcus became serious.

“What kind of files?””

“I don’t know.””

I turned the page.

And my heart stopped.

Because there was a name.

A name I recognized.

A name that shouldn’t have been there.

*Whitmore Foundation.*

My eyes widened.

Marcus noticed.

“What is it?””

I handed him the paper.

He read silently.

Then his expression changed.

“You knew about the foundation?””

I shook my head.

“Not like this.””

Daniel’s family foundation was famous.

They donated millions to charities.

They funded hospitals.

They appeared in newspapers.

People loved them.

I remembered attending charity events with Daniel.

Standing beside him while cameras flashed.

Listening to strangers tell me how lucky I was.

“He’s such a generous man.””

“He does so much good.””

“You must be proud.””

I always smiled.

Because I believed them.

But now I wondered.

How much of that generosity was real?

Marcus placed the letter down.

“We need to know what was in those files.””

Victor looked uncomfortable.

“I know.””

Everyone turned toward him.

“You know?””

He nodded.

“Daniel wasn’t just moving money.””

Marcus stared.

“Explain.””

Victor hesitated.

“He was moving information.””

“What kind of information?””

Victor looked at me.

“People.””

The word made the room colder.

“What does that mean?””

Victor lowered his voice.

“Daniel collected personal information on people connected to the foundation.””

Marcus frowned.

“For what purpose?””

Victor shook his head.

“I never knew.””

I stared at him.

“You worked for him.””

“Yes.””

“Then why don’t you know?””

Victor looked ashamed.

“Because Daniel never trusted anyone completely.””

A bitter smile crossed his face.

“He trusted people enough to use them.””

That sounded exactly like Daniel.

Marcus picked up the letter again.

“Was there anyone else involved?””

Victor didn’t answer.

And that silence bothered me.

“Victor.””

He looked at me.

“There was someone else.””

“Who?””

He looked toward the door.

Like he was afraid someone might be listening.

“Someone Daniel answered to.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

Victor shook his head.

“I don’t know his name.””

Marcus frowned.

“You’re saying Daniel Whitmore, a man with money and power, was working for someone else?””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

The room fell silent.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone froze.

I looked down.

The number was unknown.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Marcus said:

“Don’t answer.””

But I already knew.

I had spent two years waiting for the truth.

I couldn’t turn away now.

I pressed the button.

“Hello?””

At first, there was only silence.

Then a voice.

A woman’s voice.

Soft.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Hello, Elena.””

My blood went cold.

Because I knew that voice.

I hadn’t heard it in years.

But I remembered.

“Who is this?””

A small laugh came through the phone.

“You really don’t remember me?””

I looked at Marcus.

He saw my expression.

“Elena?””

The woman continued.

“I thought Daniel would succeed.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What do you want?””

“I want to know if you found the files.””

My heart stopped.

Nobody outside this room should know about the files.

Nobody.

“How do you know about that?””

The woman ignored my question.

“You were always too curious.””

The same words Daniel used to say.

My stomach turned.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who warned Daniel about you.””

I froze.

Marcus immediately stood.

“Put it on speaker.””

I did.

The woman’s voice filled the room.

“You should have stayed dead, Elena.””

Victor’s face changed.

He recognized the voice.

“Wait.””

He stepped closer.

“Who is that?””

The woman laughed.

“You know exactly who I am, Victor.””

His face went pale.

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You know her?””

Victor whispered:

“She was Daniel’s assistant.””

My heart dropped.

Daniel’s assistant.

The person closest to him.

The person who knew his schedule.

His meetings.

His secrets.

“What’s her name?””

Victor stared at the phone.

“Claire.””

The woman spoke again.

“So Victor finally told you.””

I felt a chill.

“You’re Claire?””

“Yes.””

“Why are you calling me?””

Silence.

Then her voice changed.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Almost amused.

“Because you’re looking in the wrong direction.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“You think Daniel was the mastermind.””

A pause.

“He wasn’t.””

Nobody spoke.

Claire continued.

“Daniel was only a man desperate to keep what he had.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Then who was controlling him?””

The line went quiet.

Too quiet.

Then Claire answered.

“The person who built everything Daniel now owns.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Who?””

Claire’s voice became a whisper.

“The person whose name is on the foundation.””

I felt frozen.

Because I knew that name.

Everyone did.

The Whitmore family name.

Daniel’s father.

But Daniel’s father had been dead for five years.

Marcus looked at me.

“What did she mean?””

Before I could answer, Claire spoke one final sentence.

“The man you think is dead…”

A pause.

“…is the reason Daniel tried to erase you.””

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Victor looked terrified.

Marcus looked confused.

And I stared at the phone in my hand.

Because for two years, I believed my enemy was the man who betrayed me.

Daniel.

But now I had to face something much worse.

What if Daniel wasn’t the person who created the plan?

What if he was only following orders?

I looked at the letter again.

The words stared back at me.

*Daniel isn’t the only person who wanted me dead.*

For the first time since I returned from the dead, I understood something.

May you like

I hadn’t escaped one monster.

I had escaped a family of them.
