Chapter 2: The Evidence Hidden Beneath the Wreckage

The church was so quiet I could hear the faint buzzing of the old lights above us.

Nobody moved.

Nobody whispered.

Everyone was waiting for Marcus to reveal what had been hidden for two years.

Daniel stood beneath the wedding arch like a man trapped inside a nightmare he couldn’t wake from.

His expensive suit was still perfectly pressed.

His hair was still carefully styled.

The wedding ring meant for Victoria was still sitting in his hand.

But the image he had built was collapsing piece by piece.

Marcus opened the document slowly.

“The original crash report stated that Elena lost control of her vehicle because of a mechanical failure.””

He looked at Daniel.

“But that report was incomplete.””

Daniel forced a laugh.

“You’re seriously doing this here? At my wedding?””

Marcus didn’t even blink.

“You chose the location.””

A few guests looked away.

Others stared directly at Daniel.

The man they had celebrated minutes ago was now standing in the center of a crime scene.

Marcus continued.

“When Elena’s car was recovered, investigators focused only on the damage caused by the fire and the impact.””

He turned the page.

“But when the case was reopened, forensic specialists found evidence that someone had tampered with the vehicle before the crash.””

A woman in the front row gasped.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

I watched him.

The speed of his response.

The fear hiding behind his anger.

The way his fingers tightened around the wedding ring.

He wasn’t shocked by the accusation.

He was terrified that it had finally been discovered.

Marcus noticed too.

“The brake lines were damaged.””

The room erupted.

“What?””

“No way.””

“Did he do that?””

The whispers spread like a storm.

Daniel raised his voice.

“Stop.””

Everyone turned toward him.

“You’re listening to a stranger accuse me of murdering my wife.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

My voice cut through the room.

“They’re listening to the evidence.””

Daniel stared at me.

For a second, I saw the old Daniel.

The man who used to know exactly how to make me doubt myself.

The man who could turn every argument into my fault.

He softened his expression.

“Elena, please.””

The word almost sounded gentle.

Almost.

“I know you’ve been through something horrible.””

He stepped toward me.

“But you’re hurting people because you’re angry.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not because his words hurt.

Because I finally recognized them.

The same manipulation.

The same carefully chosen sentences.

Two years ago, I would have apologized.

Two years ago, I would have wondered if maybe I was being unfair.

But I wasn’t that woman anymore.

“You’re still doing it,” I said.

Daniel stopped.

“Doing what?””

“Pretending you’re the victim.””

The church became silent again.

I walked closer.

“You told everyone I died.””

My voice trembled, but I didn’t stop.

“You watched my family bury an empty coffin.””

Daniel looked away.

“You took the money from my inheritance.””

His jaw tightened.

“You told everyone you loved me.””

I stared into his eyes.

“But you were already planning your next life.””

Victoria looked at him.

Her face was pale.

“How long?””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

“How long were you planning this?””

He opened his mouth.

No answer came.

That was answer enough.

Marcus stepped forward again.

“There is more.””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Of course there is.””

Marcus ignored him.

“The police found a second piece of evidence inside Elena’s vehicle.””

He reached into the folder.

A small plastic bag.

Inside was a broken phone.

My phone.

I hadn’t seen it since that night.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

I remembered holding it while driving.

I remembered calling Daniel.

I remembered hearing his voice.

Marcus held it up.

“This phone was recovered from the wreckage.””

Daniel’s eyes moved toward it.

“The data was damaged,” Marcus continued.

“But not destroyed.””

He looked at me.

“Some files were recovered.””

My stomach tightened.

“What files?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

He looked at Daniel.

“Messages.””

The color disappeared from Daniel’s face.

Victoria noticed.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t respond.

Marcus connected the phone to a small device.

The church waited.

Then the screen displayed a series of messages.

Messages between Daniel and an unknown number.

The first one appeared.

*Unknown: Is she still refusing?*

A second message.

*Daniel: She’s becoming suspicious.*

Another.

*Unknown: Then handle it before she talks.*

The entire church went still.

Victoria covered her mouth.

I stared at the screen.

I had spent months wondering if Daniel acted alone.

Now I had my answer.

He didn’t.

Marcus scrolled further.

*Daniel: After tomorrow, everything changes.*

*Unknown: Make sure there’s no chance she comes back.*

A shiver moved through me.

Because that sentence was the one that haunted my dreams.

No chance she comes back.

Daniel had never planned for me to survive.

He had planned for me to disappear forever.

One of the guests stood up.

“Daniel, who was that?””

Daniel looked around.

Nobody was on his side anymore.

“I can explain.””

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“You keep saying that.””

Her voice cracked.

“But you never explain anything.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Victoria, please.””

“No.””

She removed her hand from his.

“You don’t get to say please now.””

The wedding ring slipped from his fingers and fell onto the floor.

A tiny metallic sound.

But everyone heard it.

Daniel stared at it.

Like he was watching his entire future fall apart.

Marcus gathered the documents.

“The person who sent these messages has not yet been identified publicly.””

Daniel looked up.

Hope flashed across his face.

Just for a moment.

Then Marcus finished.

“But we know who owns the phone number.””

Daniel froze.

I looked at Marcus.

“Who?””

Marcus turned toward the church entrance.

The doors opened again.

A woman stood there.

Everyone recognized her.

Especially Daniel.

His face changed instantly.

Not fear this time.

Panic.

The woman walked inside slowly.

She was wearing a gray coat and holding a handbag.

Her eyes were fixed on Daniel.

I had never seen her before.

But Daniel had.

Because the moment she entered, he whispered the name he never wanted anyone to hear.

“Rachel.””

Victoria looked between them.

“Who is Rachel?””

Nobody answered.

The woman stopped near the front row.

Then she looked at me.

“I’m sorry it took so long.””

Her voice was shaking.

“But I was afraid he would find me too.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“No.””

Rachel opened her handbag.

And pulled out a document.

A document with Daniel’s signature.

“I have proof,” she said.

“Proof that Daniel didn’t just plan Elena’s death.””

She looked directly at him.

“He planned mine too.””

The church doors slowly closed behind her.

And Daniel realized something he had never considered.

The people he erased were coming back one by one.
