Chapter 12: The Son Who Chose Revenge

Elias didn't lower the gun.

He stood beneath the hanging lamp, his face half-hidden in shadow, watching Vanessa as if he were waiting for her to make one wrong move.

“Answer me,” he said.

Vanessa raised both hands.

“I don't know where Richard's son is.””

Elias laughed without humor.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I swear.””

“Your father swore the same thing before he locked me in a room for nine years.””

I stepped between them.

“Put the gun down.””

Elias looked at me.

“You still think you're in charge.””

“I'm trying to stop another murder.””

“No,” he said.

“You're trying to preserve the family that destroyed mine.””

He pointed the pistol toward the papers on the desk.

“Read the letter.””

“I have.””

“Then you know what Richard did to our mother.””

“Yes.””

“Do you know what he did to me?””

I held his gaze.

“No.””

Elias lowered the weapon just enough to gesture toward the shelves.

“Look at the boxes.””

I turned.

Each box bore a name and a date. Some were labeled with company departments. Others carried the names of people I had never heard of.

At the end of the shelf stood a small wooden box marked *MARGARET HALE — PERSONAL EFFECTS*.

I opened it.

Inside lay a silver locket, a child's drawing, and a folded hospital bracelet.

The bracelet carried my mother's name.

Margaret Hale.

Beneath it was a second bracelet.

Elias Richard Hale.

My hands began to shake.

I opened the locket.

A photograph of my mother lay inside, her dark hair falling over one shoulder. She was smiling at the camera, one hand resting on her stomach.

On the reverse, she had written a sentence.

For my three boys. No matter what happens, remember that you belong to one another.

I closed my eyes.

For years, I had believed my mother had died before she could know us.

But she had known.

She had carried all three of us.

She had loved us.

And someone had taken that away.

I turned toward Elias.

“What happened to her?””

His face tightened.

“She was kept in a private facility outside the city. Richard paid the doctors to tell everyone she had died. My father found her years later, but she was too ill to leave.””

“Did she know about us?””

“Yes.””

“Did she know we were alive?””

Elias looked down.

“She asked for you every day.””

The words nearly brought me to my knees.

“What did she say?””

He swallowed.

“She said Marcus would try to fix everything. She said Daniel would forgive people who didn't deserve it. And she said I would become the one person she feared.””

He looked up.

“She was right.””

Vanessa began crying softly.

Elias turned toward her.

“Don't.””

She pressed a hand over her mouth.

“You were a child,” she whispered.

“You didn't deserve what happened to you.””

“Neither did Thomas.””

“Neither did Daniel.””

“Neither did any of them.””

His voice rose.

“Yet you helped Richard keep them here.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

Elias stepped closer.

“You knew what was happening. You knew my mother was alive. You knew Thomas was imprisoned.

You knew Daniel was being held beneath Marcus's house. And you did nothing.””

“I was afraid.””

“So was I.””

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Elias looked toward me.

“Do you know why I came back?””

“To find the records.””

“To find the truth.””

He placed the pistol on the desk.

“I wanted to expose Richard. I wanted him to lose everything. I wanted the world to see what he'd done.””

“Then why did you threaten Maya?””

Elias looked away.

“I didn't.””

I showed him the photograph from my phone.

The image of Maya tied to a chair.

The message demanding the ring.

His face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“Someone sent it to me.””

“Richard.””

“Who else?””

Elias shook his head.

“That isn't Richard's handwriting.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

He took the phone and enlarged the image.

“The message was sent from a device registered to the company security system. Richard's devices were disabled after the shooting.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“Who else has access?””

Vanessa's face went pale.

“Daniel.””

“Which Daniel?””

She didn't answer.

Elias snatched up the pistol again.

“There's only one person who could have arranged the kidnapping without Richard knowing.””

I thought of the man who had emerged from the floor. The man who had used our childhood memories to convince me he was my brother. The man who had called himself the brother who survived.

“Elias,” I said, “who was the boy in the photograph?””

He looked at me.

“Richard's son.””

“But Richard is our father's twin. How can he have a son who looks exactly like us?””

Elias pulled a second document from the box.

“Because he isn't Richard's biological son.””

I read the name.

*DANIEL RICHARD HALE.*

Beneath it was a note in my father's handwriting.

The child was born to Margaret's sister. Richard adopted him after the original records were destroyed.

I looked up.

“Daniel was adopted?””

“Not the Daniel you remember,” Elias said.

“The other one.””

He tapped the document.

“Richard took the infant after his own son died. He raised him using the name Daniel. He trained him to imitate our brother, memorize his memories, and replace him when the time came.””

My stomach twisted.

“So the man who came out of the floor—”

“Is Richard's adopted son. A counterfeit Daniel.””

I remembered the scar, the childhood stories, the exact answer about Scout.

“How could he know everything?””

Elias looked at me.

“Because Richard had access to your family records. He recorded your conversations, collected your photographs, and paid people to follow you. The false Daniel was prepared for years.””

Vanessa stared at the document.

“Why?””

“To steal the company,” Elias said.

“To gain Marcus's trust. To obtain the signet ring and the archive.””

He looked toward the tunnel.

“And to make sure the real Daniel could never come home.””

A distant explosion shook dust from the ceiling.

The lights flickered.

Elias turned toward the corridor.

“Richard is moving.””

I grabbed the papers.

“We need to find Maya.””

“And Thomas,” Vanessa added.

“And the real Daniel,” Elias said.

I looked at him sharply.

“Where is he?””

Elias's expression darkened.

“Somewhere Richard has kept him alive for the same reason he kept me alive.””

“To protect a secret?””

“To protect the truth.””

He moved toward the doorway.

I followed, clutching the documents against my chest.

The tunnel seemed longer on the way back. Water dripped from the ceiling, and the emergency lights flashed red against the stone walls.

When we reached the security room, the monitors were working again.

The screen showed Maya and Thomas inside a glass-walled chamber.

Richard stood outside the door, his wounded shoulder wrapped in a white bandage.

Beside him stood the counterfeit Daniel.

He was holding a small metal box.

Richard opened it.

Inside lay a silver locket identical to the one I had found in my mother's effects.

He held it up to the camera.

“Marcus,” he said, “you've been asking the wrong questions.””

He pressed the locket's clasp.

A tiny compartment opened.

Inside was a photograph of my mother holding three infants.

Richard smiled.

“Your mother didn't leave you a company.””

He leaned toward the camera.

“She left you a choice.””

The screen split into three images.

Maya.

Thomas.

And a third room containing a man chained to a chair.

His hair was long, his face gaunt, and his eyes fixed on the camera.

I knew that face.

It was Daniel.

The real Daniel.

Richard spoke slowly.

“Bring me the original ledger by midnight, or your brother dies.””

I looked at the clock.

11:58 p.m.

Two minutes remained.

Then the counterfeit Daniel stepped closer to the camera.

He smiled with my brother's face.

“And Marcus?””

I leaned toward the screen.

“What?””

He raised the silver locket.

“Ask Elias what happened to the woman who carried all three of you.””

Elias went rigid beside me.

The counterfeit Daniel continued.

“Because your father didn't save your mother.””

He opened the locket.

Inside was a tiny key.

“He sold her.””

Elias lunged toward the monitor, screaming.

I grabbed his arm.

“Elias!””

He turned on me, his eyes wild.

“You don't understand!””

“Then explain it!””

He looked at the screen.

Then at the locket in Richard's hand.

Finally, he whispered the words that made the entire story collapse into something far darker.

“My mother wasn't the only woman Richard took.””

May you like

He looked at me.

“Your father helped him choose the others.””
