Chapter 9: The Names Beneath the Names

The first door opened before I could reach it.

A man stumbled into the corridor, shielding his eyes from the red emergency lights. He wore a gray hospital gown and clutched a plastic cup against his chest.

Behind him, an elderly woman began shouting a name.

“Peter! Peter, don't leave me!””

Another door swung open.

Then another.

People emerged from the rooms in confusion, some crying, some stumbling, some too frightened to move beyond their thresholds.

There were more than twenty of them.

I counted eleven before the corridor became too crowded.

Richard had built a prison beneath his home, but he had also built something else.

A place where people disappeared.

Daniel stared at the faces around us.

“Marcus,” he whispered, “these are the people who knew.””

A woman seized his sleeve.

“Daniel Hale?””

He turned.

She looked to be in her forties, with a thin scar running from her temple to her jaw.

“I knew your father,” she said.

“He told me you would come.””

Daniel's eyes widened.

“Who are you?””

“Rebecca Shaw. I handled the company's accounts before Richard replaced me.””

I stepped closer.

“What did Richard steal?””

Rebecca laughed bitterly.

“Everything he could. Pension funds. Development deposits.

Money from investors who trusted your father. When your father discovered the transfers, he tried to stop him.””

“And Thomas?””

“Thomas found the original ledger.””

She glanced toward the wooden door.

“Your father hid it in the archive. Richard couldn't find it, so he started collecting everyone who knew it existed.””

Vanessa looked sick.

“Why did you keep working for him?””

Rebecca turned on her.

“Because he threatened my children.””

The words struck Vanessa harder than any accusation I could have made.

Rebecca pointed toward the ceiling.

“Your father took my daughter when she was twelve. He told me she was safe, that I could see her whenever I wanted, provided I kept my mouth shut.””

“Where is she now?”” I asked.

Rebecca's face crumpled.

“I don't know.””

Daniel grabbed the wall to steady himself.

I looked at the red-lit corridor, at the doors standing open, and at the people emerging from a nightmare that had lasted years.

We couldn't leave them here.

Not with Richard controlling the estate.

I pulled out my phone.

No signal.

Of course.

The basement was built to keep secrets, and it was built to prevent those secrets from reaching the outside world.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Is there another exit?””

She nodded toward the far end of the corridor.

“The archive connects to an old storm tunnel. It comes out near the river.””

“Can everyone get through it?””

“Not if the gates are closed.””

“Then we open them.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“You can't. The tunnel controls are in the security room.””

I looked at the screen.

Richard was still watching us.

Maya sat beside him, her hands tied to the chair. Thomas stood behind her, staring directly into the camera.

He raised one hand and tapped his right eyebrow.

Once.

Twice.

Then he pointed downward.

I remembered the scar above his eyebrow.

The phrase written beneath the photograph.

The first son remembers.

Thomas wasn't simply trying to communicate with us.

He was giving us a signal.

I looked at Daniel.

“Can you get to the security room?””

He nodded.

“Show me where.””

Vanessa caught my arm.

“Marcus, you can't go after him alone.””

“I'm not.””

I pointed toward the people in the corridor.

“Rebecca, can you organize everyone? Get the children together. Keep the injured near the wall.””

Rebecca straightened.

“I can.””

“Mrs. Bell, do you know the way to the storm tunnel?””

She nodded.

“Your father showed me once.””

“Then help Rebecca get everyone there.””

I turned to Vanessa.

“You're coming with me.””

She looked toward the screen.

“Richard will kill Maya.””

“Then we'd better move.””

We ran down the corridor.

Behind us, the freed prisoners began moving toward the far exit. Their footsteps echoed through the basement like a distant storm.

The security room was hidden behind a steel door near the end of the hall. Vanessa entered a code, but the keypad flashed red.

She tried another.

Nothing.

“What's the code?”” I asked.

“I don't know. My father changed it.””

Daniel pressed his face to the narrow window.

“Move.””

He studied the keypad for several seconds.

Then he entered six digits.

The door unlocked.

I stared at him.

“How did you know?””

“Because he always uses the same code.””

“What is it?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Thomas's birthday.””

The door swung inward.

Inside, dozens of monitors showed different parts of the estate. Hallways. Bedrooms.

The greenhouse. The hidden rooms beneath our house.

And the children.

I found Maya immediately.

She was sitting in a chair inside a room lined with bookshelves. Thomas stood beside her, his hands cuffed behind his back.

Richard paced in front of them, holding the silver bell.

A second monitor showed another room.

Lily sat on a narrow bed, her face buried in her knees.

I lunged toward the console.

“Can you open the doors?””

Vanessa moved to the control panel.

“Some of them.””

“Open Maya's room.””

She typed rapidly.

A red warning appeared.

*REMOTE ACCESS DISABLED.*

“Richard has locked the system.””

Daniel leaned over her shoulder.

“There's a manual override.””

“Where?””

“Behind the panel.””

He ripped the metal cover away, exposing a bundle of wires and a small mechanical switch.

Vanessa stared at him.

“How do you know this system?””

Daniel didn't look at her.

“Because I helped install it.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

His face tightened.

“Richard told me he was building a secure facility for witnesses who needed protection. I believed him. By the time I understood what it really was, he'd already locked me inside.””

He pulled the switch.

The monitors flickered.

A warning siren began.

On the largest screen, Richard turned toward a camera.

His smile disappeared.

“Daniel,” he said through the speakers.

“I should have known you'd remember.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You should have left our family alone.””

Richard raised the bell.

“You still don't understand. Your family was never the point.””

He walked toward Maya.

She recoiled, twisting against the chair.

“Don't touch me!””

Richard stopped inches from her.

“Your grandfather left something behind, sweetheart. Something your father doesn't even know he has.””

I felt the ring in my pocket.

The archive.

The ledger.

The names.

“What does he want from her?”” I whispered.

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

Then he spoke, his voice suddenly clear.

“Grandpa wants Maya to remember.””

Richard slapped him across the face.

Thomas fell against the wall.

Maya screamed.

I slammed my fist against the console.

“Open the door!””

Vanessa yanked another lever.

Somewhere beyond the security room, a heavy lock released.

On the screen, the door behind Richard clicked open.

He turned sharply.

Thomas lifted his head.

And for the first time, I saw him smile.

He had been waiting for that sound.

Richard rushed toward the door, but Thomas threw himself against his legs. Maya kicked the chair backward, sending it crashing into Richard's knees.

The silver bell flew from his hand.

It struck the floor and rolled beneath a cabinet.

Vanessa found the release control.

Maya's door opened.

“Go!”” I shouted at the screen, though she couldn't hear me.

Thomas grabbed Maya's hand and pulled her into the corridor.

Richard recovered quickly.

He seized Thomas by the collar and dragged him backward.

Then he reached into his jacket and pulled out a small black pistol.

My blood turned to ice.

“Stop!”” I screamed.

Richard aimed at Thomas.

But before he could fire, a second figure entered the room.

An older man wearing a dark suit.

He moved slowly, leaning on a wooden cane.

His face was pale, his hair almost completely white.

I knew him.

Not from photographs.

Not from memories.

From the funeral.

From the closed casket.

From the death certificate bearing his name.

The man stepped between Richard and Thomas.

Then he looked directly into the camera.

“Richard,” he said quietly, “you've kept my sons waiting long enough.””

My knees nearly gave way.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I couldn't breathe.

The man lifted his face toward the camera, revealing the familiar scar on his chin and the unmistakable eyes I had inherited.

My father.

Richard Hale.

Alive.

And the first thing he said was, “Marcus, whatever happens next, do not trust the man standing beside me.””

Richard turned slowly.

Because the man beside my father wasn't Thomas.

May you like

It was Daniel.

And Daniel, standing right next to me in the security room, suddenly whispered, “Oh, God. Which one of us came out of the floor?””
