The Hand Beneath the Floor / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4: The Photograph on the Wall

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Maya's photograph stared back at me from the hidden room beneath my house. She was standing outside her elementary school, her pink backpack slipping off one shoulder, smiling at someone beyond the camera.

The picture had been taken that morning.

I knew because I had dropped her off myself.

Someone had been watching my daughter.

Someone had been watching us for years.

I turned toward Vanessa, and the hammer in my hand suddenly felt too heavy.

“Who took this picture?””

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

“Answer me!””

“You're frightening Lily.””

“I'm not asking Lily. I'm asking you.””

Behind me, Daniel struggled to his feet. He gripped the edge of the sofa, his legs shaking beneath him.

“Marcus, get Maya out of this house.””

I kept my eyes on Vanessa.

“Who took the photograph?””

She looked at the second opening, then at the staircase.

“You need to understand that everything I've done was to keep this family together.””

I stepped closer.

“You locked my brother beneath our home. You hid his daughter. You lied about a second child. And now there's a photograph of Maya in a secret room.””

“I didn't take that picture.””

“Then who did?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“My father.””

The answer landed like a blow.

I had met Richard Voss only twice. Vanessa had told me he was a private businessman who lived overseas and rarely visited the United States. He hadn't attended our wedding.

He hadn't come to Maya's birth. When I asked questions, Vanessa always gave the same explanation.

Her father was difficult.

Her father was controlling.

Her father had made mistakes she didn't want to discuss.

I had accepted those explanations because I thought respecting my wife's boundaries was part of loving her.

Now I wondered whether those boundaries had been walls around something monstrous.

“Your father is here?”” I asked.

“No.””

“Where is he?””

“I don't know.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You always say that.””

Vanessa turned on him.

“Be quiet.””

“You told me he was dead the first year you kept me here. Then you said he'd moved to Europe. Last month, you told me he'd be coming for Lily.””

I stared at her.

“Last month?””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“Daniel doesn't understand what he's saying.””

“I'm beginning to think he's the only person in this house who does.””

A muffled voice rose from the hidden passage.

“Is it safe now?””

It was a boy's voice.

Young. Frightened. Close enough that I could hear the tremor in his breathing.

I knelt beside the opening.

“What's your name?””

Silence.

“I'm not going to hurt you,” I said.

“My name is Marcus. I'm coming to get you.””

“Don't!””

The boy's answer was so sharp that I stopped.

“Don't come down. She'll lock you in, too.””

I glanced at Daniel.

He nodded grimly.

“That's how it happens. She tells you she's helping. Then the door closes.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Marcus, please. Give me the remote.””

I held out my free hand.

“Put it on the floor.””

“It's the only thing keeping the lower doors secure.””

“Exactly.””

Her eyes filled with tears, but she didn't move.

“Do you know what your brother did to me?”” she whispered.

I stared at her.

“I'm listening.””

“He threatened my father. He stole confidential records. He came to our house and tried to take Lily.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I came to take my daughter home.””

“You were unstable!””

“I was a father!””

His voice cracked through the living room.

Lily began crying beneath the floor.

“Daddy?””

Daniel dropped to his knees.

“I'm here, sweetheart. I'm right here.””

I crouched beside him.

“Daniel, tell me the truth. All of it.””

He looked at me, then at Vanessa.

“Seven years ago, Dad's company was about to be sold. Our father had left instructions that neither of us could sell our shares without the other's consent. Vanessa discovered that if I disappeared, she could use a forged power of attorney to take control of my interest.””

“Why would she need your shares?””

“Because Richard Voss wanted the company.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

Daniel continued.

“Your wife didn't marry you because she loved you, Marcus. She married you because you were the surviving heir she could control.””

The room seemed to shrink around me.

I remembered Vanessa's sudden interest in my father's business during our courtship. I remembered her encouraging me to accept the position of managing director. I remembered how she had insisted that our financial records be consolidated after our wedding.

At the time, every suggestion had sounded reasonable.

Now each memory acquired a second meaning.

“That's a lie,” Vanessa said.

“Then why is my signature on a transfer document dated six months after my death?””

She said nothing.

I looked at her wedding ring.

“You knew who I was before we met.””

Vanessa's silence answered me.

My phone vibrated in my pocket.

A message from Maya's grandmother appeared on the screen.

*I'm outside. Why is the front door locked?*

Relief surged through me.

I called Helen immediately.

“Mom, listen carefully. Take Maya and get away from the house. Call the police. Tell them there are people being held inside.””

“What? Marcus, what's happening?””

“Just do it!””

A loud bang sounded from the front door.

Helen was no longer outside alone.

Someone had arrived behind her.

Vanessa looked toward the entrance, and for the first time, she smiled.

Not broadly. Not triumphantly.

Just enough to tell me she had been waiting for this moment.

“You should have left the floor alone,” she said.

The doorbell rang.

Then a man's voice came through the wood.

“Vanessa? Open the door.””

Daniel went rigid.

He grabbed my sleeve so tightly that his fingernails dug into my skin.

“Marcus,” he whispered, “that's him.””

“Who?””

“My father-in-law.””

Vanessa's father.

Richard Voss.

The man whose photographs covered the hidden room.

The man who had supposedly been overseas for years.

He knocked again.

“Vanessa, I know you're in there. And I know you've opened the floor.””

A pause followed.

Then he spoke directly to the door camera.

“Bring me the girl, and I'll let the rest of you live.””

From upstairs, Maya screamed.

I ran toward the staircase.

But before I reached the first step, the front door burst inward.

And the man standing on the porch wasn't alone.

He had two armed men beside him.

One was carrying a black duffel bag.

The other was holding my daughter's school backpack.
