Chapter 10: The Voice From The Past

“Mrs. Carter… there is something your daughter-in-law never told you about the house.””

The voice on the phone was calm.

Too calm.

I stood there beneath the warm patio lights, holding the phone against my ear while every person around me watched my face for answers.

Daniel.

The name that had appeared in messages.

The name Vanessa had tried to explain away.

The name my late husband had written about years ago.

And now that name belonged to a real voice.

A real person.

“Who are you?”” I asked again.

The man on the other end sighed.

“I’m the person Vanessa hired to help her understand your family’s property.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Put him on speaker.””

I looked at my son.

Then I pressed the button.

Daniel’s voice filled the backyard.

“I know this is not how I expected this conversation to happen.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“Daniel, don’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

Marcus noticed.

“You know him.””

She swallowed.

“I know who he is.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

Her silence answered him.

Daniel continued.

“Mr. Carter, I apologize for the situation you’re in right now.””

Marcus frowned.

“You’re apologizing?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

A pause.

“Because I should have contacted you sooner.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, stop talking.””

The desperation in her voice was obvious.

Marcus turned toward her.

“You told me he was just a consultant.””

“He is.””

“Then why are you afraid of what he says?””

She didn’t answer.

Daniel spoke again.

“Mr. Carter, your wife contacted me months ago because she wanted information about the property.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“And?””

“She asked me to review the ownership documents.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why would she do that?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then answered.

“Because she believed your mother was hiding something.””

Vanessa quickly interrupted.

“Because she was!””

Everyone turned.

Her face changed when she realized she had admitted it.

Marcus stared.

“You knew there was something.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

Finally.

A real answer.

“Yes,” she repeated.

“You all think I’m some monster, but nobody understands what I found.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What did you find?””

She looked toward me.

“The truth.””

I felt a chill.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Vanessa, that’s not the truth.””

Her eyes widened.

“You don’t get to say that.””

“I reviewed the documents.””

“You reviewed what I gave you.””

“And I told you what they meant.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Can someone explain?””

Daniel answered.

“The house belonged to your father.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“But after his passing, ownership was transferred according to his instructions.””

I looked down.

My husband.

Even after death, he was still trying to protect us.

“Transferred to who?”” Marcus asked.

Daniel paused.

Vanessa looked nervous.

Then Daniel said:

“Your mother.””

The backyard went silent.

Marcus looked at me.

“What?””

I lowered my eyes.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

The pain in his voice hurt.

“When were you going to tell me?””

I didn’t have an answer.

Because the truth was complicated.

After my husband died, I had been overwhelmed.

Grief had made every decision feel impossible.

Then Vanessa came into my life.

She offered help.

She told me I shouldn’t worry about legal matters.

She said Marcus was busy.

She said she could handle things.

And I believed her.

Because I wanted to believe family would never hurt me.

Daniel continued.

“Mrs. Carter, the reason I called is because Vanessa misunderstood the documents.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You told me there was a possibility.””

“There was a possibility only if your mother willingly transferred ownership.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Transferred?””

Daniel continued.

“Vanessa believed she could convince your mother to sign over control.””

The guests stared.

Vanessa’s face became angry.

“I was trying to protect the family.””

“No,” Marcus said.

“You were trying to control my mother.””

She looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Daniel spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone waited.

“What?”” Marcus asked.

Daniel’s voice became lower.

“The document Vanessa asked me to prepare was not just a transfer request.””

My heart sank.

“What was it?””

Daniel answered:

“It was a power of attorney.””

Marcus froze.

A few guests gasped.

I felt my hands shake.

Because suddenly I understood.

It wasn’t just about the house.

It was about my ability to make decisions.

My ability to control my own life.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“You wanted control over everything.””

“No.””

“You did.””

“I was trying to help!””

Daniel interrupted.

“Vanessa, please stop.””

She looked toward the phone.

“Daniel.””

“You know what you asked me to prepare.””

Her face changed.

Because she did know.

Marcus took a step back.

“I trusted you.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I love you.””

Marcus looked away.

The silence that followed was worse than anger.

Then Daniel said something that made everyone turn.

“Mr. Carter…”

“Yes?””

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Your father knew this might happen.””

I felt my breath disappear.

Marcus looked at me.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel answered:

“It means your father left a second letter.””

My heart stopped.

“A second letter?””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked around.

“Where is it?””

I felt every eye turn toward me.

May you like

Because I knew exactly where it was.

And I had spent years praying nobody would ever need to read it.
