Chapter 8: The Man Behind Vanessa’s Plan

“Why would Dad mention Daniel?””

Marcus’s question hung in the air.

Nobody moved.

The string lights continued glowing above us.

The grill continued burning.

The music continued playing softly.

Everything looked normal.

But nothing was normal anymore.

Vanessa recovered first.

She always did.

“That’s impossible.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What is?””

“That letter cannot mention Daniel.””

“Why?””

“Because…”

She stopped.

A mistake.

A tiny pause.

But enough.

Marcus noticed.

“Because how would you know what it says?””

Vanessa’s mouth tightened.

“I don’t.””

“You just said it couldn’t.””

She looked away.

“I meant it doesn’t make sense.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You know something.””

“No.””

“Vanessa.””

“No!””

Her voice cracked.

The guests jumped.

She lowered it immediately.

“I’m just saying this is getting out of control.””

I watched her carefully.

She was no longer controlling the conversation.

That was why she was unraveling.

Marcus held the letter.

“Mom, what did Dad know?””

I looked at him.

“Your father was careful.””

“Careful about what?””

“About people who saw our family as an opportunity.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa again.

“Did he ever meet Daniel?””

I shook my head.

“Not that I know of.””

Vanessa exhaled.

“There. You see? This proves nothing.””

Marcus didn’t respond.

Instead, he turned back to the letter.

He read another line.

Then another.

His face became harder with each sentence.

“What else is in there?””

I hesitated.

“There’s a name.””

“Whose?””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Daniel’s.””

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Marcus looked up.

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

She pointed at the letter.

“Your mother is upset. She’s confused. She’s bringing up things from years ago because she wants you to hate me.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not because she insulted me.

Because she was still doing it.

Still rewriting reality.

Still turning herself into the victim.

Marcus looked at me.

“Mom?””

I shook my head.

“I never wanted you to hate her.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Of course not.””

I looked at her.

“I wanted you to see her.””

That silenced her.

Marcus lowered the letter.

“Who is Daniel?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who?””

Finally, she whispered:

“He’s a consultant.””

“A consultant for what?””

She looked away.

“Financial matters.””

Marcus stared.

“And why is a financial consultant talking about my mother signing papers?””

Silence.

Then Vanessa said something I never expected.

“Because someone had to think about what happens when she can’t.””

The words hit me.

Marcus’s face changed instantly.

“You mean when she dies?””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

But she didn’t have to.

A few relatives gasped.

Marcus looked disgusted.

“She’s standing right here.””

“I didn’t mean it like that.””

“How did you mean it?””

“I mean reality.””

He shook his head.

“No. You mean convenience.””

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“You have no idea how much pressure I’ve been under.””

“Pressure?””

“Yes!””

Her voice rose.

“Do you know what it’s like managing everything? The bills? The house? The responsibilities?””

Marcus stared.

“The house?””

She stopped.

Again.

That word.

The house.

Marcus held up the phone.

“Why did you message Daniel about getting the house?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I didn’t.””

“You did.””

“You’re misunderstanding.””

“Then explain.””

She had nothing.

For the first time, Vanessa had nothing.

Marcus looked at me.

“Mom.””

I knew what he was asking.

And I knew it was time.

“The house was never mine alone.””

Vanessa immediately looked at me.

“What?””

I took a breath.

“Your father made sure of that.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

I looked at the documents.

“It means your father left instructions.””

“Instructions about the house?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Evelyn, stop.””

I ignored her.

Marcus deserved the truth.

Everyone deserved the truth.

“Your father knew that one day someone might try to take control of everything.””

Marcus looked at the letter again.

“What did he leave?””

I reached for the envelope.

Inside was one final document.

The one I had avoided reading for years.

The one that held the answer.

I handed it to him.

He unfolded it.

His eyes scanned the page.

Then he whispered:

“Mom…”

“What?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“This says Vanessa was never supposed to have access to the property.””

The backyard exploded into whispers.

Vanessa stepped backward.

“That’s not possible.””

Marcus held the document tighter.

“It’s right here.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became desperate.

“No, Daniel told me something different.””

Marcus looked up.

“Daniel told you?””

The silence returned.

May you like

And this time…

Vanessa knew she had exposed herself.
