Chapter 14: The Person Behind Vanessa
“Who?””
Marcus’s voice was low.
Dangerously calm.
Vanessa looked toward the backyard door.
Nobody moved.
The name stayed trapped behind her lips.
Finally, she whispered:
“Your brother.””
The room exploded with confusion.
Marcus stared.
“What?””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“My brother?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Your half-brother.””
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
Because there was only one person she could mean.
Someone from my husband’s past.
Someone Marcus barely knew.
Someone who had disappeared years ago.
Marcus looked at me.
“Mom?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know what to say.
Vanessa saw the reaction.
“You know who I mean.””
I closed my eyes.
“Yes.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Who?””
I looked at him.
“Your father had another son before we met.””
The words shocked him.
“I didn’t know.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
“Because your father wanted to protect you.””
Marcus shook his head.
“So everyone knew something except me?””
The pain in his voice hurt.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
He stepped away.
“All my life, everyone decided what I could handle.””
Nobody spoke.
Because he was right.
I had protected him.
His father had protected him.
And somehow, all that protection created another kind of pain.
The feeling of being left outside his own family’s story.
Vanessa spoke quietly.
“His name is Adrian.””
Marcus looked at her.
“How do you know him?””
She hesitated.
And that hesitation told us everything.
“You contacted him.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“How?””
“Daniel found him.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Is this true?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel sighed.
“Because Vanessa believed Adrian had a claim.””
Marcus looked disgusted.
“A claim to what?””
“The property.””
Of course.
Always the property.
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” Marcus said.
“I’m trying to understand how many people knew about this before me.””
She looked at him.
“I thought I was helping you.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because I was.””
“By working with someone who wanted my mother’s home?””
“No.””
She looked desperate.
“Adrian told me your father promised him something.””
I looked at the floor.
Because I remembered.
Years ago.
The conversations my husband avoided.
The sadness in his eyes whenever Adrian’s name came up.
Marcus noticed my reaction.
“Mom?””
I looked at him.
“Your father regretted many things.””
“Like what?””
“Like not fixing things sooner.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Exactly.””
Everyone looked at her.
She continued.
“He wanted to make things right.””
“With what?””
She pointed toward the documents.
“With the inheritance.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That doesn’t mean you get to manipulate my mother.””
“I know.””
For the first time, Vanessa sounded sincere.
“I know.””
The room went quiet.
Marcus looked surprised.
Maybe because it was the first time she admitted wrongdoing.
Daniel spoke.
“There’s more.””
Everyone turned.
“More?””
Daniel nodded.
“Adrian contacted me before Vanessa did.””
My eyes widened.
“What?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at the phone.
“Because he believed the property should belong to him.””
Marcus stared.
“And Vanessa?””
“She became involved later.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You didn’t start this.””
She looked down.
“No.””
“Then why continue?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I thought I could benefit from it.””
The honesty was painful.
But necessary.
Marcus closed his eyes.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then he said:
“Thank you for finally telling the truth.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
He looked at her.
“I believe you’re sorry.””
A pause.
“But I don’t know if that fixes anything.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
The backyard was quiet again.
The dinner.
The decorations.
The celebration.
Everything from earlier felt like it belonged to another lifetime.
Then Marcus’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
Older.
Confident.
“I assume you finally know the truth.””
Marcus froze.
“Who is this?””
The man laughed softly.
“You know exactly who.””
My heart stopped.
Adrian.
Marcus looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
Then he turned away.
“Why are you calling?””
The voice answered:
“Because Vanessa told you the first half.””
Marcus tightened his grip on the phone.
“And the second half?””
A pause.
Then:
“The second half is that your father never wanted Evelyn to keep that house.””
Nobody moved.
I felt the world tilt.
Marcus’s face changed.
“What did you say?””
The voice continued:
“Your mother has been protecting a secret for years.””
I stepped forward.
“Marcus…”
The phone remained silent.
May you like
Then Adrian said:
“And she never told you why your father changed his will.””
