Chapter 4: The Son Who Chose Greed

Ethan had always been the golden child.

That was the part Claire hated admitting.

Not because she was jealous.

She wasn’t.

But because it explained everything.

Growing up, Ethan was the one everyone praised.

He was the first son.

The confident one.

The one teachers remembered.

The one relatives talked about at family gatherings.

“He’s going places,” people always said.

And Rose believed them.

She believed in him harder than anyone.

Claire remembered watching her mother defend Ethan even when he was wrong.

When he crashed the family car at nineteen, Rose said he was young and learning.

When he dropped out of a program he promised he would finish, Rose said he would find his path.

When he started making risky financial choices, Rose said he was ambitious.

Claire had always wondered what would happen if Ethan ever realized how much power his mother’s love gave him.

Now she knew.

He used it.

“You’re acting like I’m some kind of criminal.””

Ethan’s voice pulled Claire back into the moment.

She looked at him.

“Aren’t you?””

His face tightened.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

“I explained.””

“No. You gave excuses.””

Ethan walked into the office.

“You have no idea what I’ve done for this family.””

Claire almost smiled.

That sentence.

She had heard it before.

People who hurt others often talked about their sacrifices first.

“I’ve kept this house running.””

Claire looked around.

“You mean the house you took from her?””

“I protected her.””

“By controlling her?””

Ethan shook his head.

“You’re twisting things.””

Vanessa stepped beside him.

“You’re making him out to be the villain because you walked in at the worst possible moment.””

Claire looked at her.

“The worst possible moment?””

She pointed toward the foyer.

“My mother was on the floor.””

Neither of them answered.

Claire turned to Rose.

“Tell me the truth.””

Rose looked scared.

Not of Claire.

Of what the truth would destroy.

“Mom.””

Rose took a breath.

“After your father died, I was overwhelmed.””

Claire nodded.

“I know.””

“Ethan offered to help.””

Claire watched her.

“He said he would manage the bills. He said I had enough to worry about.””

“And then?””

Rose looked at Ethan.

“He started asking me to sign things.””

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“What things?””

“I don’t know.””

Ethan interrupted.

“She wasn’t in the right state of mind.””

The room went silent.

Claire looked at him.

“What did you just say?””

Ethan realized too late.

“I meant she was grieving.””

“No.””

Claire stepped forward.

“You meant she was vulnerable.””

Rose’s eyes filled with tears.

Claire reached for her hand.

“You signed documents because you trusted him.””

Rose nodded slowly.

“I thought he was helping.””

Ethan looked uncomfortable now.

For the first time, his confidence was gone.

Claire saw it.

He wasn’t prepared for Rose to speak.

He expected silence.

He expected obedience.

He expected everyone to protect him.

But Rose was tired.

Years of being quiet had finally caught up with her.

“Mom,” Claire said softly, “what else happened?””

Rose looked toward the floor.

Then she whispered:

“He told me you didn’t have time for me.””

Claire froze.

“What?””

“He said you were building your career. That you didn’t want to be bothered with my problems.””

Claire looked at Ethan.

A painful laugh escaped her.

“You told her that?””

Ethan said nothing.

Claire felt tears sting her eyes.

Not because she believed him.

Because she couldn’t believe he had tried to make their mother feel abandoned.

“You made her think she had nobody.””

Vanessa looked away.

That small reaction told Claire something.

She knew.

Maybe not every detail.

But enough.

Claire stepped toward the two of them.

“You didn’t just take money.””

Her voice shook.

“You took her confidence.””

Ethan’s face hardened again.

“You need to leave.””

Claire stared.

“Excuse me?””

“This is my house.””

Claire looked at Rose.

Then back at him.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“This is the house where my mother raised us.””

She walked closer.

“And tonight, she decides what happens next.””

Ethan laughed.

“You think she’s going to choose you?””

Rose looked up.

A long silence followed.

Then she said something that made Ethan’s expression change completely.

“I should have listened to Claire.””

Nobody moved.

Rose wiped her tears.

“I should have asked questions.””

Ethan stared at her.

“Mom.””

But Rose continued.

“I trusted you because you were my son.””

Her voice cracked.

“And you used that.””

Vanessa’s hand slowly slipped from the railing.

Claire saw the fear return to her face.

Because this was no longer just an argument.

The balance had shifted.

Rose was finally speaking.

And Claire was finally ready to listen.

She looked at the documents in her hand.

The missing money.

The signatures.

The lies.

There was still more.

She knew it.

And judging by the way Ethan and Vanessa looked at each other, they knew it too.

Claire closed the folder.

“We’re going to find out everything.””

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t know what you’re starting.””

Claire held his gaze.

“Yes, I do.””

May you like

She looked at her mother.

“I’m ending what you started.””
