Chapter 6: The Evidence in the Basement

The basement was the one place in the mansion nobody talked about.

Claire noticed that immediately.

When she asked Ethan where old financial records were stored, he answered too quickly.

“There’s nothing important down there.””

That was exactly why Claire wanted to see it.

People didn’t rush to dismiss things unless they were afraid of what someone might find.

Ethan followed her down the stairs.

“You’re really doing this?””

Claire didn’t turn around.

“Yes.””

“You’re treating me like an enemy.””

Claire stopped.

“No.””

She looked back at him.

“I’m treating you like someone who refuses to tell the truth.””

Ethan’s face tightened.

“You think I wanted this?””

Claire stared.

“Wanted what?””

“This situation.””

She waited.

He looked away.

That told her everything.

Because Ethan always had a story.

Always had a reason.

But reasons weren’t the same as innocence.

The basement door opened with a heavy sound.

Inside were boxes.

Old furniture.

Storage containers.

A lifetime of things people thought they had forgotten.

Ethan crossed his arms.

“Happy?””

Claire ignored him.

She searched through boxes.

Most contained ordinary things.

Old decorations.

Family photos.

Receipts.

Then she found a locked file cabinet.

She looked at Ethan.

“What’s this?””

His expression changed.

“Nothing.””

Claire almost laughed.

“Nothing has a lock?””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Leave it.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“Claire.””

She turned toward him.

“Why are you scared of a file cabinet?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Claire called Melissa.

Within minutes, she explained what she found.

Melissa’s response was simple.

“Don’t touch anything else. Take pictures.””

Claire started documenting everything.

Inside the cabinet were copies of documents.

Not originals.

Copies.

That detail bothered her.

Someone had created a backup.

Someone expected they might need to hide something.

She found paperwork related to the house.

Then she found something that made her stop breathing.

A power of attorney form.

Rose’s name.

Ethan’s name.

Claire read the page carefully.

Her hands started shaking.

“Mom never mentioned this.””

Ethan said nothing.

Claire looked at him.

“You made yourself legally responsible for her decisions?””

“I was helping.””

“No.””

She held up the paper.

“You gave yourself control.””

Ethan’s voice lowered.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Silence.

Claire kept searching.

Then she found another document.

A bank transfer record.

Her name was listed.

Claire stared.

“What is this?””

Ethan moved closer.

“Claire.””

She stepped back.

“No.””

Her voice became cold.

“You don’t get to interrupt.””

She looked at the paper again.

The account showed money transferred from Rose’s funds into another account.

An account connected to a business.

A business Claire recognized.

Ethan’s company.

“You used her money for your business.””

Ethan’s face changed.

“That wasn’t like that.””

“How was it?””

“It was temporary.””

Claire stared at him.

“Temporary?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

He didn’t answer.

“How long, Ethan?””

His silence was enough.

Claire felt sick.

Because suddenly she understood.

This wasn’t about bills.

It wasn’t about helping Rose.

It wasn’t about family.

Ethan had seen their mother’s trust as an opportunity.

He had taken what she built and used it to build himself.

Claire walked upstairs holding the documents.

Ethan followed.

“You don’t know the whole story.””

Claire turned around.

“Then tell me.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs.

“What happened?””

Claire looked at her.

“I found the truth.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

Ethan immediately looked at her.

A silent conversation passed between them.

A conversation Claire didn’t miss.

They weren’t surprised.

They were afraid.

Claire walked into the foyer.

Rose stood there.

She looked at the papers in Claire’s hands.

“What did you find?””

Claire swallowed.

Then she answered.

“Mom, he used your money to fund his business.””

Rose went completely still.

The pain on her face was different this time.

Not confusion.

Not fear.

Betrayal.

Because losing money hurt.

But learning someone you loved used you hurt more.

Rose looked at Ethan.

“Is that true?””

Ethan looked away.

And that was when Rose understood.

Her son had taken more than her savings.

He had taken her trust.

Claire stepped beside her.

“This isn’t over.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Claire held his gaze.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

She looked at her mother.

“I’m making sure she never feels powerless again.””

May you like

And for the first time, Ethan looked less like a man in control.

And more like someone who knew the walls were closing in.
