Chapter 8: The Secret Vanessa Hid
Claire thought Ethan was the biggest betrayal.
She was wrong.
Because Ethan’s actions came from greed.
Vanessa’s came from something colder.
Control.
The next morning, Claire found Vanessa sitting alone in the living room.
For once, she wasn’t dressed like she was preparing for a photo shoot.
No silk robe.
No perfect makeup.
Just a woman sitting quietly with a cup of coffee.
Claire almost walked past.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“You think you know everything.””
Claire stopped.
“I know enough.””
Vanessa looked up.
“No, you don’t.””
Claire turned.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa placed the coffee down.
“Ethan wasn’t the only person making decisions.””
The words immediately caught Claire’s attention.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
Then lowered her voice.
“It means you should ask where the money really went.””
Claire studied her.
“You expect me to trust you?””
“No.””
Vanessa gave a small, bitter smile.
“You shouldn’t.””
That answer surprised Claire.
Because it was honest.
“What are you hiding?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I was involved.””
Claire’s expression hardened.
“Involved how?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“I helped Ethan organize things.””
Claire felt anger rise.
“You helped him?””
“Yes.””
“Why would you admit that?””
“Because Ethan is going to blame me.””
Claire stared.
“And are you innocent?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“No,” Claire said.
“You’re not.””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“No.””
For the first time, she looked less like the cruel woman from the staircase.
She looked scared.
“I thought it would be temporary.””
Claire almost laughed.
“Everybody keeps saying that.””
Vanessa looked down.
“At first, Ethan only borrowed money.””
“Borrowed?””
“Yes.””
“Without her knowing?””
Vanessa nodded.
Claire felt disgust.
“And you were okay with that?””
“No.””
The answer came too fast.
Claire noticed.
Vanessa continued.
“I wasn’t okay with it.””
“Then why did you help?””
Vanessa was silent.
Then she whispered:
“Because I was afraid.””
Claire frowned.
“Of Ethan?””
Vanessa nodded.
That complicated things.
Not erased.
Not forgiven.
But complicated.
“He changed after the business started failing.””
Claire listened.
“He became angry. Controlling.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“He told me if I didn’t help him, everything would fall apart.””
Claire crossed her arms.
“So you chose my mother.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I chose myself.””
The honesty was uncomfortable.
But real.
Claire stepped closer.
“And now?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Now I think I helped destroy someone who never did anything to me.””
Before Claire could respond, a loud crash came from the office.
Both women turned.
They ran.
Inside, Ethan stood beside the desk.
Documents were scattered everywhere.
Rose was standing in the doorway.
“What happened?””
Ethan looked furious.
Then he saw Claire.
His anger changed.
“You went through my things.””
Claire stared.
“Your things?””
Melissa stepped into the room behind them.
“We found additional records.””
Ethan froze.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
Claire looked between them.
“What did you find?””
Melissa held a folder.
“Transfers that show money moved from your mother’s account into a private investment account.””
Rose’s voice shook.
“Whose account?””
Melissa looked at Ethan.
Then answered.
“Not his.””
Everyone went silent.
Claire looked at Ethan.
“Then whose?””
Ethan said nothing.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
And Claire knew.
The secret was bigger than she thought.
Melissa looked at the documents again.
“The account belongs to Vanessa.””
Rose looked devastated.
Vanessa whispered:
“I can explain.””
Claire stared at her.
“You better.””
Because now the truth wasn’t just about a son who betrayed his mother.
May you like
It was about a family that had been built on secrets.
And Claire was finally ready to uncover every single one.
