Chapter 10: Two Brothers, One Buried Truth
“Daniel Hale is your mother's son.””
Margaret's words hung in the air long after the call ended.
I sat in the resort's legal office, surrounded by documents that seemed to rewrite my entire life. Julian stood beside the window, one hand pressed against his forehead. Marcus had left to contact the hospital archives, but I could still hear his instructions echoing in my mind.
Preserve the records. Verify the signatures. Find Daniel.
Those were simple instructions.
The truth was anything but simple.
“If Daniel and Ethan are both my brothers,” I said, “why did my grandmother hide it?””
Julian turned away from the window.
“Perhaps she didn't know where the second child went.””
“Margaret said the hospital has an amendment identifying Daniel.””
“That doesn't mean Eleanor knew about it.””
I looked down at the birth certificate.
The handwritten note about a second child had been added in a different ink. Someone had deliberately concealed the information beneath an official seal.
“What if my grandmother knew both boys were alive?”” I asked.
“What if she knew Ethan had been adopted by Robert Hale and Daniel had been placed somewhere else?””
Julian pulled out a chair.
“Then we need to find out why the records were altered.””
I rubbed my temples.
“My mother spent years searching for her first child. If she had twins, she might have spent her entire life searching for the second one, too.””
“Perhaps she did.””
“But why didn't she tell me?””
“Maybe she wanted to protect you from the people who took them.””
I stared at him.
“Or maybe she was protecting the people who took them.””
Julian didn't answer.
I hated how reasonable that possibility sounded.
For years, my mother had been the center of my world. After my father died when I was nineteen, she and Eleanor had helped me through college, my first job, and the early years of my marriage.
She had been gentle, funny, and stubborn in the most endearing ways. She remembered everyone's birthday and kept every handwritten card she received.
She had also kept secrets.
A knock sounded at the door.
Marcus entered carrying a tablet and a thick envelope.
“We've made progress.””
Julian stood.
“Tell us.””
“The hospital archives confirmed that Margaret Whitmore delivered two male infants on October seventeenth, thirty-six years ago. The original registration listed both children under temporary identifiers.””
I gripped the edge of the desk.
“Thirty-six years ago?””
Marcus nodded.
“The first child was transferred to Robert Hale and his wife through a private adoption agency. The second child's placement was authorized under a separate court order.””
“Who adopted him?”” I asked.
“That's the problem. The final adoption record is missing.””
Julian frowned.
“Missing or destroyed?””
“The archive can't determine that. However, we found a financial record connected to the placement.””
He placed a printed page on the desk.
It showed a payment made by a company associated with Robert Hale.
The amount was substantial.
The recipient was a charitable organization that had closed decades earlier.
I read the name aloud.
“Crossroads Children's Foundation.””
Julian's expression changed.
“My father established that foundation.””
I looked up.
“Your father?””
“Yes. It funded medical care, foster placements, and adoption services. I thought it had been dissolved after his death.””
“Could your father have arranged Daniel's adoption?””
“Possibly. But I need the original foundation records before I can say that.””
Marcus continued.
“There is another issue. The court order authorizing the second placement contains a reference number linked to a private account held by Andrew Cross.””
Julian went very still.
“An account I inherited?””
“Yes, sir.””
“Who currently controls it?””
Marcus hesitated.
“The account was transferred into a trust shortly before your father's death. The named administrator is Daniel Hale.””
I looked at Julian.
Daniel had access to an account connected to the adoption of a child whose identity had been concealed for thirty-six years.
He had also been trying to gain control of my grandmother's trust.
Suddenly, his involvement seemed far more deliberate.
“Does Daniel know who he is?”” I asked.
Marcus nodded.
“We found a letter sent to him two years ago. It was addressed to his home in Boston and signed by Robert Hale.””
“What's in it?””
Marcus opened the envelope.
A photocopy of the letter lay inside.
Daniel,
You have spent your life believing you were born into this family. That belief has protected you from questions you were never meant to ask.
Your brother was raised under my roof. Your sister was raised under Eleanor Whitmore's protection. You were placed where you could observe both families without attracting attention.
The Cross account is yours to administer until the conditions of the original settlement are met. Do not allow Grace to discover the truth before the appropriate time.
I read the letter twice.
Then I lowered it.
“He knew.””
Julian's voice was barely audible.
“Daniel knew he was adopted.””
“And he knew Ethan was my mother's son.””
Marcus nodded.
“The letter suggests that Robert Hale deliberately placed Daniel where he could remain connected to both families.””
I felt a wave of anger so sharp that I had to stand.
“They treated their children like pieces on a chessboard.””
Neither man disagreed.
I paced toward the window.
“My mother lost two babies. My grandmother spent years trying to protect me. Ethan married me without telling me who he was. And Daniel has been sitting on a secret that could have changed all our lives.””
I turned back.
“What does the original settlement require?””
Marcus glanced at Julian.
“We haven't found the complete agreement.””
“Then find it.””
“We're trying.””
“No. Someone has it. Someone has known about this for decades. I want to know who.””
Julian approached me.
“Grace, we'll get the records.””
I looked at him.
“Promise me something.””
“What?””
“If we discover that you and I are related, we won't let anyone use that fact to control us.””
His expression softened.
“I promise.””
“And if we discover that Ethan and Daniel have been manipulating both families, we won't let them turn this into a private family dispute that disappears behind closed doors.””
Julian nodded.
“We'll follow the evidence, wherever it leads.””
My phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from an unknown number.
You have the wrong story.
Another message followed.
Ethan was never meant to be your brother.
Then a photograph appeared.
It showed a hospital room with two bassinets. A nurse stood between them, holding a clipboard.
On the back wall was a clock.
The date beneath the photograph read October 17.
But the photograph had been taken at a different hospital from the one named on the birth certificate.
I enlarged the image.
A small sign beside the door read *ST. CATHERINE'S MATERNITY WARD*.
“Marcus,” I said, “can you identify this hospital?””
He examined the picture.
“St. Catherine's closed twenty years ago. The building is now part of a private medical research center.””
“Who sent this?””
“We'll trace the number.””
I looked at the photograph again.
Two babies.
Two identities.
Two families built around a lie.
Then I noticed something else.
One bassinet carried a white tag.
The other carried a blue tag.
Beneath the blue tag was a name written in faded ink.
*Cross, Julian.*
I stared at the photograph.
Julian came to stand beside me.
“That's impossible,” he whispered.
Because the photograph appeared to show that three children—not two—had been connected to the same secret.
And if the name on the blue tag was genuine, then Julian's own birth might have been part of the arrangement.

Before either of us could speak, another message appeared.
Ask Andrew Cross who was really in the second bassinet.
