Chapter 7: The Bloodline Nobody Was Supposed to Discover

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

The rain tapped against the harbor windows. Somewhere outside, a boat horn sounded through the darkness. But inside the small room, every sound seemed impossibly distant.

I stared at Charlotte's document.

You and Julian may share the same father.

“No,” I whispered.

Julian immediately stepped away from the table.

“Charlotte, how certain are you about this?””

“I'm not certain. That's why I brought the records.””

“You disappeared for three years, and now you return with a forged declaration, an old birth certificate, and a claim that Grace might be my sister?””

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like someone wants to destroy both of us.””

Charlotte flinched.

I looked between them.

“Stop.””

Both siblings turned toward me.

“I need answers, not another argument between people who already know half the story.””

Charlotte lowered her eyes.

I picked up the birth record and examined it carefully. The paper was yellowed around the edges. My grandmother's name appeared in a typeface consistent with old hospital records, but the amendment identifying Andrew Cross as my biological father looked newer.

“Who gave you this?”” I asked.

“Daniel Hale.””

I looked up sharply.

“Daniel?””

“Yes. He contacted me six weeks ago. He said he had evidence that our father had secretly fathered a child with Eleanor Whitmore.””

“And you believed him?””

“No. Not at first.””

“Then why meet him?””

“Because he showed me the original settlement records. Some of them were authentic. Others had been altered.””

Julian folded his arms.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Charlotte's eyes filled.

“Because Daniel threatened you.””

The anger disappeared from Julian's face, replaced by something colder.

“What did he say?””

“He said if I contacted you, he would release documents suggesting that you had participated in financial misconduct connected to our father's estate. He had fabricated emails and copied your signature onto several authorization forms.””

Julian stared at her.

“So you disappeared to protect me?””

“I thought I could expose him without involving you.””

“You could have told me.””

“I was afraid.””

“You left me to believe you were dead.””

Charlotte pressed her lips together.

For the first time, I saw the frightened young woman beneath the billionaire's sister. She wasn't defending herself because she thought she had done the right thing. She was struggling to explain why fear had made her choose silence.

“I am sorry,” she whispered.

Julian turned toward the window.

I understood the feeling.

There were apologies that could not restore what had been lost.

I returned my attention to the documents.

“Charlotte, you said Daniel gave you the birth record. Why would he want you to believe Julian and I might share a father?””

“Because if you're Andrew Cross's biological daughter, the old trust agreement becomes much more complicated. Daniel believes he can use the claim to challenge the ownership structure and force a settlement.””

“But my grandmother raised me. She was my mother's mother.””

“Yes.””

“My mother was Eleanor's daughter.””

Charlotte nodded.

“Then how could Andrew Cross be my father?””

She hesitated.

“Your grandmother had a daughter named Margaret who died shortly after you were born. The official family records say Margaret was your mother.””

I swallowed.

“That's correct.””

“But there are inconsistencies in the original hospital records. The name on the first birth registration was Eleanor's. The amendment identifying Margaret as your mother was filed several days later.””

I stared at her.

“My grandmother never told me any of this.””

“Perhaps she was protecting you.””

“From what?””

Charlotte glanced at Julian.

“From a scandal that could have destroyed two families.””

Julian turned away from the window.

“Or from someone who wanted to control her.””

His voice was quiet, but I heard the anger underneath it.

I placed the papers on the table.

“I'm not going to accept that I'm related to Julian because somebody brought us a suspicious document. I want an independent DNA test. I want the original hospital records. And I want to know why Daniel Hale is involved.””

Charlotte nodded.

“That is exactly what I hoped you would say.””

Julian looked at her.

“Then tell us where Daniel is.””

“I don't know.””

“Charlotte.””

“I'm telling you the truth. He contacted me through intermediaries. We met twice. The second time, he told me Ethan had already filed the emergency petition against Grace's trust.””

“Did Ethan know about the supposed family connection?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Months, possibly longer.””

My stomach tightened.

Ethan had known about the trust, the forged documents, and the possibility that Julian and I shared a father.

And he had still brought Vanessa to the island.

I suddenly remembered something from six weeks earlier.

Ethan had come home late one night carrying a bottle of champagne. He had kissed my cheek and told me his business was finally turning around.

“We're going to be comfortable soon, Grace,” he had said.

“You won't have to worry about money anymore.””

I had smiled.

I had believed him.

Now I wondered whether he had been celebrating the beginning of a plan that would strip me of everything Eleanor had left me.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Margaret appeared.

The sealed declaration has been located. I am sending a secure copy now. Please do not sign anything presented by Ethan or his representatives.

An attachment followed.

I opened it.

The document was titled Declaration of Eleanor Whitmore Concerning the Whitmore Trust and the Cross Settlement.

The first page explained that Eleanor had established the trust to protect assets she had inherited and investments she had made during her lifetime.

The second page described a dispute between Andrew Cross and Robert Hale.

The third page contained a handwritten statement.

No beneficiary may claim additional rights through biological relationship alone. Any claim must be supported by verified records and adjudicated under the laws governing the trust.

I exhaled.

“That's important,” I said.

Julian leaned over to read it.

“Very.””

But the next paragraph made my pulse quicken.

Should any party attempt to manufacture a claim of biological inheritance through forged records, the trustee shall suspend all disputed distributions and refer the matter for independent investigation.

I looked at Charlotte.

“My grandmother anticipated this exact situation.””

“Yes,” Charlotte said.

“She knew someone might try to use your identity to challenge the trust.””

“Did she know Daniel would be involved?””

“I don't know.””

The document continued.

The trust's principal shall remain protected regardless of any future dispute concerning the identity of the beneficiaries.

For the first time that evening, I felt something resembling relief.

Ethan couldn't simply take the money because he had filed a petition.

Daniel couldn't force the trustee to hand over the assets because he had produced a suspicious birth certificate.

And whatever the truth about my family, it wouldn't automatically make my inheritance his property.

Then I reached the final page.

At the bottom was a clause concerning the appointment of a successor protector if the trustee became incapacitated or conflicted.

The successor protector's name was printed beneath Eleanor's signature.

*Robert Hale.*

I stared at the words.

“Robert Hale was appointed to protect the trust?””

Charlotte nodded slowly.

“That was part of the original arrangement.””

“But he died years ago.””

“Yes. And his successor was supposed to be appointed before his death.””

“Who was the successor?””

Charlotte looked toward the door.

“I don't know.””

A sound came from outside.

Marcus appeared in the doorway, his expression tense.

“Mr. Cross, we have a situation.””

Julian straightened.

“What happened?””

“Mr. Hale has entered the resort's main conference room. He's accompanied by an attorney and two men claiming to represent the trust's beneficiaries.””

My heart began to pound.

“Ethan?””

Marcus nodded.

“He says he has an emergency order authorizing him to act on Grace's behalf.””

“That order doesn't exist,” I said.

Marcus glanced at the tablet in his hand.

“Apparently, he has a document bearing a court seal.””

Julian's face hardened.

“Then we need to see it.””

Marcus hesitated.

“There's one more thing. The attorney accompanying Ethan has already presented the order to the resort's financial administrator.””

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

“It means someone has instructed the resort to freeze the funds associated with your stay and restrict access to the trust's private records.””

I looked at the papers in front of me.

Ethan wasn't simply trying to frighten me anymore.

He was moving.

And if he had managed to obtain a fraudulent court order, he might be much closer to taking control than any of us had realized.

Julian reached for his jacket.

“Let's go.””

I stood beside him.

Before we left, Charlotte caught my wrist.

“Grace, wait.””

I turned.

She looked at me with an urgency that frightened me more than the documents had.

“There is something else about Ethan you need to know.””

“What?””

Charlotte glanced toward the corridor.

“Daniel didn't choose Ethan because they were brothers.””

She swallowed.

“He chose Ethan because Ethan has a connection to your grandmother that none of us understood.””

“What connection?””

May you like

Charlotte's eyes locked onto mine.

“Ethan was adopted.””
