Chapter 3: The Billionaire's Missing Sister

For several seconds, Julian didn't move.

He stood beside the open door, staring at the tablet as though the words on its screen had reached into the past and dragged something terrible into the present.

His security chief, Marcus Bell, waited silently.

I had never seen Julian look uncertain before.

Angry, yes. Disappointed, occasionally. But never as though a single document could threaten to dismantle the life he had built.

“Close the door, Marcus,” Julian said.

Marcus obeyed.

Julian placed the tablet on the coffee table and enlarged the photograph with two fingers.

The image was grainy, captured by a security camera outside the administrative building. Ethan stood beside a woman wearing a cream-colored coat. Her dark hair fell to her shoulders. One hand rested on a black leather handbag.

I leaned closer.

“Is that your sister?””

Julian swallowed.

“Yes.””

“What is her name?””

“Charlotte.””

He said it so softly that I almost didn't hear him.

I had read enough magazine profiles to know the broad outlines of Julian Cross's life. His father had died when he was young. His mother had raised him and his sister in Connecticut before a medical emergency forced Julian to abandon college temporarily and work full-time.

But no article had mentioned a missing sister.

“Why did Ethan say you had a sister?”” I asked.

“And why did you look like you'd seen a ghost when Marcus showed you that picture?””

Julian pulled a chair away from the table and sat down.

“Because Charlotte has been missing for three years.””

The ocean continued moving beyond the terrace.

I could hear a gull calling somewhere in the distance.

“Missing?”” I repeated.

“She disappeared after our father's estate was challenged in court. She left her apartment, abandoned her car at a train station, and never contacted anyone again.””

“Did the police investigate?””

“For eighteen months. We hired private investigators. We followed every lead we could find.””

“And you never found her?””

“No.””

His jaw tightened.

“Until now, apparently.””

I glanced back at the photograph.

The woman in the image was clearly older than the girl in the family photographs I had seen in Julian's office. But there was something familiar about her eyes.

“Why would she be involved in my grandmother's trust?””

“That is the question.””

Julian stood and began pacing.

“Charlotte worked in estate law before she disappeared. She understood trusts, fiduciary duties, and the way people hide money behind complicated corporate structures. If she is involved, she knows exactly what this petition means.””

“What does it mean?””

“That someone is trying to obtain emergency control over the assets before the trustee finishes the fraud investigation.””

I felt cold.

“Can they do that?””

“They can ask a court to intervene. Whether the petition succeeds depends on the evidence.””

“But why would Charlotte help Ethan?””

Julian stopped pacing.

“Because someone may have given her a reason.””

He turned to Marcus.

“Where is she now?””

“The woman left the administrative building at eleven twenty. She was seen entering the marina ten minutes later.””

“Did she board a boat?””

“We're checking the departure logs.””

“Find out whether she is still on the island. Quietly. No confrontation.””

Marcus nodded and left.

I sat on the sofa, gripping the edge of the cushion.

My husband had arrived at the resort with his mistress. I had expected lies, perhaps a humiliating argument, maybe an attempt to persuade me to return home.

I had not expected a missing billionaire's sister to appear in the middle of an inheritance dispute.

“Julian,” I said, “if Charlotte is involved, does that mean Ethan knew she was here?””

“Possibly.””

“Could he have brought her?””

“I don't know.””

“But he came to the island to file a petition against my trust.””

“Yes.””

“Then why bring Vanessa?””

Julian looked at me.

“Perhaps he wanted you to believe his attention was elsewhere.””

The answer made horrible sense.

Ethan had spent months convincing me that his business was struggling. He complained about clients who wouldn't pay and partners who had abandoned him. He told me that if we didn't reorganize our finances, we might lose our house.

Meanwhile, he had been planning this trip.

He had booked a private villa, hired a car, and purchased expensive jewelry for Vanessa. I knew about the jewelry because I had found the receipt in the pocket of his suit jacket.

At the time, I had assumed he had bought it for a client.

Now I wondered how much of our money had funded the affair.

“Did you know my husband was coming here?”” I asked.

“No.””

“Did you know Charlotte might be alive?””

“I hoped she was. I didn't know where she was.””

I studied his face.

“Why didn't you tell me about her before?””

“Because I didn't want my family's history to become another burden for you. You were already dealing with the trust investigation, your pregnancy, and a marriage that was clearly hurting you.””

“You could have trusted me.””

Julian looked away.

“You're right.””

The simple admission surprised me.

I had expected an explanation, perhaps a carefully worded defense. Instead, he accepted the criticism without trying to turn it against me.

That small gesture made something inside me loosen.

A knock sounded at the door.

This time, it was Vanessa.

She stood in the corridor without her sunglasses, her face pale and her eyes swollen. She held a small handbag against her chest.

“I need to talk to Grace,” she said.

Julian glanced at me.

I nodded.

He stepped aside but remained near the door.

Vanessa entered cautiously, looking around the suite before turning toward me.

“I know you probably hate me.””

“I don't know you well enough to hate you.””

She flinched.

“That's worse.””

“Why are you here, Vanessa?””

She drew a shaky breath.

“Because Ethan has been lying to me, too.””

I said nothing.

She reached into her handbag and removed a folded sheet of paper.

“He told me you were separated. He said your marriage was legally over, but that you were trying to take everything he owned because you wanted revenge.””

I stared at her.

“He owns nothing of mine.””

“I know that now.””

She unfolded the paper.

It was a printed email, dated six weeks earlier.

The sender was Ethan's business account. The recipient was an address belonging to a company called Northstar Advisory.

The subject line read: *Whitmore Trust — Final Stage.*

My hands went numb.

“Where did you get this?””

“I found it in his laptop bag. I wasn't looking for anything. I was trying to find the confirmation for our flight home.””

She swallowed.

“I thought he was planning to leave his business. I didn't realize he was planning something involving you.””

Julian took the paper from her.

“Did Ethan know you had this?””

“No. I photographed the email because I thought he might be hiding debts. I didn't understand the details.””

“What else did you find?”” I asked.

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she opened her phone and showed us a photograph of a second email.

It contained a list of proposed transfers from a holding company into several accounts.

One account was registered under Daniel Hale's name.

Another was linked to Northstar Advisory.

The final account belonged to a private company registered in the Cayman Islands.

The name of that company made Julian's expression harden.

“Where did you get this account information?”” he asked.

“From the attachment.””

“Did you send it to anyone?””

“No.””

“Did you tell Ethan you had copied the emails?””

“No. I swear.””

Julian studied the screen.

“This could be important evidence.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I didn't know about the affair until recently. I mean, I knew he was married, but he said you were separated and that you both understood the situation.””

“You knew he was married?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

The admission landed harder than I expected.

At least Ethan hadn't been the only person deceiving her. But Vanessa had known there was a wife somewhere, and she had accepted his explanation without asking whether I had actually agreed to any of it.

I couldn't pretend she was innocent.

Still, I could see the fear in her face.

“Why are you telling me this now?”” I asked.

“Because this morning, when he saw you, he wasn't embarrassed about being caught with me.”” Her voice cracked.

“He was terrified you would find out about the trust.””

She wiped her cheek.

“And when I asked him what he had done, he told me to pack my things and leave the island before sunset.””

Julian's eyes narrowed.

“Did he threaten you?””

“He said if I stayed, I would regret it.””

The room fell silent.

I looked at the email again.

Northstar Advisory.

The name appeared on the trust documents my grandmother's attorney had sent me. It was the company associated with the original unauthorized petition.

“Vanessa,” I said, “did Ethan ever mention a woman named Charlotte?””

She went completely still.

Julian stepped forward.

“You know her?””

Vanessa looked between us.

“I've never met her. But Ethan spoke to someone on the phone two nights ago. I heard him say that the woman would be waiting at the marina.””

“What else did he say?”” Julian asked.

Vanessa closed her eyes, trying to remember.

“He said, ‘Once the papers are signed, the Cross problem disappears.’”

Julian's face hardened.

“And then?””

“He said something about a brother and a debt. I couldn't hear the rest.””

I stood too quickly.

A wave of dizziness passed through me, and Julian immediately steadied my elbow.

“Sit down,” he said.

“I'm fine.””

“You're pregnant, Grace. Sit down.””

I lowered myself onto the sofa, annoyed that he was right.

Vanessa crouched in front of me.

“I am sorry,” she whispered.

“I know that doesn't fix anything.””

“No,” I said.

“It doesn't.””

She nodded, accepting the answer.

“But if Ethan has done something illegal, you need to tell the truth. All of it. Not just the parts that make you look better.””

“I will.””

Julian's phone rang.

He answered immediately.

“Marcus?””

He listened without speaking.

Then his eyes moved toward the terrace doors.

“When?””

Another pause.

“Are you certain?””

His grip tightened around the phone.

“Don't approach her. Keep eyes on the boat and call the local authorities if she attempts to leave.””

He ended the call.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Julian looked at the photograph again.

“Charlotte is still on the island.””

“Where?””

“At the old harbor.””

“And?””

His expression was unreadable.

“She just sent a message to the estate attorney. She says she will cooperate with the investigation, but only if I agree to meet her alone.””

“That's good, isn't it?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because Charlotte knows I would never agree to those terms without asking questions.””

He turned the tablet toward me.

A second message had arrived, containing a photograph of a handwritten note.

The writing was unmistakably feminine.

Julian, I know you think I betrayed you. I know what they told you about our father's estate. But Ethan Hale is not the person you should be afraid of.

Beneath it was one final sentence.

Ask Grace who the father of her baby really is.

My hand flew to my stomach.

Julian stared at the message.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

And somewhere beyond the suite, the distant sound of a boat engine rose above the waves.

I looked at Julian, searching his face for an explanation he didn't have.

Because Ethan was my husband.

May you like

The baby was supposed to be his.

And the only person who could explain why a missing woman had made that accusation was now waiting at the harbor, holding a secret that could destroy both our lives.
