Chapter 13: The Man Who Knew Everything

I couldn’t speak.

The voice on the phone belonged to a stranger.

But the name attached to it belonged to my family.

My uncle.

Daniel Carter.

The man who had disappeared before I was old enough to remember him.

The man my mother never trusted.

The man everyone kept avoiding.

“Ava?””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Like he had been waiting for this moment for years.

“How do you know my name?””

A pause.

Then a quiet laugh.

“Because I watched you grow up.””

My stomach turned.

“What?””

“I know that sounds terrible.””

“It is.””

I heard him sigh.

“Your mother would have said the same thing.””

The mention of my mother made my grip tighten around the phone.

“Where are you?””

“I’m where everything started.””

My eyes moved toward Marcus.

He already knew.

“The accident.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was an answer.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

My father stepped closer.

He heard.

Everyone did.

Robert’s face went pale.

“Daniel.””

The voice on the phone became colder.

“So he finally told you.””

My father looked away.

“You need to stop.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“You stopped years ago. I’m the only one who kept trying to fix what happened.””

I felt anger rise.

“Fix?””

My voice shook.

“You destroyed my family.””

Silence.

Then Daniel said something I didn’t expect.

“I know.””

The honesty surprised me.

“Why did you call me?””

“Because you deserve the truth.””

I looked around the room.

At the evidence.

At the letters.

At the people who had spent years hiding pieces of my life.

“I’m tired of people saying that.””

“I understand.””

“No, you don’t.””

“I do.””

His voice softened.

“Because I spent fourteen years wishing someone would ask me the same questions.””

The call went silent.

Then he said:

“Come to the old highway.””

My father immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel heard.

“Still protecting her?””

My father froze.

“Who?””

“Vanessa.””

The room changed.

Marcus moved closer.

“Daniel, tell us what happened.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Marcus.””

“You’re alive.””

“Yes.””

“You know what Vanessa did.””

“I know what everyone did.””

My father looked angry.

“Stop talking in circles.””

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“You want the truth, Robert?””

“Yes.””

“Then tell Ava what happened before the crash.””

My father looked at me.

And I knew.

There was still another secret.

Another piece.

“Dad?””

He looked destroyed.

“I didn’t tell you everything.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Another lie.

“What now?””

Robert swallowed.

“Your mother wasn’t alone when she crashed.””

The room went silent.

“What does that mean?””

“She had someone in the car.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

My father looked at the phone.

At Daniel.

Then whispered:

“Daniel.””

I felt dizzy.

The voice on the phone became quiet.

“I didn’t hurt her.””

Daniel’s words came fast.

“I swear.””

“Then why were you there?””

A long pause.

“Because your mother asked me to follow her.””

Nobody moved.

“She knew someone was trying to stop her.””

Marcus looked shocked.

“She trusted you?””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“She trusted me because she knew I made mistakes, but she also knew I loved her.””

My father looked away.

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel answered.

“Because Robert begged me.””

Everyone looked at my father.

“You begged him?””

Robert’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was afraid.””

Again.

Always afraid.

Daniel continued.

“He thought if the truth came out, Ava would lose everyone.””

I laughed bitterly.

“She lost everyone anyway.””

Nobody argued.

Daniel spoke again.

“Your mother knew she might not survive that night.””

My breathing stopped.

“She left one final message.””

“What message?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Not a letter.””

“Then what?””

“A recording.””

Marcus looked at the recorder in his hand.

“What?””

Daniel said:

“The second one.””

Everyone froze.

“There were two?””

“Yes.””

I felt cold.

“Where is it?””

Daniel answered:

“Where your mother died.””

The old highway.

The place where everything ended.

And apparently…

where the final truth was waiting.

The officers insisted on coming with us.

Nobody argued.

Not after everything.

The drive was silent.

My father sat in the back seat.

I didn’t look at him.

I couldn’t.

When we arrived, the road looked ordinary.

That was the strangest part.

A place that had changed my entire life looked like any other road.

Trees.

Old pavement.

A broken sign.

Nothing special.

Until Marcus pointed.

“There.””

Near the edge of the road was an old metal box buried beneath leaves.

Daniel’s voice came through the phone.

“Open it.””

My hands shook.

Inside was a small recorder.

And another envelope.

My name.

Again.

I pressed play.

Static.

Then my mother’s voice.

“Ava.””

I started crying immediately.

“If you are hearing this, it means I couldn’t tell you myself.””

A pause.

“I need you to understand something.””

The wind moved around us.

“Your father made a terrible choice.””

Robert closed his eyes.

“But he was not the one who caused the accident.””

I looked at him.

My mother continued.

“The person responsible is someone who believed money was more important than family.””

A pause.

Then:

“Daniel knows the truth.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“But there is one more thing.””

The recording crackled.

“The person who planned everything was never Vanessa.””

Everyone froze.

My mother’s final words came through.

“It was someone who knew how to make Vanessa take the blame.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

Marcus whispered:

“Who?””

Then the phone rang.

Daniel.

Everyone looked at the screen.

I answered.

His voice was shaking.

“Ava…”

“What?””

“I just realized something.””

“What?””

A long pause.

Then:

“The person who controlled Vanessa…”

May you like

His voice dropped.

“Was your grandmother.””
