Chapter 14: The Truth Nobody Expected
For a moment, nobody reacted.
Not because we didn’t understand.
Because we refused to.
Grandma Rose.
The woman who held my hand when I was sick.
The woman who came to every school event.
The woman who carried flowers into my graduation.
The woman who had spent the entire day defending my mother.
No.
My mind rejected it.
“Daniel, stop.””
My voice shook.
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
Grandma stepped back.
The color disappeared from her face.
“Ava…”
I turned toward her.
“Tell me he’s wrong.””
She didn’t answer.
And that silence broke something inside me.
“Grandma.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I never wanted you to know this way.””
My heart dropped.
“What does that mean?””
Robert looked confused.
“Rose?””
Marcus stared at her.
“You knew.””
Grandma sat down.
Slowly.
Like she suddenly felt every year she had lived.
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
Nobody spoke.
I felt betrayed.
But not like before.
This was different.
This was the person I trusted most.
“Why?””
Grandma looked at me.
“Because I was trying to protect you.””
“Everyone says that.””
My voice cracked.
“Everyone says they were protecting me.””
She covered her face.
“I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
She looked at the road.
“At first, I only wanted justice.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“For your daughter?””
Grandma nodded.
“Yes.””
The wind moved around us.
“My daughter found out Vanessa was stealing money. She was going to expose her.””
“I know.””
Grandma looked at me.
“But she didn’t know everything.””
“What didn’t she know?””
Grandma’s hands trembled.
“That Daniel was involved.””
Daniel’s voice came through the phone.
“That’s a lie.””
Grandma looked at the phone.
“You helped her hide evidence.””
“Because Robert was too afraid to act.””
“Yes.””
Grandma nodded.
“And I hated you for it.””
My chest tightened.
“Hated?””
She looked at me.
“I blamed everyone.””
A tear rolled down her face.
“Vanessa. Robert. Daniel.””
She looked at the ground.
“Even myself.””
I whispered:
“What did you do?””
She didn’t answer.
Marcus did.
“She manipulated Vanessa.””
Everyone looked at him.
“She found out Vanessa was scared of losing everything.””
Grandma closed her eyes.
“And I used that fear.””
My stomach turned.
“How?””
She looked at me.
“I convinced Vanessa that if she helped me expose Robert and Daniel, I would protect her.””
Robert stared.
“You worked with her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Grandma’s voice broke.
“Because I thought your mother’s death needed someone to pay.””
Silence.
“And then?””
Grandma looked at me.
“Then I realized Vanessa wasn’t the only person who had lied.””
She looked at Robert.
“She showed me what he had done.””
Robert looked away.
Grandma continued.
“She showed me he left your mother.””
I closed my eyes.
The pain returned.
“But Vanessa also changed the story.””
Marcus nodded.
“Exactly.””
Grandma looked at him.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell her?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Because your mother asked me not to.””
I stared.
“She knew Grandma was involved?””
Marcus nodded.
“She knew.””
My heart broke.
My mother knew everyone’s secrets.
Everyone’s.
But still protected us.
“Why?””
I whispered.
“Why would she protect someone who betrayed her?””
Grandma started crying.
“Because she was better than all of us.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel’s voice returned.
“There’s still one thing missing.””
Everyone looked at the phone.
“What?””
“The reason all of this happened.””
Marcus frowned.
“The money?””
Daniel answered:
“No.””
A pause.
“The money was just the beginning.””
My father looked confused.
“Then what?””
Daniel said:
“Your mother discovered something about the family.””
“What?””
Silence.
Then:
“Something about Ava.””
My body went cold.
“What about me?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Grandma looked terrified.
“Daniel…”
“No more secrets.””
His voice hardened.
“She deserves the truth.””
I looked at everyone.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel said:
“Your mother wasn’t investigating Vanessa.””
“Then who?””
“She was investigating your birth.””
My heart stopped.
The world became silent.
“What?””
Marcus looked away.
Robert closed his eyes.
Grandma started crying.
Daniel whispered:
“Your mother discovered that the DNA test results were changed.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Changed by who?””
Nobody answered.
May you like
Then Grandma whispered:
“By me.””
