Chapter 6: The Truth About My Name

Nobody spoke after Vanessa’s accusation.

Not because they didn’t have questions.

Because every person in that room was afraid of the answer.

I looked at Grandma.

Then at my father.

Then at Marcus.

“Who is my real father?””

The words felt impossible.

Like I had said them about someone else.

Grandma’s face collapsed.

“Ava…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I need to know.””

Robert looked like he had been punched.

Marcus looked away.

And that told me everything.

“You knew?””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

Marcus slowly nodded.

“I knew there was a chance.””

My heart broke.

“A chance?””

Grandma reached for my hand.

“Sweetheart…”

I pulled away.

Not because I didn’t love her.

Because I was scared.

Everyone I loved had carried a secret.

Everyone.

“Was my whole life a lie?””

“No,” Grandma said quickly.

Her voice shook.

“Never that.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

The auditorium was silent.

Finally, Grandma sat down.

She looked older than she had five minutes earlier.

“Your mother loved Robert.””

My father closed his eyes.

“But?””

Grandma looked at me.

“But love and truth are not always the same thing.””

I waited.

“She discovered she was pregnant.””

My heart pounded.

“She and Robert were already having problems.””

I looked at my father.

He didn’t defend himself.

“She met Marcus while working on the company records.””

Marcus lowered his head.

“Your mother and I became close.””

“Close how?””

Nobody answered immediately.

That was answer enough.

I felt tears slide down my face.

“Was he my father?””

Marcus looked at me.

His eyes were full of sadness.

“I don’t know.””

The honesty hurt.

“What do you mean you don’t know?””

“Your mother never told me.””

Grandma touched the necklace around her neck.

“She was going to get a DNA test.””

Vanessa’s voice suddenly came from behind the officers.

“And she never got the chance.””

Everyone looked at her.

She smiled slightly.

“You all want the truth? Fine.””

The officer stepped closer.

“Ma’am, you need to come with us.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“Your mother was going to destroy everything.””

Marcus looked furious.

“She was going to expose your crimes.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Crimes?””

She looked at Robert.

“Tell Ava what happened when your wife confronted me.””

Robert said nothing.

Vanessa’s smile faded.

“Tell her.””

My father whispered:

“She came to the house.””

Grandma looked shocked.

“She went to your house?””

Robert nodded.

“She wanted the financial records.””

“What happened?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“She left angry.””

“And?””

He swallowed.

“I followed her.””

My breathing stopped.

“You followed her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to talk.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“But you weren’t the only one who followed.””

Everyone turned toward Vanessa.

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

My father looked at her.

“You told me you stayed home.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

The officer moved closer.

“Ms. Carter.””

She ignored him.

“You don’t understand.””

I looked at her.

“Then explain.””

Her eyes met mine.

For the first time, she looked tired.

Not powerful.

Not perfect.

Just tired.

“Your mother was going to take everything from me.””

“What?””

“My home. My marriage. My future.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You did that yourself.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You disappeared.””

“I was trying to survive.””

The officer reached for her arm.

She pulled away.

“Wait.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“Your mother left you something else.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

She smiled sadly.

“Something Robert never found.””

My father looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Yellow.

With my name written across the front.

My hands went cold.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

My mother’s.

Vanessa held it up.

“She wanted you to have this when you were eighteen.””

Grandma whispered:

“Where did you get that?””

Vanessa looked at me.

May you like

And said:

“Because I was the last person your mother spoke to before she died.””
