Chapter 2: The Woman Who Came Back From The Grave
I stared at the photograph until the edges started to blur.
There are moments in life when your brain refuses to accept what your eyes are seeing.
This was one of those moments.
Claire.
My Claire.
The woman whose funeral I attended.
The woman whose ashes I held in my hands.
The woman I spent three years trying to explain to Sophie without breaking her heart.
She was alive.
My first thought was anger.
My second was confusion.
My third was the sound of my daughter’s voice.
“Daddy?””
I looked down.
Sophie was watching me.
Children notice everything. Adults lie to themselves, but children see the cracks.
“Who is that?”” she asked.
I swallowed hard.
“That’s your mother.””
Her eyes widened.
“My mommy?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know what was true anymore.
The wedding guests were still standing around, whispering. Some looked at me with sympathy. Others looked like they were enjoying the biggest scandal they had ever witnessed.
I didn’t care.
I took Sophie’s hand and walked outside.
My phone rang before we reached the car.
Unknown number.
Normally, I wouldn’t answer.
But something told me I needed to.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a voice.
A voice I had spent years trying to forget.
“Daniel.””
My entire body froze.
“Claire?””
Sophie looked at me.
“Daddy?””
I turned away.
The voice on the phone trembled.
“I know you’re angry.””
“Angry?””
My voice broke.
“You’re alive.””
“I know.””
“You let me bury you.””
“I had no choice.””
I closed my eyes.
Three years of grief came rushing back.
The nights I sat alone in our house.
The mornings Sophie asked if mommy was coming home.
The way I learned to answer without crying.
“Where are you?””
“I can’t tell you yet.””
I almost yelled.
“You disappear for three years and call me with riddles?””
“I called because Vanessa knows I’m alive.””
That stopped me.
“What?””
“She knows.””
The wind seemed to disappear around me.
“Explain.””
Claire took a shaky breath.
“Vanessa didn’t come into your life by accident, Daniel.””
I looked back toward the building where my canceled wedding was still the only thing people were talking about.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying she targeted you.””
The word felt ugly.
Targeted.
Like I wasn’t a person.
Like I was a prize.
“Why?””
“Because of your family.””
I frowned.
“My family?””
“Your biological family.””
I had heard that phrase before.
Years ago, when I was a child, my adoptive mother used to tell me there were questions about where I came from. She never had answers.
She only told me one thing.
“Some truths find you when you’re ready.””
I always thought it was just something adults said to make painful things sound meaningful.
Claire continued.
“Daniel, your father wasn’t who you thought he was.””
I gripped the phone tighter.
“My father died when I was young.””
“No.””
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“That’s the lie they gave you.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Who are you talking about?””
“Alexander Blackwell.””
The name meant nothing at first.
Then everything.
Every newspaper article.
Every business magazine.
Every story about one of America’s most powerful entrepreneurs.
Alexander Blackwell.
The billionaire who built an empire across technology, real estate, and finance before dying under mysterious circumstances.
“What does he have to do with me?””
“Everything.””
I looked at Sophie.
My daughter was watching my face, trying to understand a conversation she was too young to hear.
Claire’s voice softened.
“I found documents, Daniel. Years ago. Documents proving your father left you ownership rights to a massive portion of his estate.””
I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“That’s impossible.””
“No. What’s impossible is that Vanessa’s father and a corrupt attorney spent years hiding those documents.””
My blood ran cold.
“Why?””
“Because if you knew who you were, you would have inherited control over everything they were trying to steal.””
I thought about Vanessa.
Her kindness.
Her patience.
The way she always asked questions about my business.
Questions I thought came from love.
“What about Sophie?””
Claire became silent.
That silence scared me more than anything.
“What about my daughter?””
“Vanessa got close to her because she needed access to you.””
I felt sick.
“She used my child?””
“Yes.””
The anger that rose inside me was different from before.
This wasn’t heartbreak.
This was protection.
“Where are you?””
“I’m trying to get the evidence back.””
“What evidence?””
“The proof that can expose them.””
A noise came through the phone.
A door closing.
Then Claire whispered.
“Daniel, you need to listen carefully.””
I stepped away from Sophie.
“Okay.””
“Do not trust Vanessa.””
“I already know that.””
“No.””
Her voice became urgent.
“You don’t understand. She isn’t going to walk away because you ended the wedding.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“It means she knows you have something she needs.””
“What?””
“The truth.””
The call ended.
I stood there staring at my phone.
Then I noticed something.
Sophie wasn’t beside me anymore.
My heart dropped.
“Sophie?””
I turned around.
Nothing.
People were leaving the building.
Cars were pulling away.
“Sophie!””
I ran back toward the entrance.
A security guard looked at me.
“Sir?””
“My daughter. She was right here.””
His face changed.
“I thought she was with you.””
The world tilted.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
One sentence.
One picture.
May you like
And every piece of fear inside me became real.
*Give us the files, Daniel, or you’ll never see Sophie again.*
