Chapter 9: The Last Betrayal

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The room felt frozen.

Vincent Marlowe sat across from me, his hands shaking, his expensive suit no longer able to hide the fear in his eyes.

“The person you trusted most.””

His words repeated in my mind.

I looked at Claire.

Then Marcus.

Then Vincent.

“Say the name.””

Vincent swallowed.

“I need protection first.””

My anger exploded.

“You think you get to negotiate after everything you did?””

“Daniel.””

Marcus stepped between us.

“Let him talk.””

I hated that he was right.

Because this wasn’t about my anger.

This was about the truth.

The truth had been stolen from me my entire life.

I needed all of it.

Vincent leaned forward.

“Alexander Blackwell wasn’t only fighting Richard Cole.””

“Who else?””

“Your mother.””

The room went silent.

I felt like someone had punched the air out of my lungs.

“My adoptive mother?””

Vincent nodded slowly.

“No.””

He looked directly at me.

“Your biological mother.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Claire’s face changed.

She knew something.

And that scared me.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Claire looked away.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice was sharp.

“Not this time.””

I turned toward Vincent.

“Explain.””

Vincent took a deep breath.

“Alexander Blackwell had a wife before anyone knew about you. Her name was Evelyn Blackwell.””

I felt the room spinning.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

Vincent looked at the documents in front of him.

“Your adoptive parents didn’t just rescue you. They helped hide you.””

I grabbed the edge of the table.

“From who?””

“From everyone.””

Vincent’s voice lowered.

“After Alexander discovered Richard’s theft, he started preparing a legal battle. But Richard knew Alexander had one weakness.””

“Me.””

Vincent nodded.

“You.””

I closed my eyes.

All those years.

All those questions.

All those missing pieces.

“Then what happened?””

Vincent looked ashamed.

“Richard arranged for Alexander’s death. Evelyn tried to expose him. But she disappeared shortly afterward.””

My heart stopped.

“Disappeared?””

Vincent nodded.

“They made it look like she abandoned you.””

I looked at Claire.

“And you knew?””

“I knew some of it.””

Her voice trembled.

“I found records connecting Evelyn to Richard’s crimes. But I didn’t know everything.””

I turned away.

Too many secrets.

Too many people deciding what I could handle.

Vincent continued.

“After Evelyn disappeared, your adoptive parents took you away. They changed your name. They protected you.””

“Then why did Richard wait so long?””

“Because he couldn’t find you.””

I looked at him.

“Until Vanessa.””

Vincent nodded.

“She found you through your company.””

The pieces came together.

The networking events.

The charity dinners.

The way Vanessa always seemed to appear at exactly the right moment.

She didn’t find me.

She hunted me.

Then Marcus received a call.

He stepped away.

His expression changed.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Are you sure?””

He looked at me.

“We found Richard.””

Everyone stood.

“Where?””

Marcus put the phone down.

“At the old Blackwell estate.””

My stomach tightened.

The estate.

The place connected to everything.

My father.

My mother.

My stolen identity.

My missing history.

We arrived there under heavy police protection.

The mansion stood exactly like the pictures I had seen growing up.

Huge.

Beautiful.

Lonely.

A monument to a family I never knew.

Inside, officers searched every room.

Then we found them.

Richard Cole.

And Vanessa.

They were in Alexander’s old study.

The same room where my father had once made decisions that changed industries.

Richard looked at me.

For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

“You finally found your way home.””

I stepped forward.

“This was never your home.””

He smiled.

“You don’t understand what you are.””

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

He laughed.

“You think you’re a victim.””

I stared at him.

“You murdered my father.””

His smile disappeared.

“That’s what they told you?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, listen to us.””

I almost laughed.

“You still think I’ll believe you?””

Her expression hardened.

“You have no idea what Alexander was capable of.””

“Neither of you do.””

I held up the evidence.

“The truth is finally coming out.””

Richard looked at the papers.

Then smiled.

“You think paperwork can defeat power?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“No.””

He showed his badge.

“But evidence can.””

Richard’s face changed.

Vanessa looked around.

She knew it was over.

But then Richard said something that made everyone freeze.

“You want the truth?””

He pointed at me.

“Ask him about the woman who raised him.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“What?””

Richard smiled.

“She wasn’t protecting you.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Stop.””

Richard ignored her.

“She was hiding something.””

I looked at Claire.

And I hated that a small part of me wondered.

Not because I believed him.

Because I was tired of secrets.

Richard continued.

“Your entire life has been built on lies.””

Then police moved in.

The room erupted.

Officers grabbed Richard and Vanessa.

But even as they were taken away, Richard kept smiling.

Because he knew one thing.

May you like

The truth was still waiting.

And I wasn’t ready for it.
