Chapter 8: The Final Lie

The next morning, the entire world knew my name.

Not Daniel Hayes.

Not the successful entrepreneur.

Not the man who canceled his wedding in front of hundreds of people.

The headlines said:

*MYSTERY SURROUNDS BLACKWELL HEIR REVELATION*

*MISSING BILLIONAIRE’S FAMILY SECRET EXPOSED*

I hated every word.

Because they made my pain sound like entertainment.

They didn’t see Sophie.

They didn’t see Claire crying in the kitchen because she missed years she could never get back.

They didn’t see me standing in my office wondering if I even knew my own reflection.

Marcus warned me that Richard and Vanessa would likely make one final move.

People like them didn’t run forever.

They ran until they found a way to fight back.

That afternoon, I received an email.

No subject.

No signature.

Just a video file.

My first instinct was not to open it.

My second was stronger.

I clicked.

Vanessa appeared on the screen.

She looked different.

No wedding makeup.

No perfect smile.

No carefully controlled image.

Just anger.

“Daniel,” she said.

“I know you think I betrayed you.””

I almost laughed.

Think?

She continued.

“But you don’t understand the truth.””

I watched silently.

“Your father destroyed many lives.””

The screen shifted.

Old newspaper articles appeared.

Alexander Blackwell’s business empire.

Lawsuits.

Investigations.

Accusations.

Vanessa continued.

“My father didn’t steal from him. He protected people from him.””

I shook my head.

A lie.

A carefully designed lie.

Because that was what people like Vanessa did.

They mixed truth with deception until nobody knew what to believe.

Then the video changed.

A document appeared.

My face disappeared.

Because I recognized the signature.

My adoptive mother’s.

Vanessa spoke again.

“Ask yourself why the woman who raised you never told you who you were.””

That question hit harder than I wanted it to.

Because it was the one doubt I still carried.

Why?

Why did my mother hide everything?

The video ended.

I sat there in silence.

Then Claire walked in.

She saw my face.

“What happened?””

I showed her.

She watched the video carefully.

When it ended, she looked troubled.

“She’s using your mother against you.””

“But why?””

“Because she knows that’s the one place you’re vulnerable.””

I stood.

“What if she’s right?””

Claire looked at me.

“Daniel.””

“What if my whole life was built on a lie?””

She walked closer.

“Your mother loved you.””

“You don’t know that.””

“I do.””

“How?””

Claire’s eyes softened.

“Because I met her.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Years ago. Before I disappeared.””

I stared at her.

“She found me.””

Claire sat down.

“She told me the truth about Alexander. She told me she adopted you because she promised your biological family she would protect you.””

My breathing slowed.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she believed the truth would put you in danger.””

I closed my eyes.

Another secret.

Another person trying to protect me by hiding the truth.

It was becoming a pattern.

That night, Marcus brought new information.

“We found Vincent Marlowe.””

My head lifted.

“Where?””

“He’s willing to talk.””

Claire looked concerned.

“Why?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Because Richard and Vanessa abandoned him.””

We drove to a secure location.

The man waiting there looked nothing like the powerful attorney from the old photographs.

He looked broken.

Afraid.

“You’re Alexander Blackwell’s son,” Vincent said.

I stared at him.

“You helped them.””

He looked away.

“Yes.””

“Why should I listen to anything you say?””

“Because I’m the only person alive who knows the entire plan.””

I stepped closer.

“Then start talking.””

Vincent swallowed.

“Your father discovered Richard Cole was stealing from him. He was going to expose him.””

“And?””

“And Richard made sure he couldn’t.””

The room went silent.

“What does that mean?””

Vincent looked at me.

“Your father’s death wasn’t an accident.””

My fists tightened.

“Who killed him?””

Vincent’s voice dropped.

“Richard Cole.””

Before I could respond, he added one more sentence.

“But there’s something you don’t know.””

“What?””

Vincent looked terrified.

“Richard didn’t act alone.””

My heart sank.

“Who helped him?””

Vincent stared directly at me.

“The person you trusted most.””

May you like

And in that moment, I realized the nightmare wasn’t over.

Because the biggest betrayal hadn’t been revealed yet.
