Chapter 10: The Guest Who Was Never Invited
The photograph shook in my hands.
Not because I was afraid of what it showed.
Because I already knew what it meant.
The person standing beside my uncle.
The person who had been present at my wedding.
The person who knew about the key before I ever touched it.
Was someone I had trusted my entire life.
My aunt.
The woman who held my hand at my father’s funeral.
The woman who told me everything would be okay.
The woman who cried harder than anyone when my wife disappeared.
I stared at her face in the photograph.
“She knew.””
Lily’s mother nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
My stomach turned.
“She knew you were alive?””
“Yes.””
“And she knew about Lily?””
The silence answered.
I looked at Adrian.
“How long?””
He looked away.
“That depends on what you mean.””
I stepped closer.
“Don’t play games with me.””
Adrian sighed.
“She knew before anyone else.””
The room felt colder.
I looked at Lily.
She was holding onto her mother’s hand.
A child who had spent her entire life surrounded by adults who knew the truth but chose silence.
“How could everyone do this?””
My wife looked at me.
“I tried to stop it.””
“But you disappeared.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because they threatened you.””
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
Then Adrian spoke.
“Your aunt.””
I looked at him.
“What did she want?””
“The same thing your father discovered.””
The file in my hand suddenly felt heavier.
“Money?””
Adrian nodded.
“Control.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So my entire family fell apart because someone wanted money?””
“No.””
Adrian looked at me.
“Because someone wanted power.””
A sound came from upstairs.
A door opening.
Everyone froze.
Adrian looked toward the ceiling.
“She’s here.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
Then I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Confident.
Coming down the hidden staircase.
The person walking toward us wasn’t hiding.
She wasn’t afraid.
She stepped into the room like she owned it.
My aunt.
She looked exactly the same as she had an hour ago.
Perfect hair.
Perfect dress.
Perfect smile.
But now I saw what I never noticed before.
The coldness behind her eyes.
“Marcus,” she said.
My voice was empty.
“You.””
She smiled sadly.
“I was hoping we could talk before it became like this.””
I stepped in front of Lily.
“You knew.””
She looked at the child.
Then back at me.
“I knew many things.””
“Did you know she was alive?””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“Did you know Lily existed?””
“Yes.””
My hands curled into fists.
“And you said nothing.””
She walked closer.
“I was protecting the family.””
“No.””
My voice echoed.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Her smile disappeared.
“You have no idea what your father left behind.””
“I know enough.””
She looked at the file.
Then at the key.
“You found everything.””
Lily’s mother stepped forward.
“You hurt innocent people.””
My aunt looked at her.
“You should have stayed gone.””
The words made my blood boil.
I moved toward her.
“You don’t get to talk to her like that.””
She looked at me.
“I raised you.””
“You lied to me.””
“I protected you.””
“Everyone says that.””
Her expression changed.
For the first time, she looked angry.
“Because it’s true.””
I stared at her.
“You destroyed my life.””
“No.””
She pointed at the file.
“Your father destroyed it first.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
She took a breath.
“Your father wasn’t the hero you think he was.””
Lily’s mother looked shocked.
“That’s a lie.””
My aunt smiled.
“Is it?””
She reached into her bag.
Then pulled out a document.
A document with my father’s signature.
She placed it on the table.
“Read it.””
I picked it up.
My eyes moved across the page.
And my heart stopped.
It was a confession.
Written by my father.
A confession about a secret he had kept.
A secret involving Lily’s mother.
A secret that changed everything.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
May you like
My aunt smiled.
“The truth you were never supposed to find.””
