Chapter 12: The Truth My Mother Never Told Me

Nobody spoke.

The confession sat on the table between us.

A piece of paper that had just changed the meaning of my entire childhood.

My father wasn’t hunting Lily’s mother.

He was protecting her.

I looked at the woman standing beside me.

The woman I lost.

The woman I found.

The woman who had carried secrets alone for seven years.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.””

“You could trust me.””

She looked at me sadly.

“I thought I could.””

The words hurt.

But I understood.

Because every person in this room had proven one thing.

Trust could be dangerous.

My aunt stepped forward.

“Don’t believe her.””

I turned.

“You already lied enough.””

Her expression hardened.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“No.””

I held up the confession.

“For once, I’m making a choice with the truth.””

She stared at me.

“You think this makes you powerful?””

“No.””

I looked at Lily.

“It makes me her father.””

The little girl wiped her tears.

Her mother held her close.

Adrian walked toward the table.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“More?””

He nodded.

“The confession isn’t complete.””

He turned the paper over.

On the back was another message.

A hidden note.

Written by my father.

Marcus,

If you are reading this, then the people I trusted failed.

My hands shook.

I continued reading.

The person who destroyed this family is not the person everyone suspects.

I looked at my aunt.

Then at Brielle.

Then at Adrian.

The note continued.

The only person who knows the entire truth is the person who was there the night I died.

My breathing stopped.

The room became silent.

The night my father died.

Someone was there.

Someone knew.

Someone watched.

I looked at my aunt.

“You were there.””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You were there when he died.””

Her face changed.

“I was trying to save him.””

“From who?””

No answer.

“From who?””

Her eyes moved toward Adrian.

And Adrian looked away.

My stomach dropped.

“You know.””

Adrian was silent.

“You know who killed my father.””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Before he could answer, the church above us shook.

A loud crash.

Everyone looked upward.

Then the sound of breaking glass.

Someone was inside.

My aunt smiled.

Not because she was happy.

Because she knew something we didn’t.

“They came.””

I stepped back.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“The people who don’t want you to hear the rest.””

The lights flickered.

Again.

Then the screen behind us turned on.

A new video started playing.

Not from Lily’s mother.

From my father.

His face appeared.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

My entire body froze.

I had not seen him in years.

The recording began.

“Marcus.””

My father looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, I’m probably gone.””

Lily held my hand.

My father continued.

“There is one person you must never trust.””

The video paused.

Static filled the room.

Then his voice returned.

“The person who raised you.””

I looked at my aunt.

Her face went completely white.

The video continued.

“Because they are the reason I died.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then my father said one final sentence:

“And Marcus… your real family is not who you think it is.””

The screen went black.

May you like

And behind us, someone whispered:

“Now you know why we had to keep you away.””
