Chapter 9: The Name On The Hidden File

The room beneath the church felt smaller with every second.

I stood frozen in front of the screen.

The recording had stopped.

But the words remained.

Your father’s death was not an accident.

My entire life had been built on things I never questioned.

My father died.

My wife disappeared.

My family broke apart.

And I accepted every explanation someone gave me.

Because I wanted peace more than I wanted answers.

Now I realized peace had been another word for ignorance.

Lily held my hand.

“Daddy?””

I looked down.

“I’m here.””

She pointed at the screen.

“Mommy looked scared.””

She was right.

The woman in the recording wasn’t just leaving a message.

She was warning me.

I looked around the hidden room.

Boxes covered the walls.

Files.

Photographs.

Evidence.

A life someone had carefully hidden.

I picked up the nearest folder.

On the front was a handwritten label.

“Marcus.””

My name.

I opened it.

Inside were pages of notes.

Dates.

Names.

Events I didn’t remember.

Then I saw one sentence.

The day Marcus’s father died, Brielle was there.

My heart stopped.

I closed my eyes.

“No.””

Lily’s mother stepped into the room behind me.

She had followed us down.

Her face changed when she saw the file.

“You found it.””

I turned.

“You knew about this?””

She nodded.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Everyone had said that.

Everyone.

I was tired of those words.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

She looked hurt.

“I know.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

She walked closer.

“The truth is complicated.””

“Try me.””

She looked at the file.

“Your father discovered someone was stealing from his company.””

I frowned.

“My father owned a company.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“He found out it wasn’t an outsider.””

I looked at her.

“Who was it?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Someone inside your family.””

The room went silent.

I looked at the papers again.

There were names.

Financial records.

Signatures.

Then I saw it.

A signature I recognized.

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

Lily’s mother looked at me.

“You know that name.””

I couldn’t speak.

Because the signature belonged to someone who had attended my wedding.

Someone who had hugged me.

Someone who had told me they were proud of me.

Someone who had helped raise me.

“My uncle?””

She nodded.

My knees weakened.

“My uncle killed my father?””

“I don’t know.””

The answer surprised me.

“But he was involved.””

I looked at her.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because when I tried, I disappeared.””

The words hit me.

“What?””

She looked away.

“I found out too much.””

A sound came from above.

Footsteps.

Everyone looked toward the stairs.

Adrian appeared.

“You’re running out of time.””

I stepped toward him.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at the file in my hand.

“It means whoever wanted this hidden knows you found it.””

The lights in the underground room flickered.

Lily moved closer to me.

“Daddy.””

I held her.

Adrian looked serious for the first time.

“Marcus, listen carefully.””

I stared at him.

“You’re not the only person who was lied to.””

“What?””

“Brielle was manipulated too.””

I frowned.

“She chose this.””

“Yes.””

He paused.

“But she didn’t know who was really controlling everything.””

I looked toward the stairs.

“Who?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Instead, he handed me an envelope.

“What is this?””

“The last thing your wife left before she vanished.””

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

My uncle.

Brielle.

And another person.

Someone I recognized immediately.

Someone standing beside me at my wedding.

Someone who had watched everything happen.

The person who had known Lily would arrive.

The person who knew about the key.

My hands trembled.

“Why is this person in the picture?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Because they weren’t invited to your wedding.””

A pause.

“They planned it.””

The room went silent.

Then Lily’s mother whispered:

“Marcus…”

I looked at the photograph.

May you like

At the face of the person behind everything.

And I realized the person who destroyed my family had been sitting in the front row when I said, “I do.””
