Chapter 5: The Brother I Defended

For almost a full minute after Marcus said the words, I forgot how to breathe.

My brother.

Daniel Carter.

The same man who stood beside me when our father died.

The same man who helped me move into my first apartment after college.

The same man who told me, “Blood is thicker than business,” when I started building Carter Enterprises and everyone around me began treating me differently.

Daniel was the person I defended when people said he only benefited from my success.

I told them they were wrong.

I told them they didn’t know him.

I told them family wasn’t about money.

Now I sat in my office staring at a blank wall, wondering if I had spent years protecting someone who never protected me.

“Arthur?””

Marcus’s voice pulled me back.

“I’m here.””

“You need to understand something,” he said.

“A recording showing someone entering the office doesn’t prove the entire story.””

I nodded slowly.

Because Marcus was always careful.

Evidence first.

Emotion second.

But my emotions were already running wild.

“Send me the footage.””

“I already did.””

My phone buzzed.

A video file appeared.

I stared at it.

I didn’t want to open it.

Because part of me still believed ignorance was easier.

The truth has a strange kind of weight.

Once you know something, you can’t put it back.

I pressed play.

The security camera showed my office.

The date appeared in the corner.

Three weeks before my surprise return home.

The door opened.

Victoria walked in.

She looked around carefully.

Then Daniel entered behind her.

My stomach dropped.

They weren’t arguing.

They weren’t surprised to see each other.

They were comfortable.

Like they had done it before.

Daniel walked straight to my desk.

Victoria stood near the door, watching.

Then Daniel opened the bottom drawer.

The same drawer where Elena’s lockbox had been.

I stopped the video.

I couldn’t watch anymore.

Not yet.

Because seeing Victoria betray me was painful.

Seeing Daniel do it felt impossible.

I walked downstairs.

I found him in the living room.

Of course he was there.

Daniel had always treated my house like his second home.

He was sitting on the couch drinking coffee, reading the newspaper.

Like nothing had changed.

Like he hadn’t just become the person standing on the other side of my life.

He looked up.

“Arthur.””

I studied his face.

Trying to find the brother I knew.

Trying to find some sign that I was wrong.

“What are you doing here?””

He smiled.

“Good morning to you too.””

I didn’t smile back.

“Answer the question.””

His expression changed.

“I came to check on you.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“Or did you come to check what I found?””

Silence.

A small silence.

But enough.

Daniel placed the newspaper down.

“What are you talking about?””

I walked closer.

“Victoria.””

His eyes shifted.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

And suddenly all those years of business meetings and negotiations felt useful.

Because I knew what people looked like when they were hiding.

“You know about the lockbox.””

Daniel sighed.

“Arthur.””

“No.””

I raised my hand.

“Don’t say my name like you’re disappointed in me.””

His face hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Then explain the video.””

That got him.

His shoulders dropped.

“What video?””

I almost laughed.

That was the mistake.

Not the lie.

The timing.

A person telling the truth asks questions.

A person caught asks what evidence exists.

“You and Victoria,” I said.

“My office. Three weeks ago.””

Daniel looked away.

And that hurt more than anger would have.

Because my brother couldn’t even look me in the eye.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

He stood.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

“Because this isn’t just about us.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

Toward Lily’s room.

And my entire body went cold.

“You need to understand something about Elena.””

I stepped closer.

“Don’t talk about my wife.””

His jaw tightened.

“Arthur, Elena knew things.””

“What things?””

“She knew people were trying to take advantage of you.””

“People like you?””

His eyes flashed.

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

I pointed toward the office.

“You went through my wife’s things.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

The words were so unbelievable that I almost couldn’t respond.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“By helping Victoria?””

Daniel looked down.

And that was the answer.

I walked away.

Because if I stayed, I was afraid I would say something I couldn’t take back.

That afternoon, Marcus arrived with more information.

And this time, the news was worse.

“The transfers weren’t random.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

“They were moving assets connected to Lily’s trust.””

My hands tightened.

“Who authorized them?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then placed a folder on the table.

“Your brother.””

I opened it.

Daniel’s signature was there.

My own brother had approved financial movements involving my daughter’s inheritance.

Without telling me.

Without telling Lily.

Without telling anyone.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at me.

“That’s the question.””

I closed the folder.

“No.””

Marcus frowned.

“No?””

I stood.

“We know why.””

“Arthur—”

“He wanted access.””

The realization settled in.

Victoria didn’t act alone.

Daniel didn’t act alone.

They were connected because they needed each other.

Victoria had access to my home.

Daniel had access to my company.

Together, they could reach everything Elena left behind.

Everything meant for Lily.

That evening, I found Victoria standing outside Lily’s bedroom.

Watching through the slightly open door.

My anger returned instantly.

“What are you doing?””

She turned.

“I was checking on her.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You were checking whether she was scared enough to stay quiet.””

Her face changed.

“You think I’m a monster.””

“I think you’re someone who forgot my daughter is a person.””

Victoria crossed her arms.

“You have no idea what I’ve done for this family.””

I looked at her.

“And you have no idea what Elena knew.””

For the first time, fear appeared in her eyes.

Real fear.

Because she understood.

Elena’s last message.

The lockbox.

The evidence.

Victoria had been searching for one thing.

May you like

But she never realized Elena had left another.

A way for the truth to find me.
