Chapter 7: The Secret Elena Buried
I watched the video until the screen went black.
Then I watched it again.
Not because I didn’t understand what I saw.
Because I couldn’t accept it.
There was a difference.
Understanding something is when your mind receives information.
Accepting something is when your heart finally stops fighting the truth.
And my heart was still fighting.
Daniel’s voice echoed in my head.
“Once Arthur signs the transfer, everything will finally belong to us.””
Us.
That one word carried years of betrayal.
Years of trust.
Years of me defending him when people questioned his intentions.
I thought about every holiday dinner.
Every family meeting.
Every time Daniel hugged Lily and told her she was his little princess.
I wondered how many of those moments were real.
Marcus closed the laptop.
“Arthur.””
I didn’t answer.
“Arthur, we need to think carefully.””
I finally looked at him.
“Think carefully?””
“Yes.””
“My brother and Victoria planned to steal my daughter’s inheritance.””
“I know.””
“They used Elena’s name to do it.””
“I know.””
“Then what exactly am I supposed to think about?””
Marcus stayed quiet.
Because he knew I wasn’t asking him for an answer.
I was asking because anger had nowhere else to go.
I grabbed the flash drive.
“I’m going home.””
“Arthur—”
“I need to talk to them.””
Marcus stood.
“No.””
The firmness in his voice surprised me.
“You don’t confront them yet.””
I stared at him.
“They already know.””
“Maybe.””
“What do you mean maybe?””
Marcus pointed at the storage unit.
“If they knew you found the lockbox, they would already be running.””
That stopped me.
Because he was right.
People who are guilty don’t usually wait around.
Unless they believe they still have control.
“They think I don’t know everything,” I said.
“Exactly.””
Marcus looked at me.
“And that gives us an advantage.””
I hated that he was right.
But I knew Marcus.
He wasn’t trying to stop me because he didn’t care.
He was trying to stop me because he knew exactly what was at stake.
My daughter.
My company.
My entire family.
When I returned home, Victoria was sitting in the kitchen.
She looked up.
And for a second, I saw fear.
Then it disappeared.
She was good.
Very good.
“You were gone early.””
I placed my keys on the counter.
“Couldn’t sleep.””
She nodded.
“Because of all this?””
I looked at her.
“You mean the lies?””
Her face tightened.
“I think you’re making accusations you can’t take back.””
I almost smiled.
Because that sounded like a threat wrapped in concern.
“You know what’s interesting?””
“What?””
“I spent years thinking you were calm because you were mature.””
I stepped closer.
“Now I think you’re calm because you rehearsed everything.””
Victoria’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re angry.””
“Yes.””
“Anger makes people foolish.””
I looked at her.
“Funny.””
“What?””
“That’s exactly what Elena warned me about.””
Her expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“You talked to Elena?””
“No.””
I watched her carefully.
“I listened to her.””
Silence.
A long silence.
And then Victoria said something I didn’t expect.
“She was always suspicious.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What?””
Victoria looked away.
“Elena saw problems everywhere.””
That was it.
The mask slipped.
Not completely.
But enough.
She wasn’t grieving Elena.
She was irritated by her.
“She was your best friend.””
Victoria laughed quietly.
“You really believed that?””
The words hit me.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Elena was not as innocent as you think.””
I stared at her.
“Careful.””
“I’m telling you the truth.””
“No.””
My voice lowered.
“You’re trying to rewrite history.””
Victoria stood.
“You don’t know what happened between us.””
“Then tell me.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because people who have the truth don’t usually need time to invent it.
“I loved Elena,” she finally said.
“Then why did you steal from her daughter?””
Her face changed.
And there it was.
The question she couldn’t answer.
She walked away.
But before she reached the doorway, I said:
“Where is Daniel?””
She stopped.
“Why?””
“Because I know you two were working together.””
Her shoulders went still.
Then she turned.
“You should be careful who you trust, Arthur.””
I nodded.
“I finally learned that lesson.””
That night, Lily found me sitting in Elena’s old reading room.
She climbed into the chair beside me.
“Daddy?””
“Yeah?””
“Are you sad?””
I looked at her.
Kids always know.
Even when adults try to hide everything.
“I miss your mom.””
“Me too.””
She leaned against me.
“She always said you were brave.””
I smiled sadly.
“I don’t feel brave.””
“Why?””
“Because sometimes being brave means admitting you’re scared.””
Lily thought about that.
Then she reached into her pocket.
“I have something.””
She handed me a small folded piece of paper.
“What is this?””
“Mom gave it to me.””
My heart stopped.
“When?””
“Before she went to the hospital.””
I unfolded it carefully.
It was Elena’s handwriting.
But this wasn’t the letter from the lockbox.
This was different.
It said:
Arthur,
If Lily gives you this, it means she remembered something important.
Follow the necklace.
The necklace?
I looked at Lily.
“What necklace?””
She touched the small gold necklace around her neck.
“The one Mom gave me.””
I stared at it.
Elena had given Lily that necklace on her sixth birthday.
I always thought it was just jewelry.
But Elena didn’t do anything without meaning.
I removed it gently.
The back had a tiny hidden compartment.
Inside was a small memory card.
Marcus arrived twenty minutes later.
And when he saw what we found, his face changed.
“What is it?””
I handed it to him.
He connected it.
A video file appeared.
The date was the day before Elena went into the hospital.
My hands went cold.
She had recorded this after creating the lockbox.
After preparing everything.
After knowing something was wrong.
The screen lit up.
Elena appeared.
And this time…
She wasn’t calm.
She looked scared.
“Arthur,” she whispered.
“If you’re watching this, then they found a way to hide the truth.””
Marcus looked at me.
Elena continued.
“I need you to know something.””
She leaned closer to the camera.
“Daniel was never trying to help us.””
I closed my eyes.
Even though I already knew.
Hearing it from Elena made it real.
“He was involved from the beginning.””
The video paused.
Then Elena said the words that changed everything.
“The person who started this betrayal was not Victoria.””
My heartbeat slowed.
Because suddenly, I realized something.
Victoria and Daniel weren’t the beginning.
They were only pieces.
May you like
Elena looked directly into the camera.
“The person you need to find is someone you trusted before anyone else.””
