Chapter 6: The Last Letter
The next morning, Marcus called me before sunrise.
“I found the lockbox.””
I sat up in bed.
“What?””
“We traced the movement from your office.””
My heart started pounding.
“Where is it?””
“Your brother’s storage unit.””
I closed my eyes.
Daniel.
The name still felt wrong in my mind.
Like a word I hadn’t learned how to say.
“Get it.””
“I’m already there.””
“I’m coming.””
When I arrived, Marcus was standing beside his car outside the storage facility.
He looked serious.
That was never a good sign.
“You opened it?””
He shook his head.
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
“Because Elena placed restrictions on it.””
I frowned.
“She did what?””
Marcus handed me a small envelope.
My name was written across the front.
In Elena’s handwriting.
For a moment, the world disappeared.
I touched the letters.
The same handwriting I saw on grocery lists.
Birthday cards.
Notes she left me when she went to bed before me.
My fingers trembled.
“Arthur,” Marcus said quietly, “you don’t have to do this here.””
“Yes, I do.””
Because I had spent two years missing her voice.
And now she was speaking again.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
Arthur,
If you are reading this, then I was right to be cautious.
I hate that.
I hate that I had to prepare for a world where I wasn’t there to protect Lily.
But I need you to understand something.
The people who hurt you the most are often the ones who know exactly where you keep your heart.
I stopped reading.
Because that sentence felt like Elena was sitting beside me.
I continued.
Do not let anger make your decisions. Let truth do that.
The lockbox contains information about Lily’s future, but it also contains information about choices made by people close to us.
Trust actions.
Not promises.
My eyes moved to the final lines.
And Arthur…
Remember this.
Lily does not need a perfect father.
She needs a present one.
I folded the letter.
Because that was Elena’s final lesson for me.
I had spent my whole life building things.
A company.
A reputation.
A fortune.
But the thing that mattered most was the little girl upstairs who needed me.
Not my money.
Not my name.
Me.
Marcus unlocked the storage unit.
Inside was a collection of boxes.
Old files.
Documents.
And finally…
The lockbox.
Small.
Wooden.
Worn from years of being moved.
I picked it up.
It felt heavier than it looked.
Not because of what was inside.
Because of everything it represented.
A promise.
A warning.
A mother trying to protect her daughter after she was gone.
We opened it carefully.
Inside were papers.
A flash drive.
Several handwritten notes.
And a photograph.
I picked up the photograph first.
My blood turned cold.
It was Victoria.
And Daniel.
Together.
But not from recently.
The picture was dated five years earlier.
Before Elena died.
Before I ever suspected anything.
Marcus took the photo.
“Arthur…”
I looked closer.
Behind them was a building.
The Carter Enterprises headquarters.
And they were standing beside another person.
Someone I recognized.
Someone I never expected.
My father’s old business partner.
A man who had disappeared from our lives after a public lawsuit years ago.
“What does this mean?”” Marcus asked.
I didn’t answer.
Because I already knew one thing.
This wasn’t just about Victoria.
It wasn’t just about Daniel.
They were part of something that started years ago.
Something connected to my family.
Something Elena discovered before I did.
Then I picked up the flash drive.
A label was written on it.
Three words.
“Watch the meeting.””
Marcus connected it to his laptop.
A video appeared.
The screen showed a conference room.
The quality was old.
But the voices were clear.
Victoria walked in first.
Then Daniel.
Then the man from the photograph.
They sat together.
And then Daniel spoke.
“Once Arthur signs the transfer, everything will finally belong to us.””
I felt my hands go numb.
Because there was no misunderstanding anymore.
No explanation.
No excuse.
My own brother had planned to take from my daughter.
And Victoria had helped him.
Then the man in the video leaned forward and said something that made my entire body freeze.
“Just make sure Arthur never finds out what Elena discovered.””
The video continued.
But I didn’t hear the rest.
Because one question filled my mind.
May you like
What did Elena discover?
And why was everyone willing to destroy my family to keep it hidden?
