Chapter 3: The Man Who Was Never Supposed To Find Me
My father stared at the name glowing on his phone screen.
General Thomas Hayes.
I had heard that name before.
Not from my father.
From Adrian.
Years ago, during one of our late-night conversations, Adrian had mentioned a military commander who changed his life.
A man who gave him a second chance.
A man who believed people could become better than their worst mistakes.
At the time, I thought it was just another story from Adrian’s past.
I never imagined that name would appear in the middle of my wedding ceremony.
My father’s thumb hovered over the answer button.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The entire chapel waited.
Finally, Marcus Reed answered.
“General Hayes.””
His voice was controlled.
Too controlled.
I knew that voice.
It was the voice my father used when he was afraid but refused to show it.
A few seconds passed.
Then my father’s expression changed.
Not anger.
Not surprise.
Something worse.
Recognition.
“Yes,” he said quietly.
He looked at Adrian.
“I understand.””
Another pause.
“I’ll handle it.””
He ended the call.
I stared at him.
“What did he say?””
My father put the phone away.
“Maya—”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
I stepped closer.
“No more half answers. No more secret looks. No more conversations where everyone knows something except me.””
I pointed toward the folder in his hand.
“That file has my fiancé’s name on it.””
Then I pointed toward Adrian.
“He knows what’s inside.””
Then I looked back at my father.
“And apparently some general knows too.””
My eyes burned.
“So tell me why I’m the only person in this room who doesn’t.””
Nobody answered.
That silence hurt more than any confession could have.
Adrian took a slow breath.
“Maya, I should have told you.””
I turned toward him.
“Yes.””
He looked down.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice became sharper.
“You don’t know what it feels like to stand here and realize the person you planned your entire future with has been carrying a secret since before you even met him.””
His face tightened.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“But you did.””
The words landed between us.
Adrian closed his eyes.
For a second, I saw pain on his face.
Real pain.
And that almost made it worse.
Because if he looked like a liar, I could hate him.
But he looked like someone who had been carrying something heavy for too long.
My father stepped closer.
“Maya, listen to me.””
I looked at him.
“Did you know about him before I met him?””
The question was simple.
But my father hesitated.
That hesitation destroyed something inside me.
“Dad.””
He looked away.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
“You knew.””
His jaw tightened.
“I knew of him.””
I laughed softly.
A broken sound.
“You knew who I was dating?””
“No.””
“But you knew who he was.””
“Yes.””
The room erupted in whispers.
My mother covered her mouth.
I felt dizzy.
“How?””
My father looked at the folder.
“Because Adrian Cole was part of an investigation I was assigned to years ago.””
The words felt unreal.
An investigation.
That was the word people used in movies.
Not for the man standing at your wedding altar.
Not for the person who knew your favorite song, your coffee order, and how you cried when you were overwhelmed.
I looked at Adrian.
“Investigation?””
He swallowed.
“Maya—”
“No.””
I raised my hand.
“Let him answer.””
Adrian nodded slowly.
“I was twenty-six.””
His voice was quiet.
“I wasn’t the person you know now.””
I stared at him.
“Who were you?””
He looked at the floor.
“That’s complicated.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“No.””
Adrian looked at him.
Marcus continued.
“It’s not complicated anymore.””
The two men stared at each other.
And suddenly I understood something.
This wasn’t a father confronting a future son-in-law.
This was two people who had been connected long before me.
“You two knew each other.””
Neither answered.
I felt my heart sinking.
“You knew each other.””
Adrian finally spoke.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before I met you.””
I closed my eyes.
The pain came quickly.
Like a wave.
All the memories I loved suddenly felt different.
Our first date.
Our first apartment.
The night he proposed.
Had any of it been real?
Or was I just a chapter in a story I didn’t know I was part of?
I remembered the night Adrian proposed.
Rain hitting the windows of our small apartment.
A pizza box on the table.
No fancy restaurant.
No expensive decorations.
Just him.
He had held my hand and said:
“Maya, you make me believe I can finally stop running.””
At the time, I thought he meant from his past.
I never knew his past was connected to mine.
My father looked at Adrian.
“You should have walked away.””
Adrian nodded.
“I know.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Adrian looked at me.
And the answer in his eyes terrified me.
“Because by the time I realized who Maya was…”
He stopped.
My chest tightened.
“Who I was?””
Adrian looked at my father.
Marcus didn’t move.
“Who was I?””
Adrian whispered:
“Your daughter.””
The room went completely silent.
I stared at him.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
He looked devastated.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You’re talking like knowing my father somehow changed everything.””
“It did.””
“Why?””
He didn’t answer.
My father did.
“Because Adrian believed I was responsible for something that happened years ago.””
I turned toward him.
“What happened?””
My father’s face became unreadable.
Something old.
Something painful.
Something he had buried.
“An operation.””
The word made Adrian look away.
My father continued.
“An operation where people were hurt.””
My hands went cold.
“And Adrian blamed you?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Adrian.
“Is that true?””
His silence confirmed it.
“You hated my father.””
Adrian’s eyes filled.
“Yes.””
“And then you met me.””
“Yes.””
“And you still stayed?””
His voice broke.
“Yes.””
I couldn’t understand.
“Why?””
He stepped closer.
“Because you weren’t what I expected.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“I expected Colonel Marcus Reed’s daughter to be cold.””
My heart tightened.
“But you weren’t.””
He looked at me.
“You were kind to everyone. You stopped to help strangers. You remembered people’s birthdays. You cared about things nobody else noticed.””
His voice became softer.
“And I hated that.””
I stared at him.
“You hated that I was kind?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I hated that you made it impossible for me to keep hating your father.””
Nobody spoke.
The honesty of it cut deeper than a lie.
My father lowered his eyes.
“Maya, there is something else.””
I looked at him.
“Of course there is.””
The sadness in my own voice surprised me.
My father reached for the folder.
“This file doesn’t just explain Adrian.””
He looked at me.
“It explains why he came into your life.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Adrian immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
My father turned.
“You owe her the truth.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
Not fear this time.
Panic.
“Colonel, please.””
My father ignored him.
I looked between them.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian said something quietly.
Something that made my entire body freeze.
“Maya…”
He swallowed.
“The first time I saw you wasn’t at the coffee shop.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He looked away.
“I saw you months before that.””
My heart started pounding.
“Where?””
His eyes met mine.
And for the first time, I saw how much regret someone could carry.
“Outside the building where my investigation ended.””
I felt the room spinning.
“What building?””
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“The one your father was assigned to protect.””
My father’s hand tightened around the sealed folder.
“Maya, there is a reason Adrian recognized you before you recognized him.””
I looked at the file.
Then at Adrian.
Then at my father.
A horrible thought entered my mind.
A thought I didn’t want to believe.
“Were you watching me?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
My father finally broke the seal.
The sound of tearing paper echoed through the chapel.
Everyone gasped.
The first page slowly slid out.
My father looked down.
And his face changed.
Because whatever was written there…
He had not expected to see it.
He turned the page toward himself.
Then he whispered the words that made Adrian take a step back.
“No…”
My voice shook.
“What does it say?””
My father looked at me.
And for the first time that day…
My father looked afraid of the truth.
“Maya…”
He held up the document.
“This file was never supposed to exist.””
Then his eyes moved to Adrian.
“Because according to this report…”
He stopped.
Adrian’s face went pale.
“According to this report…”
May you like
My father looked back at me.
“Adrian Cole died seven years ago.””
