Chapter 7: The Daughter Inside The File
The chapel doors locked with a heavy click.
A sound that should have made me feel safe.
Instead, it made me feel trapped.
The wedding decorations surrounded us like a cruel joke.
White flowers.
Golden lights.
A perfect aisle.
Everything I had spent months planning.
And now every beautiful detail reminded me of the same thing.
I had walked into this chapel expecting to become a wife.
Instead, I had become evidence.
My father stood near the entrance, scanning every corner.
Not like a father.
Like a soldier.
That terrified me more than anything.
Because Colonel Marcus Reed only appeared when something was dangerous.
And whatever was happening now was dangerous enough to bring him back.
“Maya.””
I looked at Adrian.
He was standing several feet away.
Not approaching.
Not touching me.
Like he understood he no longer had the right.
“What?””
His eyes moved to the phone still in my hand.
“You need to stay close to me.””
A bitter smile crossed my face.
“Do I?””
His expression fell.
“I know what you’re thinking.””
“No, you don’t.””
“I do.””
“You don’t know anything about what I’m thinking.””
I held up the phone.
“You knew someone was watching me.””
“Yes.””
“You knew my father had secrets.””
“Yes.””
“You knew there was danger.””
“Yes.””
“And you still let me plan a wedding without telling me.””
His silence hurt.
Because it was true.
My father walked over.
“Maya.””
I looked at him.
“Did you know someone was watching me too?””
His hesitation was answer enough.
My eyes filled.
“Dad.””
He looked away.
“Maya, I was trying to confirm who it was.””
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“Everyone suspects everything.””
My voice broke.
“But nobody tells me anything.””
My father looked like he wanted to reach for me.
He didn’t.
Maybe he knew he didn’t deserve to.
The officer who had tried to take the file approached Marcus.
“Colonel, we need to move the civilians.””
My father looked at the guests.
My family.
Friends.
People who came to watch me get married.
Now they were witnesses to something much bigger.
“No.””
The officer frowned.
“Sir?””
“They leave through the side entrance.””
“Why?””
My father looked at the message again.
“Because whoever sent this wanted everyone inside this chapel.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Why?””
My father looked at the folder.
“Because they wanted the file opened.””
Daniel Cross laughed quietly.
Everyone turned.
“You still don’t understand.””
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“Understand what?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Maya was never a target.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She was the key.””
The words felt impossible.
My father stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Daniel didn’t look at him.
“Seven years ago, everyone thought Adrian was the important piece.””
He looked at Adrian.
“They were wrong.””
Adrian’s face tightened.
Daniel continued.
“The operation was never about one person.””
My eyes moved to the file.
“It was about information.””
“Yes.””
“What information?””
Daniel looked at me.
“You.””
The entire room went silent.
I shook my head.
“No.””
My father immediately stepped beside me.
“Maya, listen to me.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“No, because I’m tired of hearing everyone say my name like I’m a child.””
My voice trembled.
“I’m not a secret.””
My father’s expression broke.
“I know.””
“Then tell me.””
He took a slow breath.
“Seven years ago, before Adrian disappeared, there was a leak inside the operation.””
I listened.
“Someone was giving information to an outside group.””
“About what?””
“About protected witnesses.””
I looked at Adrian.
“Like him?””
“Yes.””
My father continued.
“But the person responsible wasn’t searching for Adrian.””
“Who were they searching for?””
My father looked at me.
“The person who had seen everything.””
My stomach dropped.
“Me?””
“No.””
The answer came from Adrian.
He stepped closer.
Not too close.
Just enough.
“You didn’t see everything.””
I looked at him.
“Then why am I in the file?””
He swallowed.
“Because you were there.””
“Where?””
“The night I disappeared.””
My heart raced.
“I don’t remember that.””
“I know.””
“What does that mean?””
Adrian looked at my father.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Then he said:
“You were twenty years old.””
I stared at him.
“That was seven years ago.””
“Yes.””
“I was in college.””
“Yes.””
“I don’t remember any operation.””
“You weren’t supposed to.””
The words made me angry.
“You’re saying I was involved in something and I forgot?””
My father looked at me.
“I’m saying something happened to you.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
My mother gasped softly.
“Maya…”
I turned toward her.
“Mom?””
She looked terrified.
Not confused.
Terrified.
“You knew too?””
Her face crumbled.
“I knew something happened.””
My chest tightened.
“You too?””
She started crying.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I stepped back.
Everyone.
Everyone had decided my life was something they could manage.
Something they could control.
Something they could hide.
“I hate that sentence.””
My father looked at me.
“What?””
“I hate hearing that you protected me.””
Tears fell down my face.
“Because while all of you were protecting me from the truth…”
I looked around the chapel.
“I was living inside a lie.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian quietly said:
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“Did you know I lost my memory?””
His face changed.
That was all I needed.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“When did you find out?””
“When I started investigating your father.””
I felt sick.
“So our first conversation…”
He nodded.
“I already knew something was wrong.””
“Our first date.””
“Yes.””
“Our entire relationship.””
“Maya…”
“Was I just part of your investigation?””
“No.””
His answer came immediately.
“No.””
“Then what was I?””
He looked at me.
And for the first time, he stopped hiding.
“You were the reason I stopped.””
The honesty in his voice almost broke me.
“I spent years believing everyone was lying.””
He stepped closer.
“Then I met you.””
His voice softened.
“You didn’t care about my past. You didn’t care about my mistakes. You didn’t know anything about the person I used to be.””
A tear fell from his eye.
“You just saw me.””
I looked away.
Because I wanted to believe him.
But trust was something I didn’t have anymore.
Daniel suddenly spoke.
“Beautiful.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?”” my father asked.
Daniel smiled.
“The problem with secrets is that eventually people start believing they’re protecting someone.””
He walked toward the table where the file rested.
“But really…”
He touched the folder.
“They’re protecting themselves.””
My father moved.
“Don’t.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Still afraid of what’s inside?””
Marcus said nothing.
Daniel looked at me.
“Do you want to know what your father removed from this file?””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
My father’s expression changed.
Daniel smiled.
“The page that explains why you survived.””
Nobody moved.
My voice barely came out.
“Survived what?””
Daniel looked at Adrian.
“Tell her.””
Adrian stared at him.
“No.””
Daniel laughed.
“Still protecting her.””
My father grabbed Daniel’s arm.
“Enough.””
Daniel pulled away.
“You should have told her seven years ago.””
The chapel lights suddenly flickered.
Everyone looked up.
The warm golden lights went out for three seconds.
When they returned, the room was different.
Because the folder was gone.
My father immediately turned.
“What?””
The table was empty.
The restricted military file had disappeared.
The room exploded into panic.
The officers searched.
Guests screamed.
My father looked around with horror.
Not because the file was stolen.
Because he knew exactly what it meant.
I looked at him.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
“Dad, where is it?””
His face turned pale.
Then he looked directly at me.
“Maya…”
“What?””
His voice dropped.
“They didn’t steal the file.””
I stared at him.
“Then what happened?””
My father looked toward the chapel doors.
May you like
And whispered:
“They took the only copy that proves you were there that night.””
