Chapter 5: The Witness Who Walked Into My Wedding

The stranger’s voice cut through the chapel like a blade.

“Colonel Reed, you were ordered to destroy that document seven years ago.””

Nobody moved.

Not even my father.

For the first time that day, Colonel Marcus Reed looked like he wasn’t in control.

Not because he was afraid of the stranger.

Because he knew him.

I saw it immediately.

The way my father’s shoulders tightened.

The way his eyes narrowed.

The way his hand moved slightly toward the folder.

He recognized him.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

The man ignored me.

His eyes remained on my father.

“Seven years, Marcus.””

My father’s voice was low.

“Don’t call me that.””

A strange smile crossed the man’s face.

“Still pretending you’re above it all?””

My mother stepped closer to me.

“Maya, stay behind me.””

I almost laughed.

My mother was barely taller than my shoulder, but she moved in front of me like she could protect me from whatever nightmare had entered my wedding.

The man finally looked at me.

His expression changed.

Not softer.

More curious.

“So this is Maya.””

My stomach tightened.

“How do you know my name?””

He looked back at my father.

“You never told her?””

My father’s voice became dangerous.

“Leave.””

The stranger chuckled.

“After everything, that’s what you say?””

“Leave this chapel.””

“You don’t get to give orders anymore.””

The guests began whispering again.

The wedding coordinator looked toward the exit.

Several people were already standing, unsure whether to run or stay.

I looked at my father.

“Dad.””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

Because my father always answered.

Even when the answer was painful.

Even when the truth was ugly.

But now he was silent.

“Who is he?””

My father looked at me.

“Maya, you need to trust me.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know if I can.””

The words hurt him.

I saw that.

But I couldn’t take them back.

Not anymore.

The stranger stepped closer.

“My name is Daniel Cross.””

Adrian’s face changed.

A small movement.

A flicker.

But I saw it.

“You know him,” I said.

Adrian looked at me.

“Maya…”

“You know him too.””

Daniel smiled.

“He knows exactly who I am.””

Adrian’s voice became cold.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

That was the first time I heard anger from him.

Not fear.

Not regret.

Anger.

Daniel looked amused.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“You spent seven years hiding.””

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“And now you’re protecting her.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“Don’t talk about her.””

My heart tightened.

Because for one second, I saw the Adrian I knew.

The man who stood between me and anything that hurt me.

But now I wondered.

Was that instinct real?

Or was protecting me just another part of his mission?

Daniel looked at my father.

“You never told her what happened that night.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

Daniel spread his hands.

“Because your daughter deserves the truth.””

My father moved toward him.

“Careful.””

Daniel didn’t move.

“Still threatening people when you’re scared?””

The room went silent.

I looked between them.

“What happened that night?””

Nobody answered.

I raised my voice.

“What happened?””

My father closed his eyes.

And for a moment, he looked tired.

Not like a soldier.

Like a father.

“I was assigned to protect a witness.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“A witness?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

My father looked at him.

“Don’t.””

But Daniel continued.

“The witness was someone who knew about a classified operation.””

My eyes moved toward Adrian.

The connection formed slowly.

“No.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Adrian.

“Was it you?””

Adrian looked away.

That was all I needed.

“You were the witness.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

The room spun.

My father’s voice was quiet.

“Adrian had information that could expose people who were willing to do anything to stay hidden.””

“And you protected him?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did everyone think he was dead?””

My father looked at the folder.

“Because that was the only way to keep him alive.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Almost.””

Everyone looked at him.

He stepped closer.

“Almost kept him alive.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know what happened after.””

“I know exactly what happened.””

Daniel reached inside his coat.

Several guests gasped.

My father immediately moved.

“Don’t.””

But Daniel only pulled out a small envelope.

He held it between two fingers.

“Relax.””

He looked at me.

“This isn’t a weapon.””

He walked toward the nearest table and placed it down.

“It’s proof.””

My eyes stayed on the envelope.

Proof of what?

The entire day felt like a series of locked doors.

Every time one opened, there was another behind it.

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“You should tell her.””

Adrian’s face was exhausted.

“I tried.””

“No, you avoided.””

Adrian’s hands curled into fists.

“I was trying to protect her.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You were trying to protect yourself.””

That hit harder than I expected.

Because some part of me feared it was true.

I looked at Adrian.

“Were you?””

He looked at me.

“Maya, I never used you.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

His face fell.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing you.””

I swallowed.

“You should have been afraid of me finding out.””

He looked down.

“I was.””

Silence.

My father walked toward the envelope.

Daniel stopped him.

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“This is my daughter.””

“And that’s why she deserves to open it.””

My father stared at the envelope.

I had never seen him hesitate like that.

“What is inside?””

Daniel smiled.

“The answer to the question you’ve been avoiding for seven years.””

I stepped forward.

“Which question?””

Daniel looked at me.

“The question of why your father disappeared the night Adrian Cole died.””

The words froze me.

My father disappeared.

Not was deployed.

Not went on assignment.

Disappeared.

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He looked away.

My heart sank.

“You told me you were stationed overseas.””

He didn’t answer.

“You told me you couldn’t come home because of your work.””

His eyes closed.

“Maya…”

“You lied to me.””

It was the quietest thing I said all day.

And somehow the most painful.

My father looked like I had physically struck him.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice trembled.

“Protect me from what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian walked toward me.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like I was something fragile.

“Maya.””

I looked at him.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“I know you’re angry.””

“I’m not just angry.””

My voice broke.

“I don’t know what’s real anymore.””

His eyes filled.

“Everything between us was real.””

“Was it?””

“Yes.””

“Even when you knew who my father was?””

“Yes.””

“Even when you knew why he was investigating you?””

“Yes.””

“Even when you knew I was connected to the same thing you were running from?””

Adrian went still.

I noticed.

My heart dropped.

“Connected how?””

Again.

Silence.

Again.

A secret.

I stepped back.

“What did my father do?””

My father looked at me.

“Maya…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t protect me.””

The chapel doors suddenly opened again.

This time, two uniformed officers entered.

My father immediately recognized them.

His face changed.

Daniel smiled.

“Looks like we’re out of time.””

One officer approached.

“Colonel Reed.””

My father stood straighter.

“Yes?””

The officer held out a document.

“By order of military command, you are required to surrender the restricted file immediately.””

Everyone froze.

My father looked at the paper.

Then at me.

Then at Adrian.

The officer extended his hand.

“Colonel.””

My father tightened his grip around the folder.

He had a choice.

Follow the order.

Or finally tell me the truth.

Slowly, my father placed the folder behind him.

And said:

“No.””

The officer’s expression changed.

“Sir?””

My father looked directly at me.

For the first time all day, he made a decision.

Not as a soldier.

As my father.

“No one is taking this file.””

The officer stepped forward.

“Colonel Reed, you understand the consequences.””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

He looked at Adrian.

Then at me.

“I do.””

And then he said the words that made everyone in the chapel freeze:

“Because this file doesn’t contain Adrian’s secret.””

May you like

He looked at me.

“It contains mine.””
