Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Hartwell Family

The name on the document was one I had spent months trying to uncover.

And now it was sitting in the middle of a ballroom filled with three hundred witnesses.

*Richard Hartwell.*

Julian’s father.

The man who had built the Hartwell empire before passing control to his son.

The man everyone believed had retired quietly.

The man who was supposed to be living on a private island in the Caribbean.

Julian stared at the page.

His face had lost all color.

“No,” he whispered.

The agent beside him watched carefully.

“Mr. Hartwell, we verified the records.””

Julian shook his head.

“My father would never…”

He stopped.

Because even before he finished the sentence, he knew something.

Something he didn’t want to admit.

His father had done things before that nobody knew about.

I had discovered the first clue six months earlier.

The day I entered the Hartwell estate.

I wasn’t there to clean rooms.

I wasn’t there to serve dinner.

I was there because someone had tried to silence a twelve-year-old girl.

Julian’s daughter, Lily.

A month before I arrived, Lily had witnessed something she wasn’t supposed to see.

A conversation between Camilla and a man outside the estate.

A conversation about money.

About documents.

About Julian’s company.

After that night, Lily started receiving anonymous messages.

Then came the threats.

Julian hired security.

But the threats continued.

That was when I was brought in.

Not as a bodyguard.

Not as an investigator.

As someone nobody would notice.

A housekeeper.

Because powerful people rarely watch the people carrying their coffee.

They watch the people standing in expensive suits.

They watch the guards.

They watch the cameras.

They never watch the woman quietly cleaning the windows.

Until she sees everything.

The ballroom remained frozen.

Camilla looked at Julian.

“Julian, you can’t seriously believe this.””

He didn’t answer.

That frightened her more than anger would have.

“Say something,” she demanded.

Julian slowly looked at her.

“Why is my father’s name connected to you?””

Camilla opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then she recovered.

“You’re letting a stranger manipulate you.””

A stranger.

I almost laughed.

Because for months, I had been closer to Julian’s family than Camilla ever realized.

I had seen the photos on Lily’s bedside table.

I had heard Julian’s late-night conversations when he thought nobody was listening.

I had watched him sit alone in the kitchen after his daughter fell asleep, wondering how to protect her from enemies he couldn’t identify.

I knew the Hartwell family better than the woman who wore their diamonds.

The agent handed Julian another folder.

“There’s more.””

Camilla immediately stepped forward.

“Enough.””

The agent looked at her.

“Ms. Vale, you’re not in a position to decide that.””

Her eyes hardened.

For a moment, the elegant mask disappeared.

And everyone saw the real woman underneath.

Not the charming girlfriend.

Not the socialite.

Someone desperate.

Julian noticed.

“Ava.””

I looked at him.

“Yes?””

“How long have you known?””

The question wasn’t angry.

It was hurt.

I understood why.

He believed I had deceived him.

And technically, he was right.

“I knew there was a threat,” I said.

“From my father?””

“I didn’t know at first.””

Julian looked away.

The music had stopped completely.

All the guests were watching.

I lowered my voice.

“Mr. Hartwell, if I had told you everything immediately, Camilla would have disappeared.””

His eyes returned to mine.

“You think she would run?””

“I know she would.””

“How?””

I looked toward Camilla.

“Because the first time I met her, she already knew who I was.””

Camilla’s expression changed.

“That’s a lie.””

“No.””

I reached into the pocket of my uniform and removed a small envelope.

The room became silent again.

I walked toward Julian and handed it to him.

“This was delivered to my room three days after I started working at your house.””

Julian opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

His eyes narrowed.

The picture showed me leaving a training facility.

A place I had attended years before.

On the back was a handwritten note.

*We know what you are. Leave before you regret it.*

Julian looked up.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I needed to know who sent it.””

“And?””

I looked at Camilla.

“And I found out.””

Camilla’s voice became sharp.

“You think you’re clever?””

Everyone turned.

She laughed.

But there was no confidence left.

“You’ve been pretending to be some kind of hero while sneaking around my life?””

I faced her.

“I watched you.””

Her smile faded.

“I watched you enter Julian’s office after midnight when he wasn’t home.””

A murmur moved through the crowd.

“I watched you photograph financial documents.””

Camilla’s face tightened.

“I watched you meet with someone in the city three times.””

Julian looked at her.

“Who?””

Camilla said nothing.

I continued.

“And I watched you delete security footage every time you returned.””

The agent stepped forward.

“We recovered those files.””

Camilla’s eyes flashed.

“You were spying on me?””

“No,” I said.

“I was protecting Lily.””

That changed everything.

Julian immediately looked toward the exit.

“Where is my daughter?””

His voice was different.

No billionaire.

No businessman.

Just a father.

One of the security staff hurried forward.

“She’s upstairs with her nanny, sir.””

Julian released a breath.

Then he turned back.

“Why would my father want to hurt Lily?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question nobody wanted to face.

I looked at the folder in Julian’s hand.

“Because Lily saw something.””

Julian frowned.

“What?””

“A few months ago, she saw Camilla meeting someone outside the estate.””

Camilla shook her head.

“She’s a child.””

“She’s also observant.””

Julian looked at me.

“What did she see?””

I remembered the conversation Lily told me.

The fear in her small voice.

The way she held onto her stuffed rabbit while whispering the words.

“I saw Grandma’s friend give Camilla a box.””

Julian froze.

“Grandma?””

His mother.

A woman who had died four years earlier.

“That’s impossible.””

I nodded.

“That’s what I thought.””

The agent opened another file.

“Mr. Hartwell, there’s something else.””

He removed several documents.

“Your mother’s death certificate was altered.””

The room went quiet.

Julian stared.

“What?””

“The original report listed an accident. But the hospital records show inconsistencies.””

Camilla took another step backward.

Nobody noticed except me.

I noticed everything.

The slight movement.

The fear.

The calculation.

She was looking for an exit.

I moved closer to the agent.

“She knows.””

Julian looked at me.

“Knows what?””

“She knows something about your mother’s death.””

Camilla suddenly turned.

“You don’t know anything about my family.””

“No,” I said.

“But you do.””

Her face went pale.

Then, without warning, the ballroom doors opened.

A man walked inside.

Older.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

Everyone recognized him immediately.

Richard Hartwell.

Alive.

The room erupted.

Julian stared at his father.

The agent reached for his weapon.

And Camilla smiled.

Not because she was safe.

Because she had been waiting for him.

Richard looked around the ballroom.

His eyes landed on me.

Then he spoke the words that made Julian’s blood run cold.

“Ava Morgan.””

My body went still.

Because nobody had called me by my real name inside the Hartwell house.

Nobody except the person who had been watching me from the very beginning.

Richard smiled.

“You finally found the truth.””

Julian stepped between us.

“What are you doing here?””

Richard ignored him.

He kept looking at me.

“You were never investigating Camilla.””

I said nothing.

Richard’s smile widened.

“You were investigating me.””

May you like

And then he said something that changed everything.

“Tell Julian who you really work for.””
