Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Nobody moved.
Not even Richard.
The phone continued ringing inside his jacket.
A sound so ordinary.
So harmless.
Yet every person in that ballroom understood that it had just changed the entire story.
Thomas Morgan.
My father.
The man everyone said was dead.
The man whose name I had not heard spoken in six years.
Richard stared at the screen.
His hand hovered above the phone.
For the first time since I met him, the powerful billionaire looked afraid.
“Answer it,” I said.
My voice didn’t sound like mine.
Richard looked at me.
“No.””
One word.
A confession disguised as a refusal.
Julian noticed.
His face hardened.
“Why wouldn’t you answer a call from a dead man?””
Richard said nothing.
The agents moved closer.
“Mr. Hartwell,” one of them said, “we suggest you hand over the phone.””
Richard ignored him.
His eyes stayed on me.
“You don’t understand what you’re asking for.””
I stepped forward.
“My entire life, I was told my father was gone.””
A pause.
“You let me believe that.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“You think knowing the truth would have saved you?””
“No.””
I looked at the phone.
“But hearing your voice tell me the truth might have.””
The ringing stopped.
Everyone exhaled.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then the phone rang again.
Richard looked down.
This time, the screen displayed a message.
One sentence.
*You owe her the truth.*
Richard’s face went pale.
Julian saw it.
“What did he send?””
Richard quickly locked the screen.
Too late.
Everyone had seen enough.
Camilla looked suddenly nervous.
“Richard…”
He ignored her.
That was when I realized something.
Camilla was not his partner.
She was afraid of him too.
My mother stepped closer to me.
“Ava, please.””
I turned.
“Please what?””
Her expression broke.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“By letting me believe you were dead?””
“I thought it was the only way.””
I laughed softly.
But there was no humor in it.
“The only way for who?””
My mother looked down.
And that hurt more than any answer.
Julian watched the two of us.
He seemed lost.
His entire family history was collapsing in front of him.
“My father hid your father.””
My mother nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at Richard.
“Because Thomas discovered the truth about the company.””
Julian looked at the documents on the table.
“The financial fraud.””
“Yes.””
“And my grandmother?””
My mother’s face changed.
“She tried to help us.””
Richard finally spoke.
“Enough.””
Everyone turned.
His calm was gone.
“You have no idea what happened.””
Julian stared at him.
“Then explain.””
Richard looked at his son.
For a second, I saw something complicated in his eyes.
Not guilt.
Not exactly.
Regret.
But it disappeared quickly.
“Your grandmother was weak.””
The room became still.
Julian’s expression changed.
“She trusted the wrong people.””
“No,” my mother said.
“She trusted you.””
Richard looked at her.
“And you betrayed me.””
The words landed.
I felt my stomach tighten.
My mother didn’t deny it.
Julian noticed.
“You did.””
She looked at him.
“I made a choice.””
“What choice?””
She swallowed.
“The wrong one.””
Richard smiled slightly.
“There it is.””
My mother looked at me.
“I was working with Thomas to expose Richard.””
I listened carefully.
Because I had spent years searching for answers.
Now I finally had them.
“Your father found evidence that Richard had been moving money from Hartwell companies into private accounts.””
She looked at Julian.
“But before we could release it, Richard found out.””
“What happened?””
My mother’s eyes filled with pain.
“He took Thomas.””
The room went quiet.
“He told me if I went to the police, Thomas would disappear forever.””
I whispered.
“So you made a deal.””
She nodded.
“I gave him the evidence.””
Julian looked shocked.
“You helped him destroy the investigation?””
“Yes.””
Her voice broke.
“Because I thought I was saving your father.””
I stared at her.
“But he still disappeared.””
“Yes.””
The answer was barely audible.
“Because Richard lied.””
Richard’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
My mother continued.
“He never planned to release Thomas.””
She looked at me.
“He planned to erase everyone who knew the truth.””
A silence followed.
Then Julian asked the question that had been waiting.
“How did your mother survive?””
Everyone looked at me.
I didn’t know.
Not until that moment.
My mother looked toward the ballroom doors.
“He escaped.””
The words were simple.
But they carried years of pain.
“Thomas escaped from Richard.””
Richard’s voice became cold.
“He was never supposed to.””
Everyone turned.
The admission shocked even Camilla.
Julian stared at his father.
“You knew?””
Richard didn’t answer.
That was enough.
The agent stepped forward.
“Mr. Hartwell, you need to understand your current situation.””
Richard laughed quietly.
“My situation?””
He looked around.
“At this moment, you think you have won because you found some old documents.””
He looked at me.
“You think Ava Morgan uncovered everything.””
Then he smiled.
“But she doesn’t know the final piece.””
My mother froze.
I noticed.
“What final piece?””
Richard looked at her.
“You never told her.””
My mother’s face turned pale.
“What?””
Richard took a step closer.
“The reason Thomas disappeared.””
My heart started beating faster.
“No.””
My mother whispered the word.
Richard continued.
“He wasn’t taken because he found the evidence.””
Julian frowned.
“Then why?””
Richard looked directly at me.
“He disappeared because he found out who his daughter really was.””
The entire ballroom went silent.
I felt cold.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard smiled.
“Ask your mother.””
I looked at Elena.
“Mom?””
She didn’t answer.
And that was when I knew.
There was another secret.
A bigger one.
My whole life had been built on missing pieces.
But now I was standing in the center of the puzzle.
Waiting for someone to finally tell me what I was.
My mother stepped toward me.
“Ava…”
Her voice shook.
“There is something I should have told you a long time ago.””
I waited.
Richard watched.
Camilla watched.
Julian watched.
Everyone waited.
My mother reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
The paper looked ancient.
Like it had been opened and closed hundreds of times.
She handed it to me.
“I kept this because I was afraid of what would happen if you knew.””
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a birth record.
A document.
A name.
A name I had never seen before.
My eyes moved across the page.
And my entire world stopped.
Because beneath my name was a line that changed everything.
*Father: Thomas Morgan.*
*Mother: Elena Morgan.*
And below that—
*Biological guardian: Richard Hartwell.*
I looked up.
“What does this mean?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Richard said quietly:
“It means your father wasn’t investigating the Hartwell family.””
He looked at me.
“He was investigating why you were connected to it.””
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“No.””
My mother stepped closer.
“Ava, listen to me.””
But I couldn’t.
Because in that moment, I understood one terrifying thing.
I had entered the Hartwell house believing I was searching for answers.
I thought I was protecting Julian’s daughter.
I thought I was uncovering a crime.
But the truth was much worse.
The secret hidden inside the Hartwell family…
was me.
Suddenly, every light in the ballroom went out.
Guests screamed.
Glass shattered.
A gunshot echoed through the darkness.
And when the emergency lights flickered back on—
Richard Hartwell was gone.
And lying on the floor beside me was the envelope containing the truth about my birth.
