Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Mission

The ballroom had never felt so small.

Three hundred guests.

Three hundred witnesses.

Yet somehow, when Richard Hartwell spoke those words, it felt like the entire world had disappeared.

“Tell Julian who you really work for.””

Every eye turned toward me.

Julian stood between his father and me, his expression unreadable.

But I knew what he was feeling.

Betrayal.

Confusion.

Anger.

The kind of anger that comes when someone you trusted might have been lying from the beginning.

Richard enjoyed the silence.

That was the kind of man he was.

A man who didn’t need to raise his voice because he knew everyone was already listening.

“I’m waiting,” he said.

I looked at Julian.

Then at Richard.

Then at the agents.

The truth had been hidden for too long.

But revealing it here would change everything.

“My employer isn’t a person,” I said.

Richard’s smile faded slightly.

That was the first sign I had surprised him.

I continued.

“I work for an organization that investigates corporate threats, financial crimes, and security breaches involving high-profile individuals.””

Julian’s eyes narrowed.

“Then why hide it?””

“Because I wasn’t assigned to protect you.””

A pause.

“I was assigned to find out who was targeting your daughter.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Julian looked away for a moment.

“Lily.””

I nodded.

“When the threats started, your security team looked for someone trying to get into the estate.””

I glanced around the ballroom.

“They searched for an outsider.””

My eyes returned to him.

“But the person threatening Lily was already inside.””

Richard chuckled.

A quiet, cold sound.

“You always were good at making people believe you were the smartest person in the room.””

I looked at him.

“No. I’m just good at noticing what people try to hide.””

His jaw tightened.

For the first time, Richard looked irritated.

Not angry.

Worried.

And that confirmed what I suspected.

He knew more than he admitted.

Julian noticed the change in his father’s expression.

“Why are you afraid of her?””

Richard looked at his son.

“I’m not.””

“Then why did you know her real name?””

The room became silent again.

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

That was unusual.

A man like him always had an answer.

Unless he was searching for one.

Finally, he smiled.

“Because I did my research.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Richard looked at me.

“You knew who I was before I entered this house.””

His eyes hardened.

“And you knew what I was investigating.””

A few guests whispered.

Julian looked between us.

“Someone explain what is happening.””

I took a breath.

Six months of pretending.

Six months of listening.

Six months of collecting pieces.

Now the puzzle was finally forming.

“Your father wasn’t supposed to be involved.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“Careful.””

“You wanted Julian to believe the threats were coming from outside the company.””

I stepped closer.

“But the money trail led back to someone connected to the Hartwell family.””

Julian looked at Richard.

“Dad?””

Richard didn’t respond.

Instead, he looked at Camilla.

That was when I saw it.

A silent conversation between them.

A glance.

A warning.

Camilla understood immediately.

She moved toward the door.

I stepped in front of her.

“Leaving already?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Move.””

“No.””

“You don’t understand who you’re dealing with.””

I almost smiled.

“That’s exactly what you told me tonight.””

Her expression turned bitter.

“You think wearing a uniform made you invisible?””

“No.””

I looked at the crowd.

“I think people like you make the mistake of ignoring anyone who doesn’t look important.””

Camilla lowered her voice.

“You have no idea what’s coming.””

“Actually, I do.””

That stopped her.

Because I knew.

I knew the kind of people who used fear as a weapon.

The kind of people who believed everyone had a price.

And I knew Camilla wasn’t the person in control.

She was just a piece on the board.

Richard stepped forward.

“Enough.””

His voice carried through the room.

Everyone listened.

Even the agents.

That was power.

Real power.

Not money.

Not fame.

Control.

“Ava Morgan,” Richard said.

“You came into my family’s home pretending to be harmless.””

I held his gaze.

“And you spent years pretending to be a loving father.””

The room reacted instantly.

Julian looked at me.

“What does that mean?””

Richard’s face hardened.

“You should be careful with your accusations.””

“I’m not accusing you.””

I reached into my pocket and removed a small drive.

“I’m showing evidence.””

The agent beside me took it.

Richard’s expression changed.

“What is that?””

“Everything you tried to erase.””

The agent connected it to a nearby laptop.

A screen appeared.

Documents.

Transactions.

Emails.

Photos.

The first image showed a meeting.

Richard.

Camilla.

And another man I recognized.

Julian saw the image.

His face changed.

“No…”

The man beside Richard was his company’s chief financial officer.

A person Julian trusted for years.

The agent explained.

“Over eighteen months, money was transferred through several shell companies. The final destination was an account controlled by a private investment group.””

Julian stared at the screen.

“And who owns it?””

The agent hesitated.

Then answered.

“Richard Hartwell.””

Nobody spoke.

Richard looked at his son.

“You don’t understand.””

Julian laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I understand perfectly.””

Richard stepped forward.

“This company exists because of me.””

Julian’s expression hardened.

“And I spent my life trying to prove I wasn’t just your son.””

Richard’s voice became colder.

“Everything you have came from me.””

Julian looked at him.

“Maybe.””

A pause.

“But everything I became was despite you.””

The words landed harder than any accusation.

Richard looked away.

For a moment, he looked old.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a man watching his control disappear.

Then Camilla spoke.

“You’re all making a mistake.””

Everyone turned.

She smiled.

But this time, it wasn’t charming.

It was dangerous.

“You think Richard is the problem?””

She looked at Julian.

“You really believe your father is the biggest secret in this family?””

Julian frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Camilla slowly reached into her purse.

The agents immediately moved.

“Don’t.””

She stopped.

Then she laughed.

“You’re all so focused on what Richard did.””

Her eyes moved toward me.

“You never asked why Ava was chosen for this mission.””

My stomach tightened.

Because I knew exactly where she was going.

Camilla looked at Julian.

“She didn’t just come here to protect your daughter.””

Julian looked at me.

“Is that true?””

I stayed silent.

And my silence answered him.

Camilla smiled.

“I found her file.””

Julian’s expression changed.

“What file?””

“The one about her past.””

The room went quiet.

Camilla took one step closer.

“She’s not just a security specialist.””

She looked directly at me.

“She’s connected to the woman your family destroyed.””

Julian stared.

“What woman?””

Richard suddenly spoke.

“Camilla.””

But it was too late.

She had already said enough.

Julian looked at me.

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Ava…”

I felt every eye in the room.

Every question.

Every suspicion.

I had prepared for this moment.

But I never expected it to happen in front of everyone.

Camilla smiled.

“Tell him.””

I said nothing.

“Tell him who your mother was.””

Julian froze.

Because he understood.

Richard understood.

And from the look on their faces—

they had been hiding that name for years.

Camilla leaned closer.

“Tell Julian why you really came to the Hartwell estate.””

The ballroom doors suddenly slammed open.

A young girl’s voice came from the entrance.

“Because her mother was my grandmother’s best friend.””

Everyone turned.

Lily Hartwell stood there.

Holding an old photograph.

May you like

And behind her was the one person I never expected to see.

My mother.
