Chapter 12: My Father's Final Warning

I opened the envelope with shaking hands.

Inside was a handwritten letter and a small USB drive.

The letter was dated four months before my father died.

Marcus,

I hope you never have to read this.

If you are reading it, Vanessa has probably discovered the trust and is attempting to gain control of the children's inheritance.

There is something I should have told you before I died.

I stopped.

Richard sat silently across from me.

I continued.

I knew Vanessa before she met you.

My stomach tightened.

She was working for Cole Medical Holdings when the hospital incident occurred. She was not involved in the delivery itself, but she had access to administrative records and confidential correspondence.

After the settlement, she became interested in the Hale family.

I read the sentence again.

Then I looked up.

“Did my father know she married me for money?””

Richard didn't answer immediately.

“He suspected she had a financial motive.””

I returned to the letter.

I warned her to stay away from you. She told me she had no interest in my business or inheritance.

I didn't believe her.

The next paragraph was worse.

Several months after your wedding, Vanessa approached me with a proposal. She wanted me to place her daughter, Lily, under a separate financial arrangement.

I frowned.

Why would Vanessa have wanted a separate arrangement for Lily?

I kept reading.

She told me Lily's biological father had abandoned them. She wanted financial security for her daughter. I refused to create a private arrangement that would disadvantage Noah.

She became angry.

She said Noah had no right to receive anything from my estate because he wasn't my biological grandson.

I stopped reading.

My hands were trembling.

I looked at Richard.

“Did my father know Noah wasn't biologically related to me?””

Richard shook his head.

“According to this letter, he didn't believe that was established.””

I continued.

I told Vanessa that Noah was my grandson in every way that mattered. She responded by saying that blood would eventually decide everything.

I should have taken her words more seriously.

I reached the final page.

Marcus, the USB contains a recording of a conversation I had with Vanessa.

She believed I was recording a business meeting. I allowed her to think that.

Listen carefully.

There is one more thing you need to understand.

Vanessa did not marry you because she loved the children.

She married you because she believed the children would eventually inherit what belonged to their families.

I felt sick.

I looked at Richard.

“Can you play this?””

He nodded.

He inserted the USB into his computer.

A single audio file appeared.

The date was four years earlier.

I pressed play.

My father's voice came through the speakers.

“Vanessa, I don't understand why you're bringing this up again.””

Then Vanessa.

“Because you keep pretending the arrangement is fair.””

My father sighed.

“Both children will be protected.””

“Noah isn't yours.””

“He is my grandson.””

“Not by blood.””

There was a brief silence.

Then my father spoke.

“Blood doesn't give you permission to steal from a child.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You're making a mistake, Robert.””

“I've made plenty of mistakes. Protecting those children won't be one of them.””

Then Vanessa said something that made me grip the desk.

“You don't understand what Ethan knows.””

My father's voice became sharper.

“Leave Ethan out of this.””

“You can't keep him quiet forever.””

“Neither can you.””

The recording continued.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“When Marcus finds out what happened at the hospital, he'll have to choose.””

“Choose what?””

“His real family.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“His real family is standing in front of him.””

Then came a sentence that made the room go silent.

Vanessa said:

“Not for long.””

The recording ended.

I stared at the computer.

Richard removed the USB.

“Mr. Hale, I think this is enough to establish why your father wanted the trust protected.””

I couldn't speak.

My father had seen Vanessa's intentions years before I had.

He had tried to warn me.

And I had ignored every warning because I was too busy building what I believed was a happy family.

I stood.

“I'm going home.””

Richard nodded.

“I'll contact the appropriate authorities and provide them with the trust documents and recording.””

Before I left, he handed me a copy of the letter.

“Marcus, one more thing.””

I turned.

“The trust contains a provision requiring the children to be informed of any attempt to change their inheritance once they reach a certain age. But your father also included a protective clause allowing immediate intervention if someone tries to remove or intimidate either child.””

I looked at him.

“Can we use that now?””

“Yes. I intend to initiate the protective procedure immediately.””

For the first time in days, I felt that someone was finally helping me protect my children.

When I arrived home, my mother was waiting outside.

She looked exhausted.

“Marcus, we need to talk.””

I unlocked the door.

“Come inside.””

She shook her head.

“Not here.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

She glanced toward the street.

“Because Vanessa knows I was the one who kept the hospital records.””

I stared at her.

“What records?””

She reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.

It was old, yellowed, and carefully sealed.

“I kept this for fourteen years.””

My chest tightened.

“Mom, what is it?””

She looked toward the house.

Then she whispered:

“It's the original hospital identification report.””

I stared at the envelope.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Your father made me promise.””

“Dad is dead.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you still protecting him?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Because I was there when he made the decision.””

“What decision?””

She took a trembling breath.

“After the hospital discovered the identification error, they offered to correct the records immediately. But your father asked them to wait.””

I felt my heart pounding.

“Why?””

“Because the other family was threatening to take legal action. Your father believed that if the hospital corrected everything publicly, both families would be destroyed.””

I stared at her.

“Did they switch the babies?””

“No.””

“Then what happened?””

My mother lowered her head.

“The hospital discovered that two babies had been given incorrect identification bands. They corrected the mistake before discharge.””

I felt a strange mixture of relief and anger.

“Then why all the secrecy?””

“Because the other family had already been told that their child was dead.””

I froze.

“What?””

My mother began crying.

“The other mother gave birth to a baby boy who died shortly after delivery. At least, that's what she was told. But the child she eventually took home was the baby Rebecca had delivered.””

I couldn't move.

My mother continued.

“Your father knew the truth. He knew the hospital had made a terrible mistake. He helped arrange the settlement because the other family threatened to expose everything.””

I looked at the envelope.

“And Noah?””

“He was always your biological son, Marcus.””

I closed my eyes.

For a brief moment, I felt as though I could finally breathe.

Then my mother said something else.

“But there's something I haven't told you.””

I opened my eyes.

“What?””

She wiped her cheeks.

“The baby who died wasn't the child that family believed had died.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then whose baby was it?””

She looked directly at me.

“Their biological son was stillborn. But the baby they took home was alive.””

I felt my knees weaken.

“Who was that baby?””

My mother shook her head.

“I don't know. Your father never told me the name.””

I looked at the envelope.

“Does the report say?””

She nodded.

I opened it.

Inside was a hospital report, a copy of the original identification bands, and a handwritten note.

The report confirmed that Noah's identity had been corrected before discharge.

But the second child's record had a different notation.

*PATERNITY DISPUTE — PRIVATE REVIEW REQUESTED.*

At the bottom was a name.

The father listed on the original record.

I read it once.

Then again.

My heart stopped.

It was my father's name.

Robert Hale.

I looked at my mother.

She began sobbing.

And suddenly I understood why Vanessa had spent years trying to get her hands on the original records.

The secret wasn't that Noah wasn't my son.

The secret was that someone else in our family might have been hiding a child whose existence could change everything.

And that child had grown up believing he belonged to another family.

My phone rang.

Officer Harris.

I answered.

“Mr. Hale, we need you to come to the station immediately.””

“Why?””

His voice was serious.

“We've located Ethan Cole.””

I closed my eyes.

“Good. Have you recovered the box?””

“Yes.””

“Then what's wrong?””

There was a pause.

“Mr. Hale, Ethan has made a statement.””

“What kind of statement?””

“He says Vanessa wasn't the person who originally planned the scheme involving Noah.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who was?””

Officer Harris lowered his voice.

“Your father.””

I stared at my mother's face.

She looked as though she had been expecting those words for fourteen years.

Then Officer Harris added:

“And according to Ethan, your father left behind one more child.””
