Chapter 13: The Child My Father Left Behind
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
My mother stood in front of me, clutching her handbag as though it contained the last pieces of a life she had spent fourteen years trying to protect.
Officer Harris was still on the phone.
“Mr. Hale, did you hear me?””
“Yes.””
“Ethan claims your father arranged for another child to be raised under a different identity. We need you to come in.””
I looked at my mother.
“Is there another child?””
She closed her eyes.
“Marcus, please.””
“Don't ask me to be patient anymore. I've been patient for fourteen years.””
She began crying.
“I don't know where he is.””
“Who?””
“The child.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Mom, are you telling me Dad had another son?””
She nodded.
I stepped backward.
My father had been dead for three years. I had mourned him, delivered his eulogy, and stood beside his grave promising to take care of the family he had left behind.
Now I was discovering that the family itself had been built around secrets.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Your father made me promise.””
“He's dead!””
“I know!””
Her voice broke.
“I know, Marcus. But you don't understand what happened.””
I looked at the hospital report again.
There were two babies.
One was Noah.
The other was a child whose identity had been changed.
And somewhere in the middle of that confusion was my father's name.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
My mother sat down on the porch steps.
“Your father had an affair before you were born.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“He told me about it after the woman became pregnant. He said the relationship was over, and he promised he would never see her again.””
“Who was she?””
My mother shook her head.
“I only knew her first name. Margaret.””
I felt dizzy.
“Did she have a child?””
“Yes.””
“Was it a boy?””
She nodded.
“Your father believed the boy had died shortly after birth. He was told there had been complications.””
I looked down at the hospital report.
“Then why is there a paternity dispute?””
My mother wiped her cheeks.
“Because the hospital later discovered that the baby listed under Margaret's name had been given to another family. The child they believed had died was actually alive, but the records were wrong.””
I couldn't process it.
“Was that baby Noah?””
“No. Noah was Rebecca's baby. His records were corrected before discharge.””
“Then who was the other child?””
“I don't know, Marcus. I swear.””
I called Officer Harris back.
He instructed me to come to the station and bring the original report.
My mother insisted on accompanying me.
On the drive, she finally explained why my father had become so secretive during the final years of his life.
He had received anonymous letters.
Someone knew about the affair.
Someone knew about the hospital records.
And someone had threatened to reveal everything unless he paid them.
“Did Dad pay them?”” I asked.
My mother nodded.
“Several times.””
“How much?””
“I don't know.””
I tightened my hands around the steering wheel.
“Where did the money come from?””
“His private accounts.””
The same accounts that had funded the children's trust.
I said nothing.
When we arrived at the station, Officer Harris met us in a small interview room.
Ethan Cole was already there.
He looked different without the expensive jacket and confident smile.
His hands were cuffed to the table.
He raised his eyes when I entered.
“Marcus.””
I ignored the greeting.
“Where is the box?””
“Safe.””
“Where is the original letter?””
“Also safe.””
“Who is the other child?””
Ethan glanced toward Officer Harris.
“I've already told them everything.””
“Then tell me.””
He leaned back.
“Your father had a relationship with a woman named Margaret Cole.””
I frowned.
“Cole?””
“My mother.””
The room went silent.
Ethan continued.
“I'm the child your father knew about. I was born before you. My mother raised me alone. Robert Hale never publicly acknowledged me.””
I stared at him.
“You're saying you're my half-brother?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Officer Harris.
“Is there proof?””
“Ethan has provided documents and agreed to independent DNA testing,” Harris replied.
“We're verifying his statements.””
Ethan leaned forward.
“Your father knew I existed. He paid for my education. He helped my mother financially. But he never wanted me to use the Hale name.””
“Why?””
“Because he was afraid your mother would leave him.””
I glanced at my mother.
She looked devastated.
Ethan continued.
“Years later, when the hospital records became complicated, Robert saw an opportunity to protect his reputation. He used the settlement to keep the matter quiet.””
I shook my head.
“My father didn't arrange a baby switch.””
“No. But he helped conceal the records afterward.””
“Why?””
Ethan's expression hardened.
“Because the hospital error exposed his affair. And because another child was involved in a separate dispute that could have destroyed his business.””
Officer Harris placed a document on the table.
“This is the original letter recovered from the box. We need to establish its authenticity.””
I read the first few lines.
It was written by Rebecca.
Marcus,
If you ever discover the truth, remember that the children did nothing wrong.
I swallowed.
Robert believes he can keep everyone silent with money. He is wrong.
There is a child out there who deserves to know who his father was.
The letter continued.
Ethan knows where the records are. Vanessa knows what they contain. And I am afraid that one day they will use Noah to get what they want.
I looked at Ethan.
“Why did Vanessa want the letter?””
“Because it contains the original trust instructions.””
I frowned.
“Explain.””
“Your father promised to establish a fund for all the children affected by the hospital dispute and his personal arrangements. But he changed the terms after learning that Vanessa was trying to manipulate the beneficiary list.””
I stared at the paper.
“Who were the other children?””
Ethan slid another document across the table.
There were three names.
Noah Hale.
Lily Hale.
And a third name.
*Ethan Cole.*
I looked up.
“Why are you listed?””
“Because your father eventually accepted me as his son. Privately.””
My mother covered her mouth.
Ethan continued.
“But there was another beneficiary. A child who wasn't listed because the hospital had never corrected the original family records.””
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“That's what Vanessa was trying to discover.””
Before I could respond, Officer Harris's phone rang.
He listened for several seconds.
Then his expression changed.
“Understood.””
He ended the call.
“Mr. Hale, we have located Vanessa.””
“Where?””
“She is at the Hale family property.””
I frowned.
“My father's old house?””
Harris nodded.
“And she's not alone.””
“Who is with her?””
He looked directly at me.
“Your brother Daniel.””
I stood.
“What?””
Harris closed his notebook.
“Your brother has apparently agreed to help her retrieve something from the property before our officers arrive.””
I turned toward Ethan.
He lowered his eyes.

Then he whispered:
“She's looking for the final page of your father's will.””
