Chapter 3: My Brother Was in My Son's Bedroom
For several seconds, I couldn't breathe.
I enlarged the security footage.
The image was grainy, but the blue jacket was unmistakable.
Daniel owned only one jacket like that. I had bought it for him the previous Christmas.
He was standing in the hallway outside Noah's bedroom.
Looking left.
Looking right.
Then he opened the door.
“That's not me,” Daniel said.
I didn't look away from the screen.
“It's your jacket.””
“I have plenty of jackets.””
“You wore that one to Thanksgiving.””
“Marcus, come on.””
The older officer stepped closer.
“Sir, we'd like you to explain why you were entering the child's bedroom.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I wasn't.””
I played the clip again.
He entered at 10:51.
He left at 10:56.
Five minutes.
Five minutes inside my son's room.
And during those five minutes, someone had moved the backpack.
“Daniel,” I said quietly, “what did you do?””
He looked at me.
His eyes were wet.
“Nothing that was supposed to hurt Noah.””
That sentence was worse than a confession.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Marcus, this is getting ridiculous. Daniel was probably looking for something. You're turning an innocent situation into a family scandal.””
The officer raised his hand.
“Ma'am, please let him answer.””
Daniel sat down heavily on the sofa.
He rubbed his palms against his jeans.
“I came over because Vanessa called me.””
“When?”” I asked.
“This morning.””
“Why?””
He glanced at her.
She shook her head slightly.
I saw it.
So did the officer.
“Sir,” the officer said, “please explain in your own words.””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“She said she needed help moving some money.””
“Why?””
“She didn't tell me everything.””
“Did you know it was going into Noah's backpack?””
He stared at the floor.
“No.””
Vanessa laughed sharply.
“That's a lie. You knew exactly what I asked you to do.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“You told me it was temporary!””
The room went silent.
I looked between them.
“What was temporary?””
Daniel's mouth opened, but Vanessa interrupted.
“Stop talking.””
“No,” he said.
“Daniel.””
“You said you were going to scare him. You said Marcus would finally understand that Noah was ruining our marriage.””
I felt something inside me go cold.
“Ruining our marriage?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Vanessa said you spent all your time worrying about Noah. She said Lily was being neglected. She said you were choosing your son over your wife.””
I stared at him.
“That doesn't explain the money.””
Daniel looked down again.
“She told me she needed someone to move an envelope into Noah's room. She said she wanted you to find it before dinner.””
“And you agreed?””
He nodded.
“I'm sorry.””
I let out a bitter laugh.
“Sorry?””
“I didn't think she would call the police.””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“You're making yourself sound innocent now?””
Daniel stood up.
“You told me it would be a family argument! You said Marcus would ground Noah, send him to his grandmother's house for a few days, and then everything would settle down.””
I looked at my wife.
“Is that what you wanted?””
She didn't answer.
“Vanessa?””
She folded her arms.
“I wanted my family back.””
I stared at her.
“Your family?””
“You know what I mean.””
“No. Explain it.””
She looked toward Lily.
Then Noah.
Then me.
“You have spent four years making that boy the center of everything. Every decision revolves around him. Every dollar goes to him. Every weekend is planned around him.””
Noah looked stunned.
I felt my hands beginning to shake.
“He's my son.””
“And I'm your wife!””
“And Lily is your daughter!””
Vanessa pointed toward the staircase.
“Lily deserves a father who has time for her. She deserves a home where she isn't constantly competing with a teenage boy.””
Lily started crying.
I turned toward her.
“Sweetheart, you never have to compete with anyone.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“Don't turn her against me.””
“I didn't put eight thousand dollars in my son's backpack.””
She looked away.
The older officer asked Daniel whether he had touched the backpack.
Daniel nodded.
“I moved it from the closet to the desk. Vanessa had already left the envelope inside.””
My stomach tightened.
“So you knew the money was there.””
“I knew there was money. I didn't count it.””
“Why didn't you stop her?””
Daniel looked at me helplessly.
“Because I owed her.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He rubbed his face.
“I borrowed money from her last year. Twenty thousand dollars.””
I stared at him.
“You told me you paid that back.””
“I lied.””
The room seemed to tilt.
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“See? Everyone has secrets, Marcus.””
Daniel continued.
“She said she would forgive the debt if I helped her. She told me she needed Noah out of the house before you changed the will.””
I froze.
“What will?””
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Daniel looked at her.
“You didn't tell him?””
I turned toward my wife.
“What will?””
She took a step backward.
“Daniel, shut up.””
But he was already speaking.
“Vanessa said you were planning to leave everything to Noah. She said she had seen the documents.””
I shook my head.
“What documents?””
Daniel looked confused.
“The inheritance papers.””
I had never shown Vanessa any inheritance papers.
In fact, I had never prepared them.
My father had died two years earlier, leaving me a small commercial property and a substantial investment account. I had kept the details private because I wanted to make sure everything was handled properly.
But I had never made a will.
And I had certainly never told anyone that Noah would inherit everything.
“Where did you hear that?”” I asked.
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
“She said you had already signed something.””
I turned to my wife.
“Have you seen my financial documents?””
She didn't answer.
The older officer asked the younger one to preserve the security footage.
Then he requested that Vanessa and Daniel remain available for further questioning.
Neither was arrested at that moment, but the officers made it clear that the recording, the footage, and the statements would be reviewed as part of the investigation.
I barely heard them.
My mind was racing.
The money.
The envelope.
The fabricated theft.
The inheritance.
Why had Vanessa gone to such lengths to make Noah look like a criminal?
And why had she believed that getting him out of the house would change my financial decisions?
As the officers prepared to leave, Lily suddenly tugged at my sleeve.
“Dad?””
I knelt beside her.
“What is it, sweetheart?””
She looked at Vanessa.
Then she leaned closer and whispered.
“There's something else.””
I glanced at the officers.
“What else?””
Lily's fingers twisted around the edge of her cardigan.
“Mom told me not to tell you about the other paper.””
My heart started pounding.
“What paper?””
“The one she keeps in her jewelry box.””
Vanessa's head snapped around.
“Lily!””
My daughter jumped.
I took her hand.
“It's okay. You're safe.””
Lily looked up at me.
“Mom said if you found out, you would send us away.””
I swallowed.
“Send who away?””
She pointed toward the hallway.
Then she said something that made every person in the room turn toward her.
“Mom said the paper proves Noah isn't really supposed to live here anymore.””
I stared at my wife.
Vanessa was no longer pretending to cry.
She was furious.
“Lily, you have no idea what you're talking about!””
But my daughter had already started crying.
I stood up slowly.
“What paper, Vanessa?””
She said nothing.
I walked toward the staircase.
“I'm going upstairs.””
The older officer told me not to disturb anything that might be relevant to the investigation, so I stopped and waited for instructions.
But before anyone could move, Lily spoke again.
“It's not in Mom's bedroom.””
I turned.
“Where is it?””
She pointed toward the master closet.
“Behind the mirror.””
Vanessa went completely still.
May you like
And then Daniel whispered the words that changed everything.
“Marcus, don't open that box unless you're ready to find out what she really planned for Noah.””
