The Money That Was Never Hers / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13: The Truth Hidden in My Own Hands

I stared at the photograph on the floor.

My own face stared back at me.

Not the face of a stranger.

Not someone I had forgotten.

Mine.

I picked up the phone with shaking hands.

The picture showed me standing beside my father inside his old office.

But I didn’t remember that moment.

I didn’t remember the clothes I was wearing.

I didn’t remember the conversation.

I didn’t remember being there.

“That’s impossible,” I whispered.

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew how to explain something that shouldn’t exist.

Marcus slowly stepped closer.

“Nia…”

I held up my hand.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

My eyes stayed on the image.

The date was visible.

Three years ago.

The week before my father died.

“What is this?””

Evelyn looked away.

And that told me everything.

She knew.

“You knew.””

Her eyes lifted.

“Nia…”

“You knew about this picture.””

She swallowed.

“Yes.””

The anger came quickly.

“You knew I was in that office?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

Her expression broke.

“I couldn’t.””

I laughed once.

A painful sound.

“That’s everyone’s favorite answer.””

I looked at Marcus.

“You couldn’t.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“You couldn’t.””

I pointed at the phone.

“And somehow I’m always the last person to know what’s happening in my own life.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Your father asked me not to tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because you asked him to forget.””

I froze.

“What?””

She looked at the picture.

“You don’t remember that night, do you?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Evelyn took a breath.

“Because you were the one who made him promise.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Marcus.

“What is she talking about?””

He looked down.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because Marcus knew.

“You remember your father’s illness?””

“Yes.””

“The months before he died?””

“Yes.””

“You remember the stress?””

I nodded slowly.

My father had been different near the end.

Quieter.

Always working.

Always worried.

But I thought it was because he knew time was running out.

Marcus spoke softly.

“You found documents.””

My heart stopped.

“What documents?””

“Financial records.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“About the stolen money?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“And?””

Marcus continued.

“You wanted to confront him.””

“Why?””

“Because you thought he was hiding something from you.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“So I went to his office?””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

Marcus’s face tightened.

“You found out the truth.””

“What truth?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was unbearable.

Then Evelyn finally spoke.

“Your father wasn’t protecting the family from someone else.””

I waited.

“He was protecting the family from what would happen if the truth came out.””

I stared at her.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

She walked toward the desk.

“He found out someone had been manipulating accounts for years.””

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“You.””

I felt like the room tilted.

“What?””

“No.””

Evelyn shook her head quickly.

“Not you intentionally.””

“Then what?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Nia, listen.””

“I’m listening.””

“Your identity was being used.””

I froze.

“By who?””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

Then at me.

“Someone wanted it to appear like you were responsible.””

The anger faded into confusion.

“Why?””

“Because your father would never suspect you.””

I looked down.

The photograph.

The accounts.

The messages.

Everything felt like pieces of a puzzle I didn’t understand.

“Then why don’t I remember?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“Because you were hurt.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“You had an accident that night.””

I stopped.

“I don’t remember an accident.””

“You hit your head.””

Marcus nodded.

“Your father found you.””

My hand went to my temple without thinking.

A memory flashed.

A sound.

Glass breaking.

My father’s voice.

My name.

Then darkness.

I stepped back.

“No.””

Evelyn whispered:

“He asked me to keep you away from the truth until you were ready.””

I looked at her.

“Ready?””

She nodded.

“But I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

Her voice broke.

“I thought protecting you meant controlling everything.””

The honesty shocked me.

For the first time, Evelyn wasn’t defending herself.

She was admitting what she had done.

She had hidden.

She had lied.

She had hurt people.

But maybe she had also been afraid.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

A video file.

No text.

Just a recording.

I pressed play.

My father appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

“Nia,” he said.

My heart broke.

His voice.

After all this time.

“If you’re watching this, then you finally know enough to ask the right questions.””

I covered my mouth.

He continued.

“The person who used your identity was never trying to steal money.””

A pause.

“They were trying to erase the truth.””

The video glitched.

Then my father said:

“And the person who helped them…”

The screen froze.

One final frame.

May you like

A name appeared.

A name none of us expected.
