Chapter 3: The Letter Hidden Away
I didn’t sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Noah’s face.
Not the tears.
Not the fear.
The confusion.
That was the part that stayed with me.
A child should never have to wonder why an adult chose to hurt him.
Especially not an adult who claimed to love him.
By sunrise, I had made my decision.
I needed answers.
I dropped Noah off with my best friend, Tasha, and promised him I would be back soon.
He hugged me tightly before leaving.
“Mommy?””
“Yes, baby?””
“Is Grandma mad at me?””
My heart broke.
I knelt in front of him.
“Noah, look at me.””
He looked up.
“You did nothing wrong.””
“Promise?””
I held his little hands.
“I promise.””
After he left, I drove straight to the attorney’s office.
The building was quiet and modern, with polished floors and glass walls.
Daniel was waiting for me near the entrance.
He was an older man with silver hair and a serious expression.
“Nia Carter?””
“Yes.””
He shook my hand.
“Your father would be proud of you.””
I looked at him carefully.
“Why?””
He hesitated.
“Because you did exactly what he hoped you would do.””
I followed him into his office.
A thick folder sat on the desk.
My name was written across the front.
I stared at it.
“What is this?””
“Something your father prepared years ago.””
I sat down.
“Why didn’t I know?””
Daniel opened the folder.
“Because your father believed knowing too early would put you in danger.””
I frowned.
“Danger from who?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he removed an envelope.
My hands went cold.
The handwriting on the front was familiar.
I had seen it a thousand times.
My father’s handwriting.
“Nia.””
Just my name.
Nothing else.
I touched the paper.
“He wrote this?””
“Yes.””
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a single page.
My father’s words stared back at me.
My daughter,
If you are reading this, then the person I trusted most has failed the person I loved most.
I stopped.
My breathing changed.
Daniel watched me quietly.
I kept reading.
I need you to understand something. Money was never the most important thing I left behind. The truth was.
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel folded his hands.
I continued.
Evelyn will tell you she protected this family. She will tell you she sacrificed everything. But she will never tell you what happened when I was still alive.
My fingers tightened around the letter.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked away.
“I think your father wanted you to discover that yourself.””
I continued.
The account was created for Noah because I saw something before anyone else did.
I stopped.
Noah’s name.
My son.
The room felt smaller.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“Your father loved Noah very much.””
I looked back at the letter.
I knew my grandson would need protection from the same thing that hurt our family before.
A chill moved through me.
I read the next line.
Then I froze.
Because my father had written a name.
Not Evelyn.
Someone else.
Someone I never expected.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who is this?””
He became serious.
“That is the person your father believed Evelyn was protecting.””
My heart pounded.
“Protecting from what?””
Before Daniel could answer, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Excuse me.””
He stepped away.
I watched him answer.
“Yes?””
A pause.
Then his face became tense.
“No, she’s here with me.””
Another pause.
Daniel looked directly at me.
Then he whispered:
“She knows.””
I stood.
“Who knows?””
Daniel ended the call slowly.
“Nia…”
The office door opened behind me.
A familiar voice spoke.
“You really should have asked me before opening that file.””
I turned.
Evelyn stood in the doorway.
But she wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t afraid.
She was holding a second envelope.
May you like
And written across the front were four words that made my blood run cold.
*For Nia. Read last.*
