Chapter 14: The Final Piece of the Puzzle
The video stopped before revealing the name.
Of course it did.
Another secret.
Another unfinished sentence.
Another piece of my father’s truth just out of reach.
I stared at the frozen screen.
“Play it again.””
Marcus took the phone.
“I already tried.””
“Again.””
He pressed the video.
Nothing.
The file was corrupted.
Or someone wanted it that way.
Evelyn sat quietly on the couch.
She looked older than I had ever seen her.
Not weak.
Just tired.
“You know who it is,” I said.
She looked at me.
“No.””
“You know something.””
“Yes.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked down.
“Your father wanted you to find out yourself.””
I almost lost control.
“My father is not here.””
My voice cracked.
“I am here.””
That finally broke something in her.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I know.””
For a moment, we were just a mother and daughter.
Not enemies.
Not opponents.
Just two people who had lost someone.
Then Marcus spoke.
“There’s another place.””
I turned.
“What?””
He stood.
“Your father had a second office.””
I frowned.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
He hesitated.
“At the old family house.””
The house that was supposedly empty.
The house connected to the hidden server.
The house where everything started.
I looked at Evelyn.
“Did you know?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because that was where your father hid the original evidence.””
I grabbed my coat.
“Then we’re going.””
The old house looked smaller than I remembered.
Maybe because I was older.
Maybe because I finally understood how many secrets lived inside those walls.
Marcus unlocked the door.
Dust covered everything.
But one room was untouched.
My father’s second office.
Inside was a single desk.
A single chair.
And a locked drawer.
Marcus looked at me.
“He left this for you.””
I found the key inside the hidden compartment of the desk.
My hands shook as I unlocked it.
Inside were folders.
Photos.
Documents.
And one final letter.
My name.
Again.
I opened it.
My Nia,
If you are reading this, then you have discovered what I feared most.
Not that someone would steal from us.
Not that someone would betray us.
But that you would blame yourself.
I stopped.
My eyes burned.
You were never responsible for what happened.
I continued.
Someone used your trust. Your kindness. Your willingness to believe people.
My father knew me too well.
They wanted you to doubt yourself.
I turned the page.
The next line made my heart stop.
The person who helped them was not a stranger.
A name followed.
I read it.
Then I dropped the paper.
“No.””
Marcus picked it up.
His face changed.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Because the name on the page belonged to someone we all knew.
Someone who had been there.
Someone who had watched.
Someone who had acted innocent.
Someone who had helped us search for the truth.
My phone rang.
I answered.
A voice spoke immediately.
“I know you found the letter.””
I froze.
“Who is this?””
A calm voice replied:
“The person your father trusted last.””
I looked at the letter.
At the name.
At Marcus.
At Evelyn.
Then the voice said:
“You finally know what your father tried to hide.””
My grip tightened.
“Why?””
The person laughed quietly.
“Because I didn’t want to hide anymore.””
The call ended.
Seconds later, a message appeared.
One location.
May you like
One instruction.
*Come alone if you want the full truth.*
