Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The voice on the phone lasted only three seconds.

Three seconds was enough to destroy everything I thought I knew.

A man’s voice.

Deep.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Hello, Benjamin.””

My husband’s face turned white.

Not pale.

Not shocked.

White.

Like every piece of strength had been pulled from him.

I held the phone tighter against my ear.

“Who is this?””

No answer.

Only a quiet breath.

Then the voice returned.

“Victoria Hale.””

My stomach dropped.

The way he said my name felt wrong.

Like he had known it long before I knew his.

“Where is Lily?””

A soft laugh came through the speaker.

Not cruel.

Not loud.

Almost amused.

“She’s safe.””

I looked at Anna.

She had tears in her eyes.

“Who is he?”” I whispered.

But she already knew.

Benjamin already knew.

That was the worst part.

Everyone knew except me.

The man on the phone continued.

“You always were curious, Victoria.””

My grip tightened.

“Tell me where she is.””

“She has your courage.””

I felt anger rise through the fear.

“You don’t get to talk about her like you know her.””

The line went quiet.

Then:

“I knew her before she knew herself.””

Anna stepped forward.

“Give me the phone.””

Her voice shook.

The man heard her.

And immediately, his tone changed.

“Anna.””

The room froze.

Hearing him say her name was different from hearing Benjamin say it.

There was history there.

Something dark.

Something unfinished.

Anna’s hand covered her mouth.

“Where are you?””

The man laughed softly.

“You still ask questions like you already know the answers.””

“Where is my daughter?””

My heart stopped.

My daughter.

The words echoed.

I looked at Anna.

Then at Benjamin.

Neither of them looked surprised.

And somehow, that hurt more than the kidnapping.

Because it meant there were still secrets.

So many secrets.

“Anna,” the man said, “you should have stayed gone.””

Her face changed.

Fear.

Pure fear.

“Please.””

I had never heard Anna beg anyone.

Not once.

The man continued.

“You were always too emotional. That was your weakness.””

My hand trembled.

“Who are you?””

This time, he answered.

“My name is Richard Hale.””

The world became silent.

Benjamin closed his eyes.

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

Richard Hale.

Benjamin’s father.

The founder of the Hale empire.

A man who had supposedly died twelve years ago.

A man whose portrait hung in the main hallway of our home.

A man everyone believed was gone.

“No,” I whispered.

The voice on the phone smiled.

“Yes.””

I looked at Benjamin.

His expression told me the impossible truth.

His father was alive.

“End the call.””

Benjamin’s voice was barely audible.

I turned toward him.

“What?””

“End it.””

The command made anger flare inside me.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””

“Victoria, listen to me.””

“No.””

I stepped away from him.

“Twenty years. Twenty years you lied to me.””

His face tightened.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

He didn’t answer.

“From him?””

Silence.

That was enough.

I looked back at the phone.

Richard was still listening.

Still enjoying every second.

“You let Benjamin believe I was dead,” Anna said.

Richard replied calmly.

“I let Benjamin believe many things.””

Benjamin moved toward the phone.

“Father.””

The word sounded painful.

Not respectful.

Not loving.

Like a wound.

A long pause followed.

Then Richard spoke.

“My son.””

Benjamin looked sick.

“You took Lily.””

“I protected what belongs to this family.””

“She doesn’t belong to you.””

A strange silence followed.

Then Richard laughed.

“Still pretending you’re different from me?””

Benjamin’s jaw tightened.

“I’m nothing like you.””

Richard’s voice became colder.

“That’s where you’re wrong.””

The call ended.

Just like that.

No warning.

No goodbye.

No location.

Nothing.

Only silence.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

The mansion around us felt unfamiliar.

The same walls.

The same paintings.

The same expensive furniture.

But suddenly, I saw everything differently.

A house built on secrets.

A marriage built on missing pieces.

A family name built on things nobody wanted exposed.

I looked at Anna.

“You have a lot to explain.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“Start with Lily.””

Anna looked down.

“She’s my daughter.””

“I know that.””

My voice cracked.

“What I don’t know is why everyone knew except me.””

Anna closed her eyes.

“Because I asked Benjamin not to tell you.””

I stared at her.

“You asked him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her face broke.

“Because I knew what Richard would do if you knew.””

I laughed quietly.

“Anna, Richard Hale was dead.””

“No.””

The word came quickly.

“No, Victoria.””

She looked at me.

“He was hiding.””

A chill moved through me.

“How long?””

“Since before his death was announced.””

I looked at Benjamin.

He looked away.

The betrayal felt endless.

“Benjamin knew?””

Anna nodded.

“He helped me disappear.””

I turned toward my husband.

The anger was immediate.

“You helped her leave.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Benjamin looked exhausted.

“Because Richard was watching you.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

Anna walked toward the hidden room.

She touched the files.

“Richard didn’t just collect information.””

She opened a folder.

“He controlled people.””

Inside were pages of names.

Payments.

Private records.

Threats.

“He found weaknesses,” Anna said.

“And he used them.””

My eyes moved over the documents.

There were people’s lives reduced to paper.

“He found out about Lily before she was born.””

Benjamin spoke quietly.

“He wanted her.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Anna said:

“Because Lily was the last thing he couldn’t control.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Anna looked at Benjamin.

And I saw the sadness in her eyes.

“Lily was supposed to inherit something.””

“Money?””

“No.””

Anna’s voice dropped.

“Proof.””

The room became still.

“Proof of what?””

Benjamin stepped closer.

“Victoria…”

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Tell me.””

He hesitated.

Then finally said:

“My father built the Hale empire through crimes.””

I stared at him.

“Crimes?””

Anna nodded.

“He destroyed businesses. Ruined families. Forced people out. Then he bought what remained.””

The words were heavy.

But somehow, they weren’t the most shocking part.

“What does Lily have?””

Anna opened another folder.

Inside was a small memory card.

“Your father recorded everything.””

Benjamin looked at it.

“What?””

Anna’s eyes filled with tears.

“He knew he was losing control. He knew people would eventually come after him.””

She held the memory card.

“So he created a backup.””

“Why would he leave evidence against himself?””

Anna looked at me.

“Because he didn’t think anyone would ever be brave enough to use it.””

A sound came from outside.

A car door.

Then another.

Benjamin immediately moved toward the window.

His face changed.

“They found us.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

He looked outside.

Several black vehicles were entering the property.

Not police.

Not security.

Private.

Organized.

Anna grabbed my arm.

“Victoria, we have to go.””

I looked at her.

“Where?””

“Somewhere Richard can’t find us.””

I almost laughed.

“This is my home.””

Anna’s expression softened.

“No.””

She looked around the mansion.

“This was never your home.””

The words hurt because I knew she was right.

Benjamin grabbed a set of keys from the table.

“There’s a way out.””

I stared at him.

“You knew about another exit too?””

He didn’t defend himself.

“I know every secret in this house.””

The honesty was painful.

But there was something else now.

Urgency.

We moved quickly through the hidden passage behind the bookshelf.

Anna held my hand.

Benjamin walked ahead.

And for the first time in twenty years, we weren’t pretending.

No perfect marriage.

No perfect family.

No perfect name.

Just three people running from a man who had already taken too much from us.

We reached the end of the passage.

A small door opened into the old gardens behind the mansion.

Benjamin pushed it open.

Then stopped.

I saw why.

Standing outside beneath the trees was a man.

Older.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

A familiar face from every portrait in the house.

Richard Hale smiled.

And beside him stood Lily.

Unharmed.

Terrified.

Richard looked directly at me.

“Victoria.””

My blood went cold.

He smiled.

“After twenty years, you finally learned the truth.””

Then he looked at Benjamin.

“And now my son has to choose.””

Benjamin stepped forward.

“Let her go.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

He placed a hand gently on Lily’s shoulder.

Then said the words that made Benjamin freeze.

“Because if Victoria learns why Anna really disappeared…”

May you like

He looked at me.

“…she’ll never forgive you.””
