Chapter 7: The Betrayal Inside the Family

The name left Benjamin’s mouth like a confession.

“Caroline.””

For a moment, nobody reacted.

Not because we didn’t understand.

Because we couldn’t.

Caroline.

My closest friend.

My assistant for twelve years.

The woman who knew my schedule better than I did.

The woman who had poured tea for Anna when she returned to my life hours earlier.

The woman who had stood beside me through every crisis.

No.

My mind rejected it before my heart could.

“That’s impossible.””

The words escaped before I could stop them.

Benjamin looked at me.

“I wish it was.””

I shook my head.

“Caroline doesn’t know anything about this.””

Anna looked down.

A painful expression crossed her face.

“Victoria…”

I turned toward her.

“Don’t.””

My voice was sharp.

“Don’t look at me like you already knew.””

Anna didn’t answer.

And that silence hurt.

“How long?””

Benjamin’s eyes lowered.

“I suspected for years.””

The anger came instantly.

“You suspected?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I didn’t have proof.””

I stared at him.

“You are unbelievable.””

He accepted the anger.

Maybe because he deserved it.

Maybe because he knew nothing he said could undo what happened.

Behind us, Richard watched quietly.

Too quietly.

He wasn’t surprised.

That bothered me.

“You knew,” I said.

Richard smiled.

“Of course I knew.””

Everyone turned toward him.

He adjusted his jacket calmly.

“Caroline was always intelligent.””

Anna’s face hardened.

“You recruited her.””

Richard didn’t deny it.

“I gave her an opportunity.””

“You destroyed her.””

“No.””

He looked almost offended.

“I improved her.””

My stomach turned.

Richard Hale didn’t see people as people.

He saw tools.

Pieces.

Resources.

Just like the files hidden beneath the mansion.

I looked at Lily.

She was watching all of us.

Confused.

Scared.

I hated that another child had been dragged into the darkness of adults.

I stepped toward Richard.

“You used everyone.””

He smiled.

“You’re finally understanding.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m understanding that you believe control is the same thing as power.””

For the first time, he looked annoyed.

Good.

I wanted him to feel something.

Anything.

Richard looked at Benjamin.

“You taught her confidence.””

Benjamin replied:

“No.””

He looked at me.

“She always had it.””

The words surprised me.

Because they sounded like the husband I thought I knew.

The man I had loved before secrets buried him.

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Enough.””

He looked toward the driveway.

“Caroline has the evidence now.””

Anna stepped forward.

“She has Lily’s proof?””

Richard smiled.

“She has everything.””

A cold silence followed.

“What proof?”” I asked.

Benjamin looked at me.

“The memory card.””

“The one from your father?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Richard.

“You let her take it.””

His smile disappeared.

“Let?””

That one word changed everything.

Benjamin noticed too.

“You didn’t send her.””

Richard said nothing.

Anna whispered:

“Caroline betrayed both sides.””

The realization settled over us.

She wasn’t working only for Richard.

She wasn’t only protecting herself.

She had her own plan.

We moved inside the mansion because there was nowhere else to go.

The irony wasn’t lost on me.

For twenty years, I believed this house represented everything I had built.

Security.

Love.

Success.

Now every hallway felt like a witness.

Every room held a secret.

Benjamin stood near the fireplace, staring at an old family portrait.

His father.

His younger self.

The Hale legacy.

A lie painted in expensive frames.

“Tell me about Caroline.””

He looked at me.

“I met her when she was twenty-five.””

“And?””

“She worked for one of my father’s companies.””

Anna crossed her arms.

“She wasn’t just an employee.””

Benjamin nodded.

“She was investigating him.””

I frowned.

“Like you?””

“Yes.””

That surprised me.

“Then why would she betray Anna?””

Benjamin looked at the floor.

“Because she found something else.””

“What?””

“My father’s real weakness.””

Richard.

Always Richard.

Always another hidden layer.

“What was it?””

Benjamin hesitated.

Anna answered.

“She found out Richard wasn’t protecting the Hale empire.””

She looked at me.

“He was protecting a secret about his own past.””

I frowned.

“What secret?””

Before anyone answered, the front doors opened.

Everyone froze.

A woman walked in.

Elegant.

Calm.

Holding a black folder.

Caroline.

My chest tightened.

“Caroline.””

She stopped.

Her expression was unreadable.

For years, I had known her as the woman who remembered my coffee order, who brought flowers when I was sick, who knew exactly when I needed silence.

Now she looked like a stranger.

“Victoria.””

My voice trembled.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she placed the folder on the table.

“I never wanted this to happen.””

I laughed softly.

“That’s your explanation?””

“No.””

She looked at Benjamin.

“Because you’re right.””

Benjamin’s eyes narrowed.

“You worked for my father.””

“Yes.””

Richard smiled.

“There she is.””

Caroline ignored him.

“I worked for Richard because he had something I needed.””

Anna stepped forward.

“What?””

Caroline looked at her.

“My brother.””

The room went quiet.

“My brother?””

Caroline nodded.

“Richard destroyed his life.””

I stared at her.

“Then why help him?””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“Because I was trying to get close enough to destroy him.””

Nobody spoke.

The answer was not what I expected.

Benjamin looked suspicious.

“You stole the evidence.””

“I took it.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard wasn’t the only person who needed to be exposed.””

Her eyes moved to Benjamin.

Then to Anna.

Then finally to me.

“There are things in that file you don’t know.””

My heart sank.

“What things?””

Caroline opened the folder.

Inside were copies.

Documents.

Photographs.

Records.

She pulled out one page.

Then handed it to me.

I looked down.

And my blood ran cold.

It was a report.

A private investigation.

About me.

My name.

My life.

But the date was impossible.

The investigation started before I met Benjamin.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Caroline’s voice softened.

“Something Richard never wanted you to see.””

I looked at Benjamin.

He looked confused.

For the first time, he looked as lost as I felt.

“What does this mean?””

Caroline swallowed.

“It means Richard wasn’t watching you because of Anna.””

A chill moved through the room.

“Then why?””

Caroline looked directly at me.

“Because of who you really are.””

The words made my heart stop.

“What?””

She pulled out another document.

This one older.

Much older.

A birth record.

Not mine.

Someone else’s.

My eyes moved across the page.

And then I saw the name.

My hands started shaking.

Because the person listed on the document was connected to the Hale family.

Connected to Richard.

Connected to me.

I looked at Caroline.

“Why are you showing me this?””

She whispered:

“Because Victoria, the reason Richard spent twenty years controlling your life…”

She paused.

Then said:

“…is because you were never just his daughter-in-law.””

The room went silent.

Benjamin stepped forward.

“What are you saying?””

Caroline looked at him.

Then at me.

“The woman who raised you lied about where you came from.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“No.””

Caroline pushed the document closer.

“Your real family name wasn’t Hale.””

I stared at the paper.

At the name.

At the truth that had been hidden my entire life.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence appeared.

*Ask Benjamin what happened the night your mother died.*

I looked up slowly.

Benjamin’s face had lost all color.

Because he knew.

May you like

And this time, he couldn’t hide it.

Not anymore.
