Chapter 6: The Truth Benjamin Never Told Me
The garden suddenly felt smaller.
The trees that had once made our estate look peaceful now looked like walls.
The flowers.
The stone paths.
The fountain where I had celebrated birthdays and anniversaries.
Everything beautiful about my home had become a stage for secrets.
And standing in the center of it was the man whose name had been hanging above my family for decades.
Richard Hale.
Alive.
Smiling.
Holding Lily’s shoulder like he had the right.
Like she was another possession in a collection of things he owned.
I looked at Benjamin.
He wasn’t looking at his father.
He was looking at me.
And I knew before anyone spoke.
Richard wasn’t threatening me with a lie.
He was threatening me with the truth.
“Benjamin,” I whispered.
He looked away.
That was enough.
My heart sank.
“What did he mean?””
Nobody answered.
Richard smiled.
“Still protecting her?””
Benjamin stepped forward.
“Leave her out of this.””
Richard laughed softly.
“There it is.””
His eyes moved over his son.
“The same weakness you’ve always had.””
Benjamin’s hands tightened into fists.
“You don’t know anything about me.””
“I created everything about you.””
The words were cruel.
Simple.
And they landed.
I looked at Lily.
She was standing perfectly still.
Too still for a child.
Her eyes kept moving between Anna and Richard.
Like she had spent years learning how dangerous adults could be.
I walked forward.
“Lily.””
Richard’s hand tightened slightly.
Not enough to hurt her.
Enough to remind everyone he was in control.
“Careful, Victoria.””
My anger burned.
“She’s a child.””
“And she’s carrying something very important.””
Anna stepped forward.
“Richard, this ends now.””
His expression changed.
The amusement disappeared.
“Does it?””
Anna stared at him.
“You can’t keep running forever.””
Richard smiled.
“Neither can you.””
The words hit her.
I saw it.
A flash of guilt.
Fear.
Something hidden.
I turned toward Anna.
“What is he talking about?””
She didn’t answer.
“Anna.””
Her eyes filled.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn’t.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone kept saying that.
Protect you.
Protect you.
Protect you.
Yet every secret had left me more vulnerable.
“Everyone keeps protecting me by lying to me.””
My voice cracked.
“Do you understand how that feels?””
Anna lowered her head.
“I do.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t.””
I looked at Benjamin.
“You both made choices for me.””
The silence that followed was worse than an argument.
Because they knew I was right.
Richard watched us with satisfaction.
He enjoyed division.
He always had.
“Victoria,” Benjamin said quietly.
I looked at him.
“Tell me.””
His face changed.
“Not here.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Right here.””
Richard smiled.
“Yes, Benjamin.””
He tilted his head.
“Tell your wife.””
Benjamin looked at his father.
Then at me.
And finally, he stopped fighting.
“I knew Anna before you met me.””
The confession was quiet.
But it shattered something inside me.
I stared at him.
“What?””
Anna closed her eyes.
Benjamin continued.
“My father had been watching her because she was investigating him.””
“Investigating?””
“She was a journalist.””
I looked at Anna.
She nodded slowly.
“I found documents showing what Richard had done.””
Richard’s expression remained calm.
But his eyes changed.
“Anna was always too curious.””
I ignored him.
“You knew her before me?””
Benjamin nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“I was assigned to stop her.””
The words made my stomach twist.
“Stop her?””
Benjamin looked ashamed.
“My father wanted me to find out what she knew.””
I took a step back.
“And you did.””
“Yes.””
The garden went silent.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“Then why did you help her?””
Benjamin looked at Anna.
“Because I realized she was telling the truth.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
Just slightly.
Benjamin continued.
“My father wasn’t protecting the company.””
He looked at Richard.
“He was protecting himself.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Be careful.””
But Benjamin kept going.
“For years, I watched him destroy people and call it business.””
His voice became stronger.
“I watched him ruin families and call it strategy.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You sound very brave now.””
Benjamin didn’t move.
“Because I’m done being afraid of you.””
For the first time, Richard looked genuinely angry.
The old man’s mask cracked.
Then he looked at me.
“Victoria, do you want to know what your husband did?””
My chest tightened.
Benjamin immediately said:
“Don’t.””
Richard smiled.
“There it is.””
He looked at me.
“He always wanted to tell you.””
I looked at Benjamin.
“Tell me what?””
Richard answered for him.
“The night Anna disappeared.””
Everything stopped.
Anna looked away.
Benjamin went still.
I felt cold.
The night.
The night I had spent twenty years trying not to remember.
The rain.
Anna crying.
Benjamin standing in my hallway.
The next morning, Anna was gone.
“I thought you said she left,” I whispered.
Benjamin said nothing.
Richard continued.
“She didn’t leave.””
My voice became smaller.
“What happened?””
Benjamin looked at me.
And I saw regret.
“I found her.””
Anna closed her eyes.
“I found her at the old train station.””
My heart pounded.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Benjamin swallowed.
“Because she asked me not to.””
I looked at Anna.
“You asked him?””
She nodded.
“Richard had found out I was going public with the evidence.””
“And?””
“He threatened Lily.””
My eyes moved to the child.
“She wasn’t even born yet.””
Anna’s face broke.
“He threatened everyone I loved.””
I looked at Benjamin.
“And you helped her disappear.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you let me think she abandoned me?””
His answer was barely audible.
“Because Richard was watching you.””
I felt tears building.
“You could have trusted me.””
Benjamin looked destroyed.
“I know.””
The honesty hurt more.
“I should have.””
Richard laughed.
A cold sound.
“How touching.””
Everyone turned toward him.
He looked at Benjamin.
“You always did have a weakness for pretending you were better than me.””
Benjamin stepped forward.
“No.””
Richard raised an eyebrow.
“No?””
Benjamin looked at me.
Then at Lily.
Then back at his father.
“I’m better because I know I was wrong.””
The words surprised everyone.
Even me.
Richard’s face darkened.
“You think admitting weakness makes you strong?””
“No.””
Benjamin’s voice was steady.
“I think protecting innocent people does.””
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Lily spoke.
Quietly.
“Mr. Hale.””
Everyone looked at her.
Richard turned.
“What?””
The little girl looked terrified.
But she didn’t back down.
“My mom said you would do this.””
Richard smiled.
“Do what?””
“Make everyone fight each other.””
The smile disappeared.
Lily continued.
“She said your biggest trick was making people forget who the real enemy was.””
Anna’s eyes filled with tears.
Because those were her words.
Not Lily’s.
Richard stared at the child.
Then slowly smiled.
“Smart girl.””
Lily stepped backward.
“I know where the evidence is.””
That changed everything.
Benjamin looked at her.
“What did you say?””
Richard’s expression hardened.
Anna froze.
“Lily…”
The little girl reached into her pocket.
Not for the memory card.
For something else.
A small piece of paper.
“I was supposed to give this to Victoria.””
My heart stopped.
Richard moved.
Fast.
But Benjamin was faster.
He stepped between them.
“Don’t.””
Richard looked at his son.
“You would choose them over your family?””
Benjamin answered quietly.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I’m choosing the family I should have protected.””
A long silence followed.
Then Lily handed me the paper.
I opened it.
Only one sentence was written.
Anna’s handwriting.
My hands started shaking.
*Victoria, if you are reading this, Benjamin has finally told you the truth. But there is one thing he still doesn’t know.*
I looked at Benjamin.
A strange fear crossed his face.
I kept reading.
*The person who betrayed us twenty years ago was not Richard.*
My breath caught.
The next line made my blood run cold.
*It was someone Benjamin trusted more than anyone.*
I looked up.
Benjamin’s face had changed.
Because he knew exactly who Anna meant.
And before he could speak, a car engine roared from behind the mansion.
Someone was leaving.
Richard smiled.
Not because he was winning.
Because he knew something we didn’t.
“Too late,” he whispered.
Benjamin turned toward the sound.
Then his expression collapsed.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Who is it?””
He didn’t answer.
He just whispered a name.
A name that made Anna cover her mouth.
Because the person driving away with the evidence was the last person any of us expected.
May you like
Someone who had been standing beside us the entire time.
Someone we trusted.
