Chapter 2: The Lie on Camera

Nobody spoke as my father opened the video.

The hotel entrance seemed brighter than ever. Every face was visible beneath the white architectural lights, every expression impossible to hide. A valet stood motionless beside a polished black car. Guests who had been chatting moments earlier now watched the phone in my father's hand.

Victoria took one step forward.

"Daniel, what exactly are you doing?""

He didn't look at her.

"Watching what happened to my daughter.""

"You're making a scene.""

"No," Daniel replied.

"I'm checking the facts.""

Chloe folded her arms.

"Seriously, Dad? You're going to believe a security camera over your own wife?""

My father finally looked up.

"I haven't decided what I believe.""

He tapped the screen.

"That's why we're watching.""

The video began.

The angle was slightly elevated, capturing the hotel entrance, the red carpet, and the pavement where I'd fallen. The footage had no sound, but the picture was sharp enough to show the details of everyone's movements.

There I was, standing beside the gold doors with my small evening purse held against my waist.

Victoria approached me.

On the phone, she pointed toward the driveway, then toward the street. I shook my head.

She stepped closer.

I tried to walk around her.

Then Victoria seized my upper arm.

My stomach twisted as I watched her jerk me backward. The movement was unmistakable. She leaned forward, planted both hands against me, and shoved.

I hit the pavement.

My hands struck first. My knees followed. The fabric at the bottom of my dress tore as I slid across the rough concrete.

Chloe stood nearby, watching.

Then she laughed.

Not a nervous laugh. Not a startled reaction.

She threw her head back, pointed at me, and laughed while I struggled to get up.

A woman in the footage turned toward us. A valet stopped walking. Several guests looked over.

Victoria lifted her hand again.

My father's fingers tightened around the phone.

"Stop it," Victoria whispered.

He kept watching.

"Daniel, please. This is a private matter.""

He paused the footage.

"Private?"" His voice remained low.

"You pushed my daughter in front of half the city.""

"I was trying to stop her from entering an event she wasn't authorized to attend.""

I stared at her.

"You told me Dad invited me.""

Victoria swung toward me.

"You misunderstood.""

"No, I didn't.""

"Don't raise your voice at me.""

My father stepped between us.

"Don't speak to her like that.""

Victoria's lips parted.

For years, she'd controlled every family gathering with a carefully chosen sigh, a quiet accusation, or a reminder that she was the woman who had stayed beside Daniel through his busiest years.

She was accustomed to my father defending her.

She was not accustomed to him standing in front of me.

"Daniel," she said softly, "you're tired. You have no idea how difficult Ava has been tonight.""

"Then explain the video.""

"I lost my balance.""

"Both hands pushed her?""

"She grabbed me first!""

My father looked down at the screen again.

"She was standing still.""

Chloe stepped forward, her silver dress rustling as she moved.

"That's not the whole story. Ava was being disrespectful. She was demanding things, making accusations, acting like she owned the place.""

"Did she push herself onto the ground?"" Daniel asked.

Chloe's mouth snapped shut.

He turned toward her.

"Did you see Victoria push her?""

Chloe looked at her mother.

Victoria gave her a tiny shake of the head.

It was barely noticeable.

But I saw it.

Chloe swallowed.

"I didn't see everything.""

"You were standing three feet away.""

"I was looking at my phone!""

"You were recording Ava afterward.""

Chloe's cheeks reddened.

"Why are you attacking me? I'm your daughter too!""

The words struck harder than she probably intended.

My father stood perfectly still.

Then he said, "I have never treated you as anything less.""

Chloe looked away.

I could hear my own breathing. My palms burned, and my knees trembled beneath the torn dress. I wanted to leave, to find somewhere quiet where nobody could stare at me.

But something held me in place.

For once, my father was looking at the evidence instead of asking me to forgive everyone.

Victoria noticed it too.

She reached for his arm.

"Daniel, sweetheart, think about what you're doing. We have investors inside. The press is here. You cannot turn one unfortunate misunderstanding into a public spectacle.""

He moved his arm away.

"You seem more worried about the guests than Ava's hands.""

"Of course I care about her!""

"Then why didn't you help her up?""

Victoria blinked.

My father pointed toward the paused footage.

"After you pushed her, you stood there. Chloe laughed. Neither of you helped her.""

Victoria's eyes filled again, but this time the tears seemed to come too slowly.

"I was shocked.""

"By what? The consequences?""

A murmur passed through the guests.

Victoria's face hardened for half a second before she forced it back into a wounded expression.

"You know how much I've sacrificed for this family.""

My father said nothing.

"I raised Ava when you were traveling. I managed this household. I protected your reputation. And now you're humiliating me because a nineteen-year-old refuses to accept boundaries.""

I felt my chest tighten.

There it was again.

The old weapon.

Everything Victoria had supposedly done for us was a debt she expected us to repay with silence.

I took a shaky breath.

"You didn't raise me," I said.

"You made sure I knew I wasn't welcome.""

Her gaze snapped toward me.

"Be careful, Ava.""

"Or what?""

For a moment, the polished hotel entrance seemed to hold its breath.

Victoria stepped close enough that I could smell her perfume.

"You have no idea what you're risking.""

My father immediately moved between us again.

"That's enough.""

He returned his attention to the video.

"I want the full recording. Every camera angle. Every minute before and after this incident.""

A hotel security supervisor appeared at the doorway, carrying a tablet.

"Mr. Bennett," he said cautiously, "we've sent the relevant footage to your phone. There's something else you should see.""

Victoria went completely still.

My father turned.

"What else?""

The supervisor glanced at Victoria, then at Chloe.

"Another camera captured activity inside the entrance shortly before the incident.""

"Send it to me," Daniel said.

The supervisor nodded.

My father's phone vibrated.

A new video appeared.

He opened it.

The image showed the gold doors from inside the hotel. Victoria stood near a decorative arrangement of white flowers, speaking to a man whose face was partly obscured by the angle.

She held a thick folder against her side.

Then she looked over her shoulder, checked that nobody was watching, and passed the folder to him.

The man opened it just enough to inspect the papers inside.

Victoria leaned close and said something the camera couldn't record.

Then she placed one finger against the top page, as if emphasizing a particular line.

My father zoomed in.

His expression changed.

"What is that?"" I whispered.

He didn't answer.

The image sharpened as he enlarged the frame.

Black lettering became visible across the first page.

*DANIEL BENNETT — NEW WILL*

Victoria's face drained of color.

Chloe took a step backward.

And my father, who had spent years trusting the woman beside him, slowly lifted his eyes from the screen.

"Victoria," he said, "why are you handing a stranger my will?""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then the video advanced by one frame.

A second paper slipped halfway out of the folder.

My name was printed across the top.

I stared at it, unable to understand why a document connected to my father's will would bear my name at all.

"Dad..."" My voice barely carried across the pavement.

"Why is my name on that too?""

He turned toward Victoria.

May you like

She stood beneath the brilliant hotel lights, her carefully constructed expression finally breaking.

And the security footage remained paused between us, showing the edge of a secret none of us had been meant to see.
