The Name on the Second Paper / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3: The Paper Nobody Was Supposed to See

For several seconds, my father didn't move.

His phone remained raised between us, the paused footage displaying the folder, the new will, and the second paper bearing my name.

I could hear a car engine idling near the valet stand.

Somewhere behind the hotel doors, a waiter dropped a tray. The metallic clatter echoed through the entrance, but nobody turned toward the sound.

Everyone was watching Victoria.

"Answer me," Daniel said.

Victoria looked at the guests first.

That was the detail I noticed.

Not the trembling fingers she pressed against her chest. Not the way she swallowed before speaking. She looked at the people watching her, measuring the damage, searching for a way to turn this into another story in which she was the victim.

Then she faced my father.

"I can explain.""

"Good. Start with the man.""

"He was handling a business matter.""

"What business matter requires you to hand someone my will behind a closed hotel door?""

Victoria glanced at the security supervisor.

"This is an invasion of privacy.""

The supervisor stiffened.

"Mr. Bennett requested the footage from his own hotel's security system, ma'am.""

"Then he should watch it privately.""

My father lowered the phone slightly.

"Why? What are you afraid everyone will see?""

"I'm not afraid of anything.""

"Then explain the folder.""

Victoria's mouth tightened.

"I was helping you.""

"By giving away a document you haven't told me about?""

She reached for his hand.

"Daniel, you know how complicated your estate planning has become. You've been working with lawyers for months. I was trying to make things easier.""

"Which lawyer?""

She hesitated.

It was a small pause.

But my father caught it.

"Which lawyer, Victoria?""

"One of the attorneys who handles the family's affairs.""

"Name him.""

Victoria glanced at Chloe.

My stepsister immediately stepped forward.

"Dad, this is ridiculous. Mom doesn't have to answer questions like she's on trial.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Then she shouldn't have to lie to answer them.""

Chloe's face tightened.

"You're embarrassing her in front of strangers.""

My father looked around at the guests.

"She pushed my daughter to the ground in front of these same strangers. Somehow, that didn't bother either of you.""

Chloe's cheeks flushed a deep brown beneath the bright lights.

She looked at me as though I had personally arranged every second of this disaster.

"This is your fault," she whispered.

I stared back at her.

"You watched her push me.""

"You were provoking her.""

"I was asking why she told the doorman I wasn't invited.""

"Because you always have to make everything about yourself!""

The words came out so loudly that a couple near the entrance stepped farther away.

My father turned sharply.

"Chloe.""

She stopped.

For the first time, she seemed to realize that he wasn't going to rescue her from the consequences of what she'd said.

Victoria seized the opportunity to change direction.

"Daniel, please. Let's go inside. We can discuss this in your office, away from everyone.""

"No.""

Her eyes widened.

"No?""

"You heard me.""

"We cannot have this conversation on the pavement.""

"Apparently, we can have my daughter bleeding on it.""

Victoria looked toward my hands.

I curled my fingers instinctively. The scrapes stung beneath the cool evening air, and tiny flecks of blood had dried across my palms.

My father noticed.

He took a clean handkerchief from his pocket and gently wrapped it around my right hand.

"Does it hurt badly?""

"A little.""

"Your knees?""

"They hurt too.""

His expression softened.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart.""

The apology almost undid me.

Not because it fixed anything, but because I had waited so long to hear him acknowledge that something had happened to me without immediately explaining why Victoria might have meant well.

I blinked away fresh tears.

"Why didn't you believe me before?"" I asked.

His hand stopped moving.

"What do you mean?""

"Every time I told you she was cruel to me, you said she was under stress. Every time Chloe took something that belonged to Mom, you said I should share. Every time Victoria said I was difficult, you told me to be patient.""

He stared at me.

"I thought I was keeping the peace.""

"You were keeping me quiet.""

The words hung between us.

My father looked as though I'd struck him.

Victoria stepped in quickly.

"That's unfair. I've done everything possible to make Ava feel included.""

I turned toward her.

"Then why did you tell me my mother's money was gone?""

Her expression flickered.

My father slowly straightened.

"What money?""

I looked at him.

The question frightened me more than Victoria's shove.

"Mom's inheritance," I said.

"The account she left for me. You told me it was gone.""

Daniel's face became unreadable.

"I never told you that.""

I felt the blood drain from my cheeks.

"Victoria said you used it to cover the company debts after Mom died.""

My father turned toward his wife.

"Is that what you told her?""

Victoria lifted her chin.

"Your daughter misunderstood a private conversation.""

"I understood every word," I said.

"You told me there was nothing left, and that asking about it was disrespectful to Dad.""

Daniel took one step toward Victoria.

"How much money was in that account?""

She didn't answer.

"Victoria.""

"It was years ago.""

"How much?""

Her eyes darted toward the hotel doors.

My father followed her gaze.

The security supervisor was still standing nearby, holding his tablet. He looked uncomfortable, but he didn't leave.

Daniel spoke without taking his eyes off Victoria.

"Find out who that man is. Preserve every recording from tonight. And contact my attorney.""

Victoria's voice sharpened.

"You cannot be serious.""

"I've never been more serious.""

"You would destroy our marriage over a misunderstanding?""

"I'm trying to determine whether I can trust my wife.""

She laughed once, a short, disbelieving sound.

"After everything I've done for you?""

My father looked at the phone.

"That depends on what I find in that folder.""

Victoria reached toward the device.

"Give me that.""

He pulled it away.

"Don't touch me.""

Her hand dropped.

Chloe moved closer to her mother, suddenly looking less smug than frightened.

"Mom," she whispered, "tell him.""

Victoria snapped her head toward her.

"Be quiet.""

Chloe flinched.

It was the first time that evening I'd seen her look afraid of her own mother.

My father noticed it too.

He unlocked the phone again and resumed the security video.

The image advanced.

The man holding the folder shifted his position, briefly exposing more of his face. He wore a dark suit and a silver watch. His features were clear enough to recognize, but the camera angle still didn't give my father the answer he needed.

Victoria stood beside him, speaking with animated gestures.

Then the man pulled out the second sheet.

He examined it.

Victoria pointed to a line near the bottom.

The man shook his head.

She leaned closer.

Whatever she said next made him stop arguing.

He slid the paper back into the folder.

My father paused the footage.

"Who is he?""

Victoria stared at the screen.

"I don't know.""

The security supervisor spoke before Daniel could respond.

"Ma'am, the footage shows you arriving with him earlier this evening.""

Victoria turned on him.

"You have no right to accuse me of anything.""

"I'm describing what the recording shows.""

My father enlarged the image again.

This time, the second sheet was visible long enough for the camera to capture a few lines beneath my name.

Most of the text remained blurred.

But one phrase was legible.

*BENEFICIARY AUTHORIZATION*

I read it twice.

My name.

My father's new will.

Beneficiary authorization.

The words seemed to move across the screen as my hands began to shake again.

"Dad, what does that mean?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not disbelief.

Fear.

He looked back at Victoria.

"Tell me you didn't use Ava's name to authorize anything.""

Victoria's lips parted.

Chloe gripped her mother's wrist.

"Mom?""

My father stepped closer, holding the phone between them.

"Tell me that paper has nothing to do with my daughter.""

Victoria's eyes filled with tears again, but she no longer seemed capable of making herself cry on command.

"I was trying to protect this family," she whispered.

"From what?"" Daniel demanded.

She looked at me.

For one strange moment, her expression held something beyond hatred. It looked almost like recognition, as if I had become the one person in the world who could expose something she'd spent years burying.

Then she looked back at my father.

"You don't understand what will happen if you keep digging.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Try me.""

Victoria drew a trembling breath.

"I didn't have a choice.""

My father stared at her.

"What did you do?""

She opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, the security supervisor's tablet chimed.

He looked down at the screen.

His face changed.

"Mr. Bennett," he said quietly, "the man with the folder has just been identified.""

My father turned toward him.

"Who is he?""

The supervisor hesitated, then lifted his eyes.

"He's not a stranger, sir.""

May you like

Victoria closed her eyes.

And when the supervisor finally spoke the man's name, my father went completely still.
