Chapter 3: The Name on the Screen
Nobody touched the phone.
It kept vibrating against the wooden table.
Buzz.
Buzz.
Buzz.
The sound filled the living room like a warning.
Marcus looked at me.
“Answer it.””
I couldn’t move.
“Maya.””
My father’s voice was calm, but there was no room to argue.
I picked up the phone.
My hand was shaking.
The name on the screen stared back at me.
Someone I had spent weeks trying not to think about.
Someone connected to the secret inside that pouch.
Jordan watched my face.
And he understood.
“You know them,” he said quietly.
I didn’t answer.
Nia stood up.
“Who is it?””
The phone stopped ringing.
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
Then a message appeared.
One sentence.
My stomach dropped.
Jordan stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
I locked the screen.
Too late.
He had already seen my expression.
Marcus noticed too.
“Maya.””
I looked at him.
“Dad…”
“What did they send?””
I wanted to disappear.
I wanted to go back twenty minutes.
Back before Lily mentioned the camera.
Back before Jordan looked at me like I had betrayed him.
Back before my family saw the truth.
But time doesn’t move backward.
It only reveals what people tried to bury.
“I need to explain everything.””
Marcus crossed his arms.
“Then start.””
I looked at Jordan.
“I never wanted you to get blamed.””
His jaw tightened.
“But I did.””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
I looked toward the staircase.
Toward the hallway.
Toward the place where the security camera had captured everything.
“Of Dad finding out.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“Finding out what?””
I stayed silent.
The silence answered for me.
Nia stepped forward.
“Maya, whatever this is, we can handle it.””
I almost laughed.
Because I wasn’t sure we could.
“You don’t understand.””
Marcus walked closer.
“Then help us understand.””
For a moment, I saw the father I knew.
Not the angry man.
Not the disappointed man.
The one who used to carry me when I fell asleep on the couch.
The one who promised he would always protect me.
And that made telling the truth even harder.
“Jordan didn’t steal the necklace,” I said.
Jordan looked away.
“I know that now.””
“No,” I whispered.
“You don’t know everything.””
The room became silent again.
I looked at the phone in my hand.
The unread message.
The secret.
The reason I had begged Jordan to hide the pouch.
The reason I had done the worst possible thing.
Marcus noticed my hesitation.
“Maya, what did you put him through?””
My eyes filled with tears.
“I thought I was protecting Mom.””
Everyone froze.
Mom’s face changed.
“Protecting me from what?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because saying it out loud would make it real.
Then Lily quietly spoke from behind the sofa.
“Maya…”
Everyone turned.
She was holding something.
Something she had found near the staircase.
A small piece of paper.
Her eyes moved between us.
“I think this fell out of the bag.””
My blood ran cold.
Marcus reached for it.
I stepped forward.
“Dad, wait.””
But it was too late.
He unfolded the paper.
His eyes moved across the words.
And the color slowly disappeared from his face.
May you like
Because whatever was written there wasn’t about a stolen necklace.
It was about our family.
