Chapter 8: The Visitor
The doorbell rang once.
Nobody moved.
The second ring came louder.
Lily grabbed my hand.
“Who is it?””
No one answered.
Marcus stared at the front door camera.
His face was unreadable.
Then the screen changed.
A person appeared.
Standing outside.
Waiting.
Not hiding.
Not running.
Like they wanted us to know they were there.
Jordan looked at the monitor.
“Do you know them?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
That scared me.
Because my father always had answers.
Even when things were impossible.
Even when he was afraid.
But now he looked lost.
Nia whispered:
“Don’t open the door.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You know who this is.””
It wasn’t a question.
It was a fact.
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“I never wanted this.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You never wanted what?””
She didn’t respond.
The doorbell rang again.
This time, a voice came through the speaker.
“Marcus.””
Everyone froze.
Because we knew that voice.
Not personally.
But from stories.
From old photographs.
From conversations that stopped whenever children entered the room.
Marcus walked toward the screen.
The person outside looked directly into the camera.
“Open the door.””
My father whispered:
“No.””
Jordan looked confused.
“Who is it?””
Marcus didn’t take his eyes off the screen.
“The person who started all of this.””
My stomach tightened.
The front door remained closed.
The person outside waited.
Then another message appeared on the security screen.
A file transfer.
A video.
Marcus opened it.
The footage showed an older recording.
Not from our house.
A different camera.
A different time.
But the image was clear enough.
It showed my grandfather.
Marcus’s father.
Sitting at a desk.
Talking to someone.
Someone whose face wasn’t visible.
My grandfather placed a folder on the table.
Then he said:
“If anything happens to me, this goes to Marcus.””
The hidden person replied:
“And if he finds out?””
My grandfather leaned back.
“He deserves the truth.””
The video paused.
Marcus stared.
Because he recognized the voice.
Everyone did.
The hidden person finally stepped into view.
And the entire room went silent.
Because the person standing beside my grandfather in the recording…
was the same person standing outside our front door.
Marcus slowly looked at Nia.
“How long have you known?””
My mother started crying.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“But you knew enough.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Nia looked toward me.
Then Jordan.
Then Lily.
Her voice broke.
“Because I was trying to protect this family.””
The person outside knocked.
Three slow knocks.
Like they knew exactly what was happening inside.
Marcus walked toward the door.
I grabbed his arm.
“Dad, don’t.””
He looked at me.
The anger was gone.
The disappointment was gone.
Only exhaustion remained.
“Maya.””
I shook my head.
“What if they’re here to hurt us?””
Marcus looked at the security camera.
Then at all of us.
“My whole life, I thought secrets protected families.””
He opened the lock.
“But secrets are what almost destroyed ours.””
The door handle moved.
Everyone held their breath.
The door opened.
And the person standing outside looked directly at Marcus.
Then at me.
Then at Jordan.
Their eyes stopped on the phone still showing the security footage.
And they smiled.
“You finally found the pouch.””
Nobody spoke.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The person looked past him.
Straight at Nia.
And said:
“She knows.””
Nia closed her eyes.
Because she knew exactly what they meant.
The stranger reached into their coat.
Pulled out a small envelope.
And placed it in Marcus’s hand.
“Your father wanted you to have this.””
Marcus looked down.
The handwriting on the envelope was familiar.
The same handwriting from the letter.
His father’s handwriting.
But there was something written across the front.
Something that made Marcus’s face lose all color.
Because it wasn’t a name.
May you like
It was a warning.
*Do not trust your wife.*
