Chapter 6: The Secret Nobody Wanted Found

Nobody moved after the recording ended.

The screen went black.

But the words stayed in the room.

What your father did.

My grandfather.

Marcus’s father.

A man who had been gone for years.

A man whose photographs still sat on the bookshelf beside our family pictures.

I looked at my dad.

His face had changed.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Pain.

“Marcus,” Nia whispered.

He didn’t look at her.

“What did you mean?””

She shook her head.

“I should have told you sooner.””

Jordan looked between them.

“So this whole thing wasn’t about the necklace?””

Nobody answered.

Because it wasn’t.

The necklace was just the first crack.

The first thing we noticed.

But something much bigger had been buried underneath.

Marcus placed the phone on the table.

“Everyone sits down.””

Nobody argued.

We moved slowly.

Like any sudden movement could break whatever was left of our family.

I sat beside Lily.

She reached for my hand.

I squeezed hers.

Even after everything, she still trusted me.

That hurt.

Because I wasn’t sure I deserved it.

Marcus looked at Nia.

“Tell me everything.””

My mother stared at her hands.

“I found something after your father passed away.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“There were documents.””

“What kind of documents?””

She hesitated.

“Old business records.””

Marcus looked confused.

“My father owned a company. Everyone knows that.””

“No.””

Nia looked up.

“Everyone knows the story he told.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Marcus leaned forward.

“What story?””

“That he built everything himself.””

The room went silent.

My father looked away.

Because those words meant something to him.

His entire life.

His understanding of his family.

His father.

All of it.

Nia continued.

“I found records showing he wasn’t honest about how he got his money.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

“You’re saying my father stole?””

Nia swallowed.

“I’m saying he took something that wasn’t his.””

Jordan looked at the floor.

“And the pouch?””

My mother looked at me.

“The pouch contained copies of those documents.””

My heart dropped.

I remembered opening it.

The papers.

The names.

The signatures.

I thought I understood what I was seeing.

I didn’t.

“I thought Mom was hiding proof,” I said.

Nia looked hurt.

“You thought I was protecting a crime.””

“I thought you were protecting Dad from the truth.””

She closed her eyes.

“And instead you destroyed his trust in Jordan.””

The words landed hard.

I looked at Jordan.

He didn’t look back.

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“Why hide the documents?””

Nia’s voice became softer.

“Because I was scared.””

There it was again.

That word.

Scared.

But this time, I understood.

Fear wasn’t always about protecting yourself.

Sometimes it was about protecting someone you loved from a truth that could destroy them.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” Marcus asked.

“Because your father’s name still controls everything.””

Marcus looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Nia reached into her purse.

She pulled out another envelope.

“I found this yesterday.””

Everyone stared.

Marcus didn’t take it.

“What is it?””

“A letter.””

“From who?””

Nia looked at him.

“Your father.””

The room went cold.

“My father has been dead for eight years.””

“I know.””

“Then how could he write me a letter?””

Nia’s fingers tightened around the envelope.

“Because he wrote it before he died.””

Marcus slowly reached for it.

But before he opened it, my phone buzzed.

Again.

Everyone looked.

Another message.

This time from an unknown number.

I knew immediately.

Because the message included a photo.

A photo of me.

Holding the pouch.

Standing with Jordan.

Taken from the same hallway camera.

Underneath it were six words:

*You should have left it alone.*

My blood turned cold.

Someone else had been watching.

May you like

Someone else knew.

And they were not afraid of being discovered.
