Chapter 4: The Letter That Could Destroy My Brother

For several seconds, I couldn't bring myself to break the seal.

Elena's handwriting had always been distinctive. The capital M in my name leaned slightly to the right, and she used to draw a tiny crescent moon beneath her signature whenever she left me a note.

This envelope had no moon.

Only a warning.

Open only if Daniel tries to take Nia away.

My daughter stood beside me, clutching the sleeves of her hoodie. Mason hovered near the staircase, his phone still displaying the forged guardianship petition. Chloe sat on the bottom step, watching her mother with the frightened attention of a child waiting for the next explosion.

Vanessa was the only person who seemed to understand what the envelope might contain.

“Marcus, don't open that,” she said.

I raised my eyes.

“Why?””

“Because Elena was sick when she wrote it. She wasn't thinking clearly.””

“Then you won't mind if I read it.””

Vanessa took a step forward.

“I'm asking you as your wife.””

“And I'm asking you as the father of the little girl you've been trying to send away.””

Her lips parted, but nothing came out.

I slid my finger beneath the flap.

Inside were three handwritten pages, a photograph, and a small brass key.

The photograph showed Daniel standing beside a black sedan in the parking lot of a storage facility. He was holding a thick brown envelope. Elena stood several feet away, her expression tense.

On the back, she'd written a date.

The day before her accident.

I unfolded the first page.

Marcus, if you're reading this, Daniel has finally made his move. I wanted to tell you everything sooner, but I needed proof. I was afraid he would destroy it before I could protect Nia.

My hands began to shake.

Your brother has been taking money from the family trust. He believes he can replace it before anyone notices, but the losses are larger than he admits. When I confronted him, he told me I was ruining his life.

I glanced at the transfer receipt on the counter.

The missing money wasn't an isolated incident.

It was the beginning of something much larger.

I continued reading.

Daniel has also been speaking to Vanessa. At first, I thought he was trying to persuade her to help him hide the transactions. Then I discovered they were discussing guardianship arrangements for Nia.

Vanessa lowered herself into a chair.

“I never wanted to hurt her,” she whispered.

I kept reading.

If Daniel can convince you that Nia is unstable, or that she needs to live somewhere else, he may be able to gain access to the trust through a court-appointed guardian. He told me he could control the money once he controlled who made decisions for her.

I stopped.

A thirteen-year-old girl.

My daughter's inheritance.

My brother had looked at both and seen an opportunity.

The second page was shorter.

I found evidence that Daniel used my signature on documents I never approved. I also found a record of a payment connected to a company called Northbridge Holdings. He insists it's a legitimate investment. I believe it's a way to hide the money.

At the bottom, Elena had underlined a sentence twice.

Do not trust any document Daniel presents without independent verification.

I looked at Mason's phone again.

The forged petition suddenly made terrible sense.

“Where did you find this envelope?”” I asked Nia.

“In Mom's music box.””

“Why didn't you give it to me sooner?””

Her eyes dropped.

“I was afraid Vanessa would find it.””

Vanessa stood abruptly.

“That is enough. Marcus, you're allowing a dead woman's paranoid suspicions to destroy our marriage.””

I folded the letter.

“You knew about the trust withdrawals.””

“I knew Daniel had financial problems. I didn't know he was stealing.””

“You knew he wanted Nia removed from this house.””

“He said she would be happier with relatives!””

“Which relatives?””

Vanessa hesitated.

I felt the answer before she spoke.

“Daniel.””

Mason's face changed.

“You told me Uncle Daniel was going to take Nia to live with him for a while.””

Vanessa turned toward her son.

“Mason, this is an adult matter.””

“You told me Dad had agreed.””

“I thought he would.””

“You told me to help you find Nia's school records.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

I stepped closer.

“What school records?””

Mason looked at me.

“Mom asked me to photograph Nia's report cards and medical forms. She said Uncle Daniel needed them for the guardianship application.””

Nia stared at him.

“You knew?””

Mason flinched.

“I didn't know what they were doing. I swear.””

“You helped them.””

“I thought your dad had agreed!””

Nia turned away, tears gathering in her eyes.

I understood the hurt in her face. It wasn't simply that Mason had helped. It was that she had spent months feeling alone in a house full of people who knew more than they admitted.

I crouched beside her.

“Look at me, sweetheart.””

She shook her head.

“Nia.””

Finally, she met my eyes.

“You don't have to trust everyone in this house right now. But you can trust me to protect you.””

Her lower lip trembled.

“Even if Uncle Daniel says I'm bad?””

“Especially then.””

She threw her arms around my neck.

I held her tightly, breathing in the familiar scent of her shampoo. For a moment, I was back in the hospital after Elena's death, promising my daughter that I would always be there.

I'd meant every word.

Somehow, I'd still let her feel abandoned.

When Nia pulled away, I turned to Mason.

“Do you still have the original documents?””

He shook his head.

“Mom keeps them in her desk. I only took pictures.””

Vanessa moved toward the staircase.

“I'm done with this conversation.””

“No,” I said.

“You're going to tell me where the documents are.””

She stopped.

“You can't interrogate me in my own home.””

“Then we'll let the police ask you.””

That silenced her.

I took out my phone and called Rebecca.

When she answered, I explained the letter, the forged petition, and the guardianship scheme. She listened without interrupting.

Finally, she said, “Do not alter or remove any suspected evidence. Save the photographs in their original form, preserve the devices, and bring everything to me. I'll arrange an urgent review of the trust and advise you about the appropriate report to make.””

“Can we freeze the account?””

“We can contact the trustee and request an immediate restriction on suspicious transactions. If the bank confirms unauthorized activity, we can take the next steps from there.””

“And the guardianship petition?””

“If your signature was forged, we need to establish that before anyone attempts to use it. I'll check the court records and verify whether anything has been filed.””

After the call, I took photographs of Elena's letter and placed the originals back in the envelope.

Then I noticed the brass key.

A number had been stamped into its handle.

*214.*

Beneath it was a faded label from a storage company.

I turned the photograph over again.

The same number appeared on the corner of the brown envelope in Daniel's hand.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What's in storage unit 214?””

She stared at the key.

“I don't know.””

“You were with Daniel the night Elena died. You admitted he took a folder from her car. Now I have a key connected to a storage facility, and my wife's letter warns me about him.””

“I don't know what's in that unit!””

For once, her fear seemed genuine.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Rebecca appeared.

Marcus, I checked the court records. No guardianship petition appears under your name at this time. However, the trust administrator has flagged two additional attempted transfers. I'm investigating.

Before I could respond, another message arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Nia leaving school.

The picture had been taken from across the street.

Underneath it were eight words.

*Stop looking into the accident, or she'll disappear.*

My blood ran cold.

I turned the phone toward Nia.

She covered her mouth.

Vanessa stared at the image, then whispered, “Daniel said he would never involve the children.””

I looked at her.

“You knew he was capable of this.””

She shook her head desperately.

“I knew he was desperate. I didn't know he would threaten her.””

I put the phone away and wrapped an arm around my daughter.

The decision was already made.

Tomorrow, I would take the key to storage unit 214.

And whatever waited behind that door, I would finally discover what my brother had been so determined to hide.

But as I looked at the photograph again, I noticed something I hadn't seen before.

The picture of Nia had been taken that afternoon.

And the person standing beside the photographer's car was wearing my brother's distinctive silver watch.

Daniel wasn't merely watching our family.

He was watching my daughter.
